onSCREWPILE 2006 NEWS FLASH!
The Screwpile Lighthouse Challenge has outgrown their
Zahniser's Yachting Center headquarters location. The regatta
has been headquartered at Z's for the last 13 year's, but space has become an
issue, thanks in great part to you, the racers, who continue to return year
after year and to bring newbies with you. So, the headquarters location
for 2006 will be just up the creek at the Holiday Inn Select in
Solomons. Screwpile Chairman, LG Raley, made the
change announcement "with sadness and joy at the same time,"
expressing appreciation for the long standing, successful partnership between
SPLC and Zahniser's and looking forward to the future in the new location at HI
Select, which has been a sponsor of SPLC since the event's
beginning. A word to the wise - it is not too early to begin
planning and to make ressies.
Match Racer Arabella Denvir (Irvington,
VA) teamed up with her daughter, Lisa Denvir, to
compete in the US Women's Match Racing Championship regatta in Fort Worth,
TX. Arabella and Lisa along with Jessamine Lewis and Wendy
Vann finished 7th. Sally Barkow won the event.

This coming weekend - GABOON
RACE - Sunday, December 4 - A long time southern Bay favorite sponsored
by HYC. This is a staggered start (slower boats go first) event that let's
you bring as many crew as you choose, since PHRF crew limits do not apply for
this non-sanctioned event. However, you must have a current valid 2005
PHRF rating. All boats must have lifelines in place. Gather up your
friends, family, and neighbors to whom you owe a fun time, and bring 'em along
to watch or ride. The start is off the HYC docks, beginning at 1300.
The event NOR cautions racers to "check your insurance policy for coverage of
winter sailing." For info contact: Phil Briggs at (757)
244-5477. Let Phil know that you intend to GO RACING!
To Fiddler's
Green: Betty Steffens, Marty
Steffens' wife and lifelong, devoted first mate, passed away
suddenly last week while on a holiday trip with Marty and their children
and their families. Heartfelt thoughts and prayers to Marty and the
Steffens family for their loss.
Paired Up: Two "newcomers" are on the
planning charts for 2006 PHRF racing in the Hampton Roads area of the
southern Bay and each will be the second half of a matched pair in PHRF A.
Jim Williams' Treaty of Ghent (Hobie 33) and
Richard Payne's J105 will be able to be speed test partners
with Christian Schaumloffel's Mirage and Pam
Burdett's Polar Express respectively. Also, new to B
fleet will be Bob Old's "new" J/30 to go along with Bill
Chandler's, John Hardy's and Rusty Burshell's J/30s. Of
course, there are several J105s racing out of the Fishing Bay/Rappahannock area
as well as J/30s on the York River.
Tyler Moore and Jesse Falsone won the 5o5
class recently at the HYC One-Design Regatta. The dynamic duo is
planning to do the Worlds in Hayling Island, UK this coming
July.
Ken Saylor was feted by family and friends at
the North Sails loft on Bridge Street (Hampton) after yesterday's racing.
It was a significant birthday (aren't they all?) for Ken, but you will
have to deal with him directly to find out just which "BIG __0" he has
reached! Happy Birthday, Ken!
Collegiate Racing: Old
Dominion finished 5th and Christopher Newport University finished 8th
among 16 teams competing at the SAISA-MAISA Regatta hosted Nov 18-19 at College
of Charleston.
Dave Wilbar, who has racing roots that go all
the way back to the Willoughby Racers (Norfolk), is the new Development
Director for the Virginia Maritime Heritage Foundation, i.e. schooner
Virginia.
MURPHY'S LAW: Usually,
this is the week I have to cut back calorically, because I have
eaten sooooo much over the Thanksgiving holiday. No
problem this year, though. I have developed something that eases the
Thanksgiving hit on the calorie total. Get a drumstick or any
other favorite turkey part and soak it in your favorite lite beer,
then gulp it down; there, you have it - Turkey Lite. Now, on to
the Christmas feasting! I am developing Mincemeat Pie Lite.
/S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us
all.
