IMPORTANT REGION IV (Southern Bay) PHRF MEETING -
Wednesday, October 26, 2005, 6 - 8 PM, Hampton Library (main Branch), 4207
Victoria Blvd. This is where members of PHRF in the
southern Bay have a chance at input on fleet splits for 2006, policy
changes, etc. and let delegates know opinions and comments. This is
not where individual ratings are discussed; that is strictly for the
handicappers. The Region IV input goes forward to the 2005 Annual Meeting
of PHRF Delegates from all over the Bay (Annapolis, November 19, 2005).
For info contact: John Blais, VP PHRF Region IV, (cell phone)

CCV FALL SERIES CHAMPIONS: SEA STAR,
COOL CHANGE, ROUNDABOUT, and VIRGINIA H
Two races Sunday, after the deluge on Saturday and before winter
descended this morning, wrapped up the CCV Fall Series and brought to a close
the CCV season long (11 races) battle for the coveted CCV High Point
Championship trophies. The fleet enjoyed northerly breezes throughout the
4 hours of racing in light rain and fog in Hampton Roads
harbor. Non-Spinnaker fleet champ, Andy Armstrong, turned in another
perfect performance in his Soverel 30, Virginia H, to capture the title
with 4 wins. FALL SERIES RESULTS: PHRF A:

SBRNYCU Rules Quiz: You are
fouled badly by another boat. There is no
contact, but the foul allows several boats to pass and beat you. Are you
eligible for redress?
The Schooners are coming! Larry Bryant,
Co-Chairman of the 2005 Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner
Race, says he expects "the first boat to finish
around noon on Friday, October 14th, and... [he expects] it to be
Virginia!" There are 31 schooners racing from Baltimore to
Portsmouth. The start of the race is set for 1330 on Thursday,
October 13. For details see the special race supplement in the October
issue of SpinSheet Magazine. Cross your fingers, toes, and eyes
for our Virginia !
Annapolis Sailboat Show: Random
sightings: Doug Rose, our Mr. Volvo, twice within 10 feet of
the entrance of Chic and Ruth's. Raleigh Hamilton, a long
time regular in the Willoughby Racers' Thursday Night Series. Ken
Saylor, in the vicinity of the North Sails tent sporting the shirt of
the day. Randy Pugh checking out the gear tents.
Kirt and Gayle Schuldt chowing down at the Fleet Reserve lunch
spot. Marty Steffens, currently boatless, and others were
hanging about the Colgate 26 display at the show. Dan Smoker,
Sanford Richardson and others viewing most of Saturday's show
from a dry place, i.e. inside. Greg Cutter is there today
(Monday), breakdown day. The Racing Beagle, Murphy's friend, golden
retriever Ginger, lounging on the doorstep of the Museum store
across the street from Fawcett's. QUOTE of the SHOW: "I just
bought my 3rd last boat!" Speaker was smiling.
Katy Beemer, a loyal
Murphy-ite who crews on
Trouble, asked, "Would a schizophrenic be
disqualified from a single-handed race?" The Murphster thinks not, but the
race committee would have to take down both finish times and average the
score.
What's this? A Visiting Skippers
Program? Two boats in the A Fleet had visiting skippers aboard
during yesterday's final day of CCV racing in 2005. Bob
Mosby, skipper of Cyrano, road with Phil Briggs
and the Feather team and Sanford Richardson
had John Hanna (Battlewagon) and Case
Whittemore (Patriot) on board Kahuna. No
tussles for the helm were reported.
Later this month, when Sledd Shelhorse and the
Meridian crew go to Annapolis to compete in the US
SAILING United States Offshore Championship Regatta for the Lloyd Phoenix
Trophy, they will see a familiar face, i.e. PRO - Wayne
Bretsch. Wayne has judged at several high level southern Bay
events and regularly crews on Bruce Gardner's L'outrage, a competitor
in a couple of Southern Bay Race Weeks in PHRF A fleet. Another familiar person,
who will be involved as a judge for the Lloyd Phoenix event, is Dan
Trammell, a long time chief judge at Screwpile.
Fall and Winter racing is often weather-dependent.

SBRNYCU Rules Quiz Answer:
No! Under RRS 62.1, being fouled by another boat is NOT
grounds for redress. You can protest that boat (and he may be
disqualified (DSQ) which will effect the final standings in his
fleet), but your score cannot be changed through redress.
[Next week's question will deal with instances when you can request
redress.]
MURPHY'S LAW: It's always
good to know when redress is appropriate. How about
when your foulies are so odoriferous that members of the crew
maintain a 5 foot buffer zone around you? /S/ Murphy
the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
