onTURKEY SHOOT OVERALL WINNER IS....LEE
WILLIAMS, POE BIRD, a Raven 24. Lee is the first
skipper to win the Turkey Shoot three times. Lee, along with his crew,
will compete in the National Hospice Alliance Championship Regatta in Annapolis
this coming Spring. Two glorious autumn days of racing on the southern
Chesapeake Bay. Eighty - five classy classic boats and wooden boats and
unusual boats filled the Rappahannock River between the Corrotoman and Carter's
Creek. And, the 2005 regatta raised more than $30,000 for northern neck
hospice services on both sides of the River.
Turkey Shoot Sightings: Rob Powell,
formerly manager of the Norfolk Boat Works, was there. All is
well - he is managing a yard in the Rappahannock area, his kidhood stomping
grounds. Four junior sailors from Indian Creek
Country Club won their fleet and took 3rd overall in
Jaqueline, a Borg Borrenson. Matt Guthrie, in
his first year at Virginia Tech, skippered the ICCC
effort. Phil and Arabella Denvir entered one of
their match racing program J/24's in the regatta. They will
be expanding their sailing school operation to Virginia Beach next
season. Frank Miller, who won the Cruising Fleet at
Southern Bay Race Week this past June, was sailing out of his new
home in Irvington on his Ericson 38,
Windblown. Buddy, a 4-pawed racing
cohort of Murphy The Racing Beagle, was
"pitman" or "pitdog" on
Yonder. Desparado, a Hinckley Owens Cutter 41
owned and skippered by Ric Bauer (Aylett, Virginia), was
selected prettiest boat. Desparado won the hearts of the more
than 100 spectators on the official spectator boat, The Tides Inn's 124 foot
Miss Ann.

question for those single-handed racers: What do
they do when there is no crew to bark at? And, a follow-on
question: Can you pick a bone with yourself at your post-race
eval session? /S/ Murphy the Racing
Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
