onTo Fiddler's Green: Alice
Eberwine passed on Saturday. Alice was beloved mate of 61 years
to Bumps Eberwine and mother to David Eberwine. The father-son team has
long dominated the southern Bay PHRF A racing scene in their J36, Sea
Star. Alice will be remembered as a person to whom sweet and
lovely always applied. She was honored with special reverence by
those who knew her best - her family.

FEATHER AND SMOKE ARE 1 - 0
IN 2006 ! Yesterday, 39 southern Bay boats, skippers, and
crews, gave in to New Year's craziness and hit the race
course. Pushing aside remains of New Year's Eve
celebrations and early winter racing rust, these hardy souls went racing in one
of the two long standing New Year's Day events that seem to gain in popularity
each time the calendar changes. Neither event featured an abundance of
wind, but there was enough, even though some anchors were deployed along the
way. Here's how things went:
2006 NEW YEAR'S MADNESS
RACE, co-sponsored by Old Point Comfort Yacht Club and
Hampton Yacht Club, festivities began with breakfast at HYC and a staggered
start off the docks there. A strong out going current and a pushing,
light (4 knots) northerly breeze rewarded the most cautious starters and
caused some consternation among those trying to avoid the dreaded
OCS. 22 of the 30 starters finished the race within the time limit for the
post-race party. OPCYC hospitality was outstanding and the food and drink
up to its usual high standards. RESULTS: Overall Winner
and winner in A Fleet- Feather,
J36, Phil Briggs. Finishing 2nd overall and 2nd
in A Fleet was Gremlyn, Greg Cutter's
brand new Elliott 770. Dave Bouchard's Santana 35,
Ganar!, the only B Fleet boat racing, finished 6th
overall. C Fleet: 1.Dave Taylor,
@#$%&!!!, J24 (3rd overall); 2.Dana Dillon,
Amarylyn, Catalina 30 (5th overall); 3.Brendan
Drinkwater, Roswell, Kirby 25 (8th overall). Non-Spin
Fleet: 1.Tom Peddy, Impulse, Catalina 34
(4th overall); 2.Steve Ritz, Excelsior, Cal 2-30 (7th
overall); 3.Jerry Lotz, Faith, Seahorse 34 (9th
overall). Non-Spin 2 Fleet: 1. Bob Wagner, Sea
Slipper II, Catalina 25; Cruising 1: 1.Gordon
Johnson, Didi Mau, Bene 390; 2.John Lones,
Ali-Ru, Morgan 36; 3.Jim Beaudry, Pegasus,
Col 30. Cruising 2: 1.Raleigh Martin, Second
Wind, Ericson 27; 2.Jim Van Dyke, Playtime,
Hunter 31; 3.Bob Gumpright, Mollie Rose, MacGregor
25. Event chair: Jeff Rogers and Bob Williamson.
SYC ANNUAL NEW YEAR'S
RACE: Nine boats turned out for the Seaford Yacht Club event
and race chairman Chuck Eldred said the racers averaged
2.5 knots over the 9 mile course in light air. Dan
Smoker, Smoke, finished first, Mike Austin,
Movin' On, finished 2nd, and Bill Strauss,
Excalibur came in third. Whatever the conditions, there is
no better way to start the new year than racing sailboats.
Buck Rogers cooked up and served
44 quarts of his world famous racers' chili at the OPCYC
post-race party for the 2006 New Year's Madness Race.
Watch for another J/30 to arrive on the
southern Bay in May. Blew J (light blue hull) belongs to
Ben Ritger, who will be spending summers in Hampton Roads and
racing his light blue baby in the southern Bay fleet. Ben has crewed on
his dad John Ritger's Morgan 27, BCNU, and, now he and
his dad will campaign Blew J together.
IT WON'T BE
LONG UNTIL THE 2006 RACING SEASON BEGINS! Jimmie Mock, trimmer on Phil Briggs'
Feather, is officially designated as the keeper of this
countdown. Jimmiemock, AKA The Arbiter of
Time, says, "The socks come off and the gloves go on in just 87
days." (April 1st, is officially designated
as Sailboat Racers' Day, as a special subgroup for the April Fools'
Day tradition.)
Frank and Grace Ann Miller were spotted
during the holidays in one of their old haunts in Hampton. Frank skippered
Windblown, his Ericson 38, to top spot in last year's Southern
Bay Race Week Cruising Class with 5 bullets.
There's a "bad" rumor afoot - here's the correct
stuff: This year, DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME begins on
APRIL 2, and ends on OCTOBER 29. The Energy Policy Act
of 2005 changed the start time for DST beginning in 2007
(starts March 11, 2007 and ends November 4,
2007).
Phil Briggs, Feather, was last to
start and first to finish in the New Year's Madness Race. Phil has the
distinction of being past commodore of three area clubs: OPCYC (1974), CCV
(1983-84); and HYC (1991).
Rob and Andi Overton were in town for New
Year's Eve. For several years they raced their J24 Speed Limit on
the Bay and beyond before taking off to "see the world" in their bluewater
cruiser, Akka. Rob is about to complete the requirements to
become a Certified International Umpire. Akka is in Turkey and
the Overtons expect to cruise the Med this summer.
Burrrrrrrrr Award goes to York River Yacht Club
Frostbiters: They raced on the York River well into
December, the 18th to be exact, when weather is whatever you get and what you
get can be stinky. This year the York River racers, whenever possible, put
their windward mark just off Yorktown Beach, wow-ing the Sunday afternoon
strollers. RESULTS: 1. Four Seasons,
Mike Mastracci; 2.Hornet, Brian
Gregory; 3.Dream On, Steve Bowen;
4.Movin' On, Mike Austin. Race Chairman:
Steve Bowen.
PHRF RATING CERTIFICATE RENEWALS (and applications)
FOR 2006: Racers' top priority for 2006 season - get your PHRF
certificate this month! Here's the deal: Early this month PHRF will
send out renewal forms to all 2005 certificate holders - send
it back right away with your fees. If you do not receive the renewal form

race requirements as well as CCV High Point Race requirements. If
you did not have a rating certificate for 2005, you can call PHRF or go to the
website at www.phrfchesbay.com to get a copy of the
application form and information. Do it now - avoid the crush and
last minute panic later.
The Key West Race Week racers are the ones
with the wide, wide grins on their faces while they freeze their booties off
getting the boats ready to head south. Stay tuned and check out the
SpinSheet Magazine preview on KWRW in the January issue.
What's it all about? FODDOM
BIXPIX is in the name on a really nice looking North
Carolina race boat (J24) on the hard in Cobb's Marina and Boat Yard

The CBYRA Region 4 (Virginia) "big boat" racing
schedule is complete for 2006. Give your club's scheduler and
fleet captain a pat on the back. The schedulers have been working at this
since October. The plans are for the clubs' representatives to have
the final schedule (electronically) before mid-January.
There's no sailboat show this January in Philadelphia (returns
in 2007), but Strictly Sail Chicago goes from February 2-5,
2006. Take your fur undies!
Anna Turncliffe took 3rd in the Women's Laser Radial
World Championships in December. The event was held in Fortzleza,
Brazil. Awesome, Anna!

useful information and tools for real race
management. US SAILING Basic Race Management Course - February
18 - 19, 2006 - two half-day sessions (0900-1300), at Hampton
Yacht Club in Hampton, Virginia. This course is designed for

US SAILING Club Race Officer. The certification test will be given at the
conclusion of the course; taking this test is optional for any

Giles. For detailed information and/or to register, you may go to

your seat and to receive the pre-seminar information package.
CCV has adjusted its Spring and Fall Series
days to provide more racing without an increase in the number of days. As
in the past, each series runs on 3 separate Sundays in Hampton Roads
harbor. In 2006, each day will be a two-race day. So, more racing in
the same number of days.

MURPHY'S
LAW: Not that "Yers Truly" would
never inadvertently go overboard, but on a drifty day when the
postpone flag is flying, a dip is not beyond the realm of reason.
Imagine my delight when I discovered a new piece of boat canine gear - it's
called a Paws Aboard@. A fold away ladder, designed for even my short
legs, that the humans can deploy for my return to the boat at will!
/S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing
spirit in us all.
