Southern Bay racer, Alan Bomar (J24,
roundabout), reports that the John Rousmaniere presentation
hosted last week by Fishing Bay YC was great. Alan and his son,
William, and fellow racer, Christian
Schaumloffel, traveled to Richmond to join a passel of
Rappahannock River area sailors at the event. Alan said the
presentation centered on Rousmaniere's new book,
Sleek. The famous sailing author signed
William Bomar's copy of Sleek.
TODAY IS PRESIDENTS' DAY -
And, for the purists among us, George Washington's Birthday is
Wednesday, February 22nd. Thank George for the origin of
this national holiday and, among many things, for freezing his buns
off crossing the Delaware to get to Trenton.
NOOD-Lite: The St. Petersburg NOOD (National
Offshore One-Design) Regatta got in one-half day of racing - Friday and
Sunday were totally wind-less, but... who cares, it was also snow-less!
Chuck Monsees' TEAM Rockette tied for the J-29
class regatta championship in the abbreviated racing (3-1-3-3), but had to
settle for 2nd once the tiebreaker was applied. Eight J29s gathered at St. Pete
for the event. On their course, the J/29s got in 4 very short races (3
legs of .8 miles), and that was the most number of races on any of the 3
courses. Crewing on Rockette were: Dave Alexander,
Ken Saylor, Bill Groeninger, Ernest Davenport, Lee Wallio, and
Frank and Melissa Silver. Meanwhile, also on the
A course, Christian Schaumloffel and the Mirage team
finished 2nd in the 6 boat Hobie 33 class (2-2-1-2). Other southern
Bay (and beyond) boats sailing at the St. Pete NOODs were: J24 (24
boats): B.Till/Cowen (Wilmington, NC), Large Red
Delicious - 19th. Ultimate 20 (9 boats): Don Corey
(Cornelius, NC), Uh-huh - 4th; Brian Hennessey
(Southport, NC), Ultimutt - 8th. Tripp 26 (6 boats):
Skip Hildebrand (Cornelius, NC), Hunting Tripp - 2nd;
Dennis Hannick (King George, VA), Radio Flyer -
4th.
Cupid Makes a Direct Hit ! Valentine's
Day was, of course, a big day for Cupid - especially in the racing
community. Of special note, Leigh Morgan, a national
champion Hampton One Design-er and event chairman of Southern Bay Race Week
accepted her main man David Chapman's proposal for
marriage. Congratulations to Dave and Leigh!
Doug Amthor and sister-in-law Barb
Amthor sailed their shorts off and finished second at the
5o5 Mid Winter Championships hosted by Isla de Sol Yacht
Club. Barb said there were teams from New England, Maryland,
Florida, Colorado, Australia, and, of course, the southern Chesapeake Bay at the
St. Petersburg event.

CALENDAR - MARCH into the 2006
RACING SEASON: It's all about getting ready to GO
RACING!
March 1st to 31st: Line up crew or line
up boat. Work on boat bottom (weather will try to deter you). Replace
messenger lines with running rigging at exorbitant expense. Grease
and check winches. Inspect blocks and all other deck hardware. Check
out exit boxes on mast. Is the Windex@ still up there? Take your
rigger and your sailmaker for a beer - get on their calendars. Buy those
new class flags, so you are not mistakenly scored in the wrong fleet.
Locate your protest and yellow flags and place in cockpit on the miniscule
chance you might use them. Remove skanky beer cans that are holding down
float switch in bilge. Take sails to sail laundry - the mildew smell could
asphyxiate the bowman. Check your dockbox or car trunk for foulies left
there in November-it's that smell thing again. If you are a J24 racer, cut
your toenails so you are ready to go barefoot while racing. Arrange a
launch date with your boatyard that is at least two days before or after
St. Patrick's Day - the aftermath of green beer is not a pretty sight. For
a momentary respite from your schedule, go toy with your sailmaker -
advise him that the bankruptcy thing is going to make that $10K sail order
you placed in December out of the question. Get the crew shirts and
hats embroidered - use the correct spelling this time. And, last but
not least, clean your racing platform top to bottom so you can enjoy the
sparkle. It's almost time to GO RACING!
And, for your spare time:

LAST REMINDER: SKIPPERS, CREW, and
FRIENDS: To be included in the CCV membership listing for the

application forms are available on the CCV web site at www.ccvracing.org or you may call him

This past weekend the US SAILING Race Management
Course at Hampton Yacht Club drew attendees from 7 states:
Michigan, Kentucky, West Virginia,
Louisiana, North Carolina, New Jersey , and, of
course, Virginia. US Sailing lead instructor John
McCarthy assisted by Glenn Giles, put out lots of great information, answered
dozens of questions and administered the Club Race Officer Certification
Test. A good time was had by all! Special thanks to HYC club manager
Bill Rice and his staff for their hospitality.
MURPHY'S
LAW: Here's a Birthday Bow-Wow to President George
Washington! I'm doing a cherry flavored brewski with lunch in his
honor! /S/ Murphy the Racing
