Portsmouth Boat Club hosted their annual Merrimac
Memorial Day Regatta Saturday, and welcomed 42 boats to the
growing affair (13 last year). Saturday's gloomy weather and T-boomer
predictions limited the racing to morning competition, but lunch on the grounds
of PBC under 7 tents made up for the shortened time on the course. Event
chairman, Jack Herbert, said competitors included southern Bay homies and
out of staters (NJ,SC,NC,MD, and PA) as well as one from out of the country
(Denmark). RESULTS: Monohull (open) (12 boats):
1.Cary Bonenberger, El Toro; 2.Steve Spratt,
Capri 14.2; 3.Jack Clayton, Mixer. Moth (8
boats): 1.Mark Saunders, 2.Susan Bousquet;

Whitner; 2.Jerry Thompson; 3.Don
Beck. Force 5 (5 boats): 1.Byron
Hicks; 2.Mike Austin; 3.Cliff
Bateman. Laser (6 boats): 1.Richardo de la
Puente; 2.Cameron Barclift; 3.Trent Robert

Shook (Shark).
Dock rumors have been rampant about the whereabouts
of Sanford Richardson's big red boat,
Kahuna. Here's the "real deal" straight from the owner
himself. Kahuna is on the hard in Wilmington, North
Carolina, having repairs made to damage that occurred while she was in
Florida in January. Since she is up, Sanford plans to have a new red paint
job done, including candyappling her with 3 or 4 clear coats. If all goes
well, she should be back home around the end of July.
Small boat One Design Notables in the
area: At the recent Trapeze Regatta (hosted by HYC), event
chairman, Tyler Moore, brought in California Olympic Coach and
sailmaker "Jay Gaser" and former ODU standout Mike
Martin, also from California, to share go-fast info and advice
with the regatta participants.
AKKKK! Yes, CALLINECTES, you did
win PHRF C in the Cape Henry Cup race. Hope the error
did not make you too crabby. "Sorry for the partial oversight"
in issue #250 from SBRNYCU to skipper Ben Cuker and crew.
(issue #250 - Callinectes was shown correctly in fleet results,
but inadvertently left off intro line).
Media Watch: Every racing sailor in the
southern Bay will want to give a big thumbs up to Daily
Press sports writer Darryl Slater for his article
on racing in the Sunday, May 29, Sports Section. Racers are saying it is
the best, without exception, racing piece written in any daily in our
area in recent memory. Michael Sean Walsh did the
illustrations for the center fold and photographer Joe Fudge
took the picture on page 1 of the sports section. Joe got
the shot at last fall's J29 National Championships that were hosted in
Hampton.
When Norfolk Navy Sailing Center junior sailing guru,
Henly Ervin, packed up a number of her juniors for the
Merrimac Memorial Regatta, she had no idea she would need a truck to
bring home their trophies. The Navy kids swept the Laser class.
Good job!

2005. Race organizers say questions and entry forms and

To Fiddlers Green: Earlier this month,
the Chesapeake Bay racing community lost a bright, tireless, and devoted
supporter. Ham Palmer, 90, passed on May 5th. Ham
was a certified Judge and Race Management Official, past president of CBYRA, and
sailed and raced a number of boats of all sizes among many, many other efforts
he undertook during his 50-some years of service to the racing scene on the
Bay. As a young man, Mr. Palmer lived and worked on the Peninsula at the
Newport News Shipyard. At the time of his passing, he made his home in
Annapolis.
The schooner Virginia will
make her public debut at Norfolk's Harbor Fest (June 10-11-12). Be sure to
check this beauty out.
MURPHY'S LAW: SBRW! 6 great
races - 3 great parties. And, all in 3 days. Now, that's a good
ratio! /S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing
spirit in us all.
