What a shame! Chuck
Monsees and the Rockette (J/29) crew, Christian
Schaumloffel and the Mirage (Hobie 33) crew, and
Dennis Hannick and the Radio Flyer (Tripp 26) crew
have to travel to Florida for the upcoming St. Petersburg NOOD Regatta
(February 17-19). A dirty job, but someone has to go.
The Volvos are Coming! Yesterday,
February 12, 2006, The Volvo Ocean Race boats began Leg Three of their
journey. They are now sailing from Melbourne to New Zealand - that's a
mere 1,450 miles jaunt. They are headed our way - expect them to finish
Leg Five, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to Baltimore, Maryland between April 17th
and 19th. There are grand plans in the making for their
visit (April finish of Leg 5 through May 7th start of Leg 6) on our
Bay. Stay tuned.
The CNU and ODU Intercollegiate Sailing Teams
will be traveling to South Carolina, this coming weekend for the Charleston
Spring Intersectional. Good luck, to our stars of the future.
Voodoo Chile, Tripp 33, gets the
"First for Now" at SOUTHERN BAY RACE WEEK
2006 award. Chile's skipper, Leroi
Lissenden and his partner Bob
Krushelnisky are first to enter SBRW, thereby laying
claim to the Early Bird Entry incentive of a passel of FREE regatta drink
tickets. Go to www.blacksealcup.com for entry info and
form or contact Leigh Morgan at (757) 726-9649.
Paperwork for the Day - Get your CCV
Membership Application in to Tom Peddy now. Tom needs it now in order
to include you on the membership list that will be published in the
2006 CCV Racing Guide. For info and forms call Tom at (757)
651-6804. This is a MUST DO for all skippers and crew .
Any southern Bay racer in the know has his or her personal copy of the
2006 CCV Racing Guide and membership is the only way to get one.
(Your copy of the Guide is included in your membership
fee.)
Boomer Muller, who crews on
Karl Petersen's Valkyrie, has gotten himself a 1978
Pearson 31, which he intends to race "on the side" in some races this coming
season when Valkyrie is not going out. Boomer says he
is about to rename Bay Chaser, so he'll no doubt be involved in
researching boat name-changing rules and regs! How to Rename Your
Boat, by John Vigor, is a great source for info on proper
renaming procedures.
Pearl in Peril: Keith
Carson's Morgan 24, Pearl, had an interesting Friday
afternoon in Hampton Roads harbor week before last. In a nutshell, during
the afternoon outing, Pearl left Willoughby Bay intending to sail
across the Harbor and back. Before she got back across the main channel,
the wind dropped, the radio pooped out, and the engine took a mid-winter
vacation. Pearl learned how the cream fill feels in an
inbound-outbound-cargo-ship cookie and she broke an anchor line while clinging
against terrific current to the edge of the Willoughby Bay channel that
runs along the HRBT. The story ended well, though. A 5 knot
breeze eventually brought Pearl back home. Skipper and crew sailed
her into her slip in the dark. (Pearl races in the
PHRF C and NS fleets in the southern Bay.)
Chuck Eldred, skipper of Gail Force,
Hobie 33, sailing out of Seaford Yacht Club in the York River area
and beyond, has taken on a new winter challenge and has come up with a
1st place. Chuck won the CR 914 Midwinter Regatta in Fort Lauderdale
earlier this month. Chuck sailed in the silver fleet division which is
designated for new and inexperienced at racing radio controlled
boat owners-skippers. Congrats! to Chuck.
Cliff O'bara has acquired a "new to him"
C&C 29, which he plans to bring around to Poquoson from Warwick
Yacht Club as soon as there is a good weather weekend. Congratulations!
Cliff.
LEARN to USE JAVA SCORE - Anyone Involved in SCORING
RACES: CBYRA Region 4 JAVARAMA is all set for April 8, Saturday,
0900-1200, at Fishing Bay Yacht Club. There will be no charge
for the clinic (and, pending plans, only a moderate charge for a light
lunch). Our CBRYA vice-pres for Region 4, Tom Roberts,
says JAVARAMA is open to all Region 4 clubs that want to learn about
and/or to use JAVASCORE. Interested participants may bring a laptop
computer. Wireless internet access is available to anyone so
equipped. If you intend to bring a regular computer, you should bring an
insulating power strip and arrive early so you can get set up. Also, if you
can, it will be helpful for participants to bring with them the (free)
downloaded program from the web site http://www.gromurph.org/javascore/
Tom plans to make this a hands-on experience where participants learn to
use, really use, JAVASCORE, from registering boats and skippers all the way to
entering scores and uploading results to CBYRA and/or other web sites.
This is a much needed, very good learning opportunity. Stay tuned for
reminders and additional info.

MURPHY'S
LAW: Dog Tales for the truly bored
with winter: A badly limping racing beagle stops in
Solomons and goes in the Tiki Bar. He goes right up to the bar and says,
"I'm looking for the man who shot my paw!" /S/ Murphy the
Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
