Virginia H, Andy Armstrong's  Soverel 30, Earns Spot in National Hospice Alliance Championship Regatta.  Light air plagued another Hampton Roads regatta yesterday, but 14 of the 18 racing toughed it out and escaped the dreaded DNF (did not finish) designation on the score sheet for the eleventh annual [Greater Hampton Roads] Hospice Regatta.  Andy and his crew are eligible to represent the Hampton Roads area in this coming spring's NHA championship regatta by virtue of having the fastest corrected time over the course.  RESULTS:  PHRF A (5 boats) 1.Christian Schaumloffel, Mirage, Hobie 33; 2.Chuck Monsees, Rockette, J/29; 3.Phil Briggs, Feather, J/36.  PHRF B (3 boats) 1.Frank Silver, Phantom, B/25; PHRF C (6 boats) 1.Louie Lewis, Incentive, O'Day 27; 2.Ben Cuker, Callinectes, Cal 30-3; 3.Brenden Drinkwater; Roswell, Kirby 25.  PHRF Non-Spin (4 boats - 1 finisher) 1.Andy Armstrong, Virginia H, Soverel 30.  PRO: Glenn Giles; Official Scorer: Dick Boykin

The Formula 18 North American Championships are being sailed this week off Buckroe Beach.  Racing begins today and concludes Friday.  These are serious catamaran racers on Hobie Tigers and Nacra 18s.  One clever devil has painted the starboard side of each hull white and the port side of each hull yellow ... to avoid being too noticeable on the starting line.  Probably to drive his competitors a little bit crazy too.

There is a knack to light air sailing.  Some skippers believe in the time honored practice of "stacking the crew over the keel" to lower the boat's center of gravity and minimize pitch.  Legend has it that one such skipper actually gave his crew felt tip pens before sending them below and invited them to write graffiti on the interior of the hull.

The Space Shuttle Discovery return has been delayed until tomorrow.  Yuck.  Another day with all that dirty laundry from the space station.  Lucky for them it's not damp foulies !

If you are going to do the Admiral's Cup Regatta, this coming Saturday, administered by York River Yacht Club and Seaford Yacht Club, organizers would like for you to submit you entry prior to August 10th (Wednesday).  The actual entry deadline, however, is race day at  1100 hours at the Seaford Yacht Club dock. This is a CBYRA sanctioned regatta.  For info contact Steve Bowen at (804) 642-4746 or Chuck Eldred at (757) 898-1025.

Tyler Moore is the newly crowned 5o5 North American Champion.  Tyler picked up his new head gear in Kingston, Ontario, this past weekend.  Tyler's crew was Jeff Nelson.  Other southern Bay homies sailing in the 37 boat regatta were Henry and Doug Amthor (10th) and Chris Behm (14th).

2005 Tom Brady Masters Race is this Saturday.  This is the one where everyone on the boat must be at last 55 years old and the boat itself has to be at least 10.  No spinnakers and no double headsails.  This is not a sanctioned event, but the race and the post-race activities usually do qualify as a legitimate HOOT!  The skippers meeting is at noon at HYC on race day - entries are due at 1100 on race day.  For info contact Malcolm or Kathy Brady at 723-3244.

MURPHY'S LAW:  You know it is hot when crew is more interested in the bottled water supply than the beer count.  /S/  Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
