Roads: Norfolk Yacht & Country Club is hosting the Annual

Harbor. First warning signal is set for 1100 hours. There are starts
for all PHRF classes as well as a Cruising class. There will be a post

and awards. For info go to www.cbyra.org or call the CBYRA office
at (410) 269-1194
For the rest of today, and beyond, most of us will be focused
on New Orleans, the Mississippi / Alabama Gulf Coast, and the Florida
Panhandle. Chesapeake Bay sailors all remember Isabel (2003), and
Hurricane Katrina is Isabel's REALLY BIG sister. Thoughts and prayers
to our Gulf area brethren.
Racing Rules Quiz: Is it necessary for
the Race Committee to notify the boats of a changed course as they round
the mark beginning the changed leg?
Yes, Virginia, there is wind on the Chesapeake Bay
! Plenty of racers took advantage of the opportunity to just
go sailing yesterday. And, a number of racers got in a team building,
practice day too! Fall is like a whole new season. Dates on your
calendar are closer than they appear!
J/24 - Fleet 71 Summer Races:
What it was was... W-I-N-D ! And, it blew 10-12 out of the ESE
steady as a rock once it settled in. The Hampton Roads J/24s in Fleet 71
got in 5 great races yesterday afternoon. No drifting, no sail flopping,
no problem. When all was said and done, Alan Bomar's
Roundabout won the tie breaker (3-1-4-1-1) over Matt
Haskell/Dave Taylor's @#$%&! (1-2-3-2-2).
Mike Veraldi and his crew finished third (4-3-1-4-3), when
Chris Duer in Cavitation took an RAF (retired
after finishing) in the last race (2-4-2-3-6). New on the J/24 scene, the
Doreen crew and skipper Jack Herbert sailed over from Portsmouth and flew
their spinnaker for the first time in Sunday's races. PRO: John McCarthy,
Official Scorer: Dick Boykin; Mark Boat: Larry Bryant.
Tattoos in Norfolk (maybe): Tattoos
have been the trademark of sailors and seaman for centuries. Strange as it may
seem, the city being the capitol of Navy sailors, the most tattooed segment of
the population (before the NBA took it up), tattoo places are illegal in
Norfolk. That will probably change soon, the popularity of "body art"
being what it is today.
Southern Bay J29s at the North Americans, Sackets Harbor, New
York: Case Whittemore's Patriot
finished 4th at the 2005 J29 North Americans weekend before last and Bob
Wardwell's Killshot was 6th. John and Linda Edwards'
(Solomons, MD) Rhumb Punch took second to the class champion
Hustler (John Esposito).
There is talk that the new Bay Creek Marina at Cape Charles on
Virginia's Eastern Shore is considering a full fledged weekend regatta for
2006. As of now, the idea is a one-day (Saturday) mid-distance race with
parties and regatta festivities before and after.
Henry Amthor (HYC), John Hubbard (FBYC)
and William Murphy (FBYC) are southern Bay homies already
entered in the Chesapeake Bay Laser Masters Championships, set to begin
September 10 at Fishing Bay Yacht Club. Check out www.fbyc.net for complete info.
40 Already! There are already more than 40 boats
(including crews, skippers, and racing groupies) signed up and bound for
Fishing Bay for the annual Stingray Point Regatta. Go to
www.fbyc.net for info. And, there are
already 40 boats entered in the Turkey Shoot Hospice Regatta
(Sept 30 - Oct 2). Go to www.yankeepointmarina.com)

Racing Rules Quiz Answer:
Absolutely. RRS 33 requires the RC to fly Flag
"C" and indicate the new bearing at the rounding mark that begins the
changed leg. Bonus info: The new mark need not yet be in position
when the boats start the changed leg. But, RCs, for the sake of your own
blood pressure, it ought to be close.
MURPHY'S
LAW: Tattoos. I, The Murphster, am a proponent of
tattoo-ing. I do believe, however, that each tattoo should be
useful. For example, a newbie crewbie could tattoo a sail trim guide
or a set of racing signals in a visible spot for ready reference. A
racing skipper and crewmates would surely be
impressed. /S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing
spirit in us all.
