# 275 SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE
Monday November 21, 2005 05:39PM
onTwo hundred eighty-seven years ago to the day,
November 21, 1718, Lieutenant Robert Maynard of the British
Navy stuck Blackbeard the Pirate's head on a pole and
stuck the pole at the entrance to Hampton River as a deterrent to
other pirates. Except for the frequent appearance of numerous
sailboat racers, the deterrent to "troublemakers" seems to have
worked. (For the uninitiated, Blackbeard, aka Edward Teach, did not
play well with others. Eddie loved to terrorize his victims by
putting lighted candles in his wild, black beard and swinging his saber at
them, so you know he ran with scissors too. )
FROSTBITE #4 - Light to no wind =
abandoned race = additional NFL-watching! No matter:
FROSTBITE #5 will go on Sunday after Turkey Day, the usual
time and place. Don't miss number 5 - it's the last of the
Series.
The GABOON RACE - Sunday, December 4 - A long
time southern Bay favorite sponsored by Hampton Yacht Club. This is a
staggered start (slower boats go first) event that let's you bring as many crew
as you choose, since PHRF crew limits do not apply for this non-sanctioned
event. However, you must have a current valid 2005 PHRF rating. All
boats must have lifelines in place. Gather up your friends, family, and
neighbors to whom you owe a fun time, and bring 'em along to watch or
ride. The start is off the HYC docks, beginning at 1300. The event
NOR cautions racers to "check your insurance policy for coverage of winter
sailing." For info contact: Phil Briggs at (757)
244-5477. Registration (where you may pick up your official starting
time) is at the HYC downstairs lounge on race day. The deadline for entry
is 1230 on race day, but it would probably help Phil if you'd let him know
as soon as you can that you are coming to race.
More than 20 interested sailors/racers showed up on
Saturday at HYC to hear Etchells guru Jud
Smith talk about the boats and about one-design keel boat fleet
development at the club level. John Keneson and
Eddie Williams led the initiative to bring Jud to Hampton Roads
along with two race-ready Etchells for folks to view and sail. It was
a great morning to mess about the boats. For information on Etchells
boats, fleets, and the class, contact John Keneson at (757) 481-9741 or
Eddie Williams at the Quantum loft (757) 727-0750.
Media Watch: That's John
Boon, skipper of Salsa Verde, his J/30 that
he races at York River Yacht Club, pictured in the feature article of the
December issue of Chesapeake Bay Magazine. John is on
page 53 in the article "Coastal U" by Marty LeGrand (page 48) which
is about the Virginia Institute of Marine Science
(Gloucester Point, VA). John's book Secrets of the
Tide gets a well deserved plug in the photo, too.
