on2006 PHRF Southern Bay Fleet Splits Remain
Unchanged for 2006: It's official - the PHRF Class
splits for the southern Bay (Region 4) remain the same as last
year. PHRF A - up to 115; PHRF B - 116 to
166; PHRF C - 167 and higher. PHRF Non-spinnaker
will be sailed allowing two headsails downwind unless the sailing
instruction specifically states differently.
PHRF RENEWALS
WILL BE MAILED OUT DURING THE LAST WEEK OF DECEMBER.
Don't wait to renew or apply for your 2006 valid rating
certificate. If you have made changes to the boat, sails, etc.
, get your paperwork started right away, since the handicappers review all
changes before issuing the 2006 valid rating certificate. Go to the
PHRF of the Chesapeake web site at www.phrfchesbay.com for details on
the application process. If you are applying for a "first time" rating on
your boat, get the application from the web site, gather the required info,
and get started on the process now. It's easy, but it does take
time.
Cyrano wins Gaboon Overall.
With everyone on board wearing a Santa hat, Bob Mosby's Cyrano
was one of the last boats to be released from the starting area in the annual
season finale, staggered start race yesterday. Even though the winds
gusted early on to 30+ knots, they lay down nicely during the race and the
sailing Santas were able to pass almost the entire fleet and cross the finish
line in Hampton Creek first. Top 5 boats OVERALL in the 16 boat fleet
were: 1.Cyrano, Bob Mosby;
2.Meridian, Sledd Shelhorse; 3.Feather,
Phil Briggs; 4.Incentive, Louie
Lewis; 5.Independence, Graham
Field. So, Bob and the Santas won the famous Gaboon trophy
- a brass spittoon - for 2005. That spittoon will look good beside
Cyrano's Frostbite Series first place silverware!
Another new boat to PHRF A in 2006:
Sledd Shelhorse and the Meridian crew have a new ride for the
coming season - a school bus yellow, 2004 Farr 36! She will come up from
Charleston, during the off season and be readied for the spring season
here. Flush deck and asymmetric chute. That makes two new sprit
boats in "A" fleet (Richard Payne's J/105 is already announced)
and brings the total to 4 (Kahuna, Richardson, and
Polar Express, Burdett). And, rumor has it
that Craig Cutter is very close to a decision
on a sprit boat , too.

Here is the Christmas gift option
extraordinaire - Winch Buddy@. It's a battery operated winch
turner that looks like a cross between a Smith and Wesson six
shooter and a home builders dream nail gun. And, it comes with a
carrying case (think holster). Skippers who have been to crew sensitivity
training will want one for each crew member who works behind the mast.
Picture the scene - early pre-race morning, advancing four abreast down the
dock, quick-draw Winch Buddies slung low in their belts, THE CREW - on
their shirts the motto "Winch Buddy grinds more tail!"
And, she sails too!
Gabby (Gabrielle) Lyons won the 1st place award at
the Estuarine Research Foundation Scientific Conference for her poster
presentation on the Composition of Riverine Derived Phosphorus in Sediments from
the Cariaco Basin in Venezuela. (Try saying that three times before you
jibe.) Gabby is a senior majoring in Marine Science at Hampton
University. She came to Hampton from Trinidad and is a skipper on the HU
sailing team.
Finish up your creation for the Southern Bay Race Week
T-shirt Design Contest - deadline is December 15 - first place
prize in each category is $150 and some cool Goslings / Black Seal Cup
gear for first as well as second places, e.g. Gosling's jackets and
shirts. You do not have to be computer capable to do your design -
hand-drawn, for the purists among us, will be just fine.
Remember, fun catch phrases are good - for example, "Black Seal Cup - Rum fun in
the southern sun!" For info, contact Leigh Morgan at leigh.morgan2@verizon.net
The Spinnaker World According to PHRF:
If you sail in a PHRF Spinnaker fleet, whether you fly a symmetric or
an asymmetric chute, be sure to check the changes and clarifications
to PHRF's "Standard Sail and Equipment Specifications" section.
Paragraphs 5 and 8D reflect the changes - go to the web site at www.phrfchesbay.com to see the new/revised
(for 2006) wording/info.
