# 282 SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE

onKEY WEST RACE WEEK Tuesday Toppled Cash Flow
and Wairere Hopes. High winds - more than
30 knots according to unofficial reports - and choppy seas,
contributed to a short event for two North Carolina boats at 2006 KWRW.
After getting off to a great start on Day One with a 1st and a 6th in the PHRF 3
(15 boats) fleet, Lloyd Griffin's Hadley 40, Cash
Flow, lost her mast in Race 3 on Day 2 of the event. In the same race
on the same day Peter Hunter's Thompson 30,
Wairere (PHRF 2 (8 boats) fleet lost her stick. Neither
boat was able to make repairs to continue racing later in the
week. Meanwhile, a third North Carolina boat, Frank
Silver's Phantom (B-25), finished 9th in PHRF 7 (13 boats) for the
week. Two northern Bay boats that have competed in southern Bay
events in recent years did particularly well: Bruce
Gardner's L'Outrage, Bene 10M, took 1st place in the PHRF 5
fleet and John and Linda Edwards' Rhumb Punch
(J29), finished 3rd in the 12 boat PHRF 6 fleet.
$$$ - Some of Your Fuel Tax Money is Coming Back to
the southern Chesapeake Bay: Part of the BIG (Boating
Infrastructure Grant) funds are coming back to projects in the southern
Bay. In November the US Fish and Wildlife Service, administrator of the
program, awarded some of the $5 million to be shared in 8 states to Nauticus
Marina in Norfolk. The idea behind the funding is to help improve
facilities used by transient boaters (and, therefore, benefit local
waterfronts). For detailed info, check out page 22 of the January
issue of BoatUS Magazine, "BIG Returns on Fuel Tax", by Ryck
Lydecker.

Dave Revill recently returned to his
position on Feather's crew after a two year stint in China. Phil
Briggs, skipper/owner of the blue J/36, said David told him that one of the
things he missed most while in China was sailing in the SCREWPILE
LIGHTHOUSE REGATTA. Phil says count on it - Feather will
be at SCREWPILE 2006! David, by the way, is a former England 5o5 National
Champion!
If you plan to travel NC Route 32 between Suffolk and Edenton,
NC, anytime soon, check out the Sunrise Country Market at
Hobsville. Former southern Bay racer, Chris Pope
(Sugar Bear and WoolyBully bowman), has opened (previous owner
closed it in 2003) the store and says they make the best real
milkshakes south of the Arctic Circle.
The skipper and crew on Cash Flow at
KWRW are known for their ability to find silver linings in
adversity. However, friends reported that the dismasting on last Tuesday
tested the Green Machine Team's resolve. "They said that [after
the mast fell down] they discovered it was even too rough to fish!"
friends said.
Changing Face of Willoughby Spit: The
stuff in the restaurant at the tip end of The Spit has been auctioned off and
the plywood is up on the motel windows. Dave Baxter Sailmaker has
moved to Ocean View proper. He's on West Ocean View Avenue (2nd floor,
corner of West OV Ave and First View), over The Dollar General Store, across the
street from Greenies. Word is the dry storage boat shed on the tip end of
Willoughby will be coming down soon and everything will be replaced with
condos and townhomes.
Another J24 soon to join Fleet 71: Dave
Taylor plans to bring his "new to him" J24 from
Maryland within a couple of weeks. Dave found Hull #3800 (circa 1984) in
excellent condition just waiting to go racing. He says that with only a
little bit of "primping" she will be ready to go in the Fleet 71
Spring Regatta on April 1st. Matt Haskell is
expected to take on full ownership-skippership of @#$%&!!!,
aka Punctuation, the boat he and Dave co-owner in 2005.

MURPHY'S LAW: Back in the
day, when the sails were made of
canvas, great-grandfather Murphster raced at
KWRW in Force 7 winds. His legend has it that he bent on a
larger main and lapped spilled grog while trimming the chute on a power
reach! /S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in
us all.
