Quiz: Is it necessary for the Race Committee to notify
the boats of a shortened course as they round the mark
beginning what will be the final leg? (Answer is at end of this
issue.)
2005 Mobjack National Champions are Trey Smith and
crew Jordan Wintringham, both of Virginia Beach. This is the 4th
National Championship title for Trey and the third with Jordan as crew;
their string of finishes was 3-4-1 [6] 4-1-4. The pair beat the 2nd place
finishers, Joe and Tracy Kubinec, by 3 points and
defending champions, Jim Rice and Pete Wallio by 8
points. Fifteen Mobjack teams raced in the 46th National Championship
Regatta. The event was hosted by Ware River Yacht Club, located in the Ware
River just off Mobjack Bay. PRO: Rick Klein
Talk about tough... 9 hearty crews toughed out the
Chesapeake Bay summer dragons of light air and swift currents to
finish the annual Plantation Light Race this past weekend.
Kahuna (Sanford Richardson) won the Hispaniola Trophy for best
corrected time in A and B fleet and Callinectes (Ben
Cuker) won the Nelms Trophy, best corrected time for a C fleet
boat. Kahuna was first to reach the finish line at 3:39 AM
Saturday morning and the last boat to finish, Dana Dillon's
Amarylyn, skippered by Jeff Rogers in Dana's absence,
finished at 1:30 PM Saturday afternoon. Twenty-two boats actually started
the Plantation Light Race at 7:00 PM Friday night. The 46.4 nm course
began in Hampton Roads Harbor, ran to Back River Bell, then on to York Spit
Light, then across to Plantation Light off the town of Cape Charles on the
Eastern Shore, and back to the entrance to the HR harbor off Old Point
Comfort. All fleets ran the same course. RESULTS: PHRF A (4
of 5 starters finished) 1.Sanford Richardson,
Kahuna; 2.Christian Schaumloffel, Mirage;
3.Craig Olsen, Namesake. PHRF B (1 of 2
starters finished) 1.Dan Smoker, Smoke.
PHRF C (2 of 7 starters finished) 1.Ben Cuker,
Callinectes; 2.Dillon/Rogers, Amarylyn.

Mark Wheeler and Anna Cobb team up to win 2005 Hampton
One Design National Championship. Sailing 6 races in three days,
and, therefore having a throw out to kick, the HOD team of Mark
Wheeler and Anna Cobb put together a string of
2-1-5-1-1 [7] to finish 2 points ahead of second place finishers Eddie
and Gordon Wolcott, 1-2-4-3-2 [12]. Latane and Patricia
Montague came in third, 3-3-3-2-3 [6], in the 14 boat field.
Hampton Yacht Club, birthplace of the Hampton One-Design racer,
hosted the 2005 Nationals. Race Committee Chairmen: Malcolm and
Kathy Brady.
Old Dominion University's Anna Tunnicliffe
finished 2nd in the Laser Radial class at the 2005 Summer World University
Games in Izmir, Turkey. Anna was pleased with her silver medal and
characterized her performance in the regatta as "... a good step forward going
toward the Olympics." The 2008 Olympics will be in Beijing.
Boat [Show] Note: Most southern
Bay racers have commented on the classic beauty of Bill Peach's
Surprise, the lovely Alerion Express 28 he has raced since he
"downsized" from his full sized, large crew (12), Labrot winner
Revenge. Now comes Alerion's 38 footer, the Alerion Quest, that
the builder professes has even more advantages for the single-handed or
short-handed racing skipper and day sailor. (NOTE: This is
not an advertisement - just a note pertinent to racers and skippers who
lament the availability of crew these days.)

Racing Rules Quiz Answer:
No. RRS 32.2 says that the Race Committee need only anchor at any
rounding mark (or gate), display the shorten course flag (Code Flag S), and make
two sound signals as the first boat approaches.
MURPHY'S LAW: A special
bow-WOW to all of those who began the 46 mile trek to
Plantation Light Friday night and, as tenacious as bulldogs, hung in there and
finished the race Saturday. They overcame drifty-itis, heat stroke,
and inclinations toward "good sense". On the other side of the coin, the
jury is still out as to their likely positive contribution to the general
population's gene pool. No matter - they are one determined
bunch. /S/
