POLAR EXPRESS, GANAR, IMPULSE, and MARIAH
win their fleets in the CAPE HENRY CUP: The burning
question up until early Saturday morning, after two days of building
seas, northeast winds, extreme tides with accompanying monster currents, and
generally unpleasant weather, to BBSA race chairman Scott
Almond was, "Will we be inside or outside?" Scott
made the call to take the race outside the harbor area and the fleets ran the
long courses with PHRF A and B going beyond the Chesapeake Bay
Bridge-Tunnel Complex (27.4 nm) while PHRF C, Non-Spin, and Cruising did the
18.5nm course to Back River entrance. RESULTS: PHRF A (7
boats competing): 1. Polar Express (J105), Pan
Burdett; 2.Namesake (Olson 30), Craig Olsen;
3. Feather (J36), Phil Briggs. PHRF B (3
boats competing): 1.Ganar! (Santana 35), Dave
Bouchard. PHRF C (4 boats competing): 1.Callinectes
(Cal 30), Ben Cuker; 2.Bowmovement (Catalina 27),
Martin Casey. PHRF Non-Spin (11 boats
competing): 1.Impulse (Catalina 34), Tom
Peddy; 2.Black Widow (Irwin 38), Leo Wardrup;
3.Turbo's Tub (Morgan 35), MD Riley. Cruising
(2 boats competing): 1.Mariah, (Cal 39); Doug
Rose. Polar Express, Pam Burdett,
awarded the Cape Henry Cup. PRO: Scott
Almond
Mirage (Christian Schaumloffel's
Hobie 33) lost her rudder Saturday in the Cape Henry Cup while sailing at speeds
up to 17 knots. The crew rigged their spinnaker pole over the stern as a
makeshift rudder, and sailed the remaining 12 miles home. When they pulled
the boat, all that was left to see, where a rudder used to be, was 4 inches of
the stainless steel rudder shaft. As Christian said, "Now the race
starts to get a replacement ..." ready for Southern Bay Race
Week (June 3,4,5).

Weekend before this past 10 505 skippers
and crew gathered at the HYC Annual One-Design Trapeze
Regatta. The top two boats in the two day regatta were way ahead of
the other 8. The Falsone/Martin team finished 2nd (19
points) to the winners, Sparkman/Moore (17 points). In
the tradition of the class, the crews name is listed first and the skipper
second in 505 results. In the same regatta, but sailing on Saturday only,
Charles McCoy in Calamity Jane topped two other Hampton One
Design (HOD) participants.

MURPHY'S LAW: That match racing
looked like a lot of fun to me. Picture this - matched racing beagles,
"bones in their teeth", "fur flying", and "full and by"! A work of art
suitable for framing.
/S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in
us all.
