# 281 SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE

Lin Mccarthy on Wednesday January 18, 2006 04:40PM

While we sit here in the gray, gloom of January, experiencing the Monday morning blahs, some of our number, the currently Lucky Ones, are heading for the starting line at Key West Race Week.  Think about it, pour another cup of coffee, and resolve to go in 2007 !

MIRAGE Takes 2nd in Class in 2006 Fort Lauderdale to Key West Race !  Southern Bay skipper Christian Schaumloffel and his crew on his Hobie 33, Mirage, finished 2nd (of 7) in their PHRF class and 5th overall in the fleet of 36 in this well known dash along the Florida Atlantic coast .  Mirage traveled by trailer to Lauderdale to race and, following the successful finish in Key West, hit the highway again for a layover in Jacksonville prior to some more winter racing later on in St. Pete.   In 2005, Mirage was overall winner of the Lauderdale to Key West.  Speaking via cell phone late Saturday, as he and two crew members towed their gray hull Hobie toward JAX,  Christian joked that the raters must have gotten their fill of the Hobies last year - Mirage was rated 12 seconds per mile faster for the 2006 event.  Special KUDOS to the southern Bay Mirage gang -  they are out there doing great!

SBRNYCU Racing Rules Quiz:  Two boats approach a leeward mark to be left to port.  One boat is on PORT, the other is on STARBOARD.  Which boat has the right of way?  Which boat is entitled to ROOM?   (See solution later in this issue.)

More on the Mini Designs:   Rafiki, Jan Brandt's mini, is a Mini Transat 6.50 (production version) designed by Marc Lombard, La Rochelle, France.   Jan and his wife purchased the professionally built hull and deck and finished the rest of the boat themselves.  It was launched last spring in Hampton.  The Brandts are tuning and refining now and have as a target the Singlehanded/Doublehanded Bermuda 1-2 race in June of 2007.  Rafiki  is 21.3  LOA with a Main and Jib sail area of 430 sq. ft. and Main and Spinnaker area of  1100 sq. ft.

JUNIOR SAILING INSTRUCTOR JOB OPENINGS:   Last week SBRNYCU reminded everyone that NOW is the time to apply to area yacht clubs and sailing associations for these coveted summer job positions!  Word has come from Hampton Yacht Club (Hampton, Virginia) that they are accepting applications now.  For info, contact the club office directly at (757) 772-0711 or go to their web site at www.hamptonyc.com

CBYRA Region 4 (southern Bay) High Point Added for J24 Class:  J24 racers will be able to compete for the new CBYRA Region 4 High Point during the coming season.  Five J24 regattas have been sanctioned to be scored for the regional high point and there were three events that were already CBYRA sanctioned that included in their format COD (Cruising One-Design) racing for the J24s.  The events in the Region are: sponsored by J24 Fleet 71 (HYC), Spring Regatta (Apr 1), Summer #1 Regatta (Jul 8), Summer Regatta #2 (Aug 20), and Fall Regatta (Oct 22); sponsored by FBYC, the FBYC J/24 Invitational (Sep 30 - Oct 1).  Already sanctioned and including COD racing for J/24s are Southern Bay Race Week (June 2, 3, and 4) [sponsored by HYC, CCV, and OPCYC], HYC "Big Boat" Annual (June 17), and Stingray Point Regatta (Sep 2 and 3) [sponsored by FBYC].

To compete for CBYRA High Point Awards  ALL  racers are reminded that the skipper must be an active member of CBYRA at the time of the event. This requirement is not news to PHRF and MORC racers; the same applies to J24 skippers and one-design racers going for the Region IV and/or Bay-wide high point.  So...  no,  you cannot wait to see how the season goes and then decide you'd like to pick up a nice shiny trophy.  Join now and get ready to roll - it's about racing!   It's easy to join - go on line to www.cbyra.org   or call (410) 269-1194.

Southern Bay Race Week T-Shirt Design Contest:  Regatta officials have announced the winners of the "without Black Seal logo" category of the contest.  Dave Chapman won first place and Lynn Colgate Cohen's entry took 2nd.  Look for the winning design, a list of "Top 10 Phrases Misunderstood at SBRW", to be a popular must-have.  The "with Black Seal logo" category top entries are being pondered by Gosling's - word on the winners of that category should come soon.

Arbiter of Time - Jimmie Mock Countdown:  75 days until the opening of the southern Bay racing season  (April 1st).

Rules Quiz Solution:   Entitlements depend on the lung power of the skippers involved, and...   For all  the answers, sign up for the January 28th  SBRNYCU  Racing Rules Seminar.  (Call 757-850-4225)

MURPHY'S LAW:    Bears, Colts, Broncos, Panthers ?   Obviously none can be legit contenders at the Super Bowl.  Where are the Beagles ?  Talk about a nose for the football - low slung and built for short yardage, and...  the beer sponsors love me!!   /S/  Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
