you know who you are - get those babies in the water! It is time to

IDES OF APRIL - April 15th,
Saturday Remember, between 6 and 8 pm you absolutely MUST be at
the SpinSheet Magazine Crew Listing Party - SOUTH, hosted at
Marker 20 (downtown Hampton). If you know what a sailboat is,
wish you could get on one to be part of a crew, and/or you own one and are
looking for crew people, you are qualified to attend. This will be the
inaugural event for the special SOUTH Bay edition of a long time traditional
event hosted in Annapolis every spring. See you there!
SBRNYCU Rules Quiz: Does
an extended bowsprit (pole) on an asymmetrical chute boat count in
determining whether or not there is an overlap? (see answer further
in this issue)
CCV TUNE UP RACE DAY: "Cold as a
witch's...." - well, you know the saying. It was bitter cold
and very windy (22-26 gusting to 30 knots). Of the 15-16 boats initially
gathered, a dozen took on the conditions and zoomed around the course set inside
Hampton Bar. Then, they got their frozen selves in to enjoy the Sunday
fare at the HYC lounge of Irish coffee, hot soup and talk. All in
all a nice spring outing. On the course, Christian
Schaumloffel's Hobie 33, Mirage, took line honors,
Marty Steffens' Colgate 26, Riptide, was the only PHRF
B boat to race, Ben Cuker's Callinectes was the
first PHRF C boat to finish, and Tom Peddy's Impulse
overcame an equipment snafu to lead the PHRF Non-Spin contingent to the
finish line. Polar Express, Pam Burdett's J/105,
tried out her new PHRF (as opposed to one-design) sail
configuration and had a good romp in the heavy air. Dave
Taylor's "new to him" J24, Midmorning Buzz, finished 2nd
across the line among the 4 PHRF C boats. As is traditional, scores
were not corrected for the Tune Up. CCV SPRING SERIES
Races #1 and #2 are all set for Sunday ,April 23rd. For info
contact: John McCarthy at (757) 850-4225.
The number of asymmetrical chute / bowsprit
boats on the southern Bay is growing. Among those already
announcing their intentions to campaign in the 2006 season are:
Meridian 2 ( previously known as Grins), Sledd
Shelhorse; Polar Express, Pam Burdett;
Rafiki, Jan Brandt; Flying
Colors, Richard Payne, Gremlyn, Greg
Cutter; Kahuna, Sanford Richardson; and, a
well established plethora of J105's in Fishing Bay. So, be careful at
those make roundings - don't want to end up with someone else's point-y end in
your boat!
Check your PHRF certificate and make sure you have a
4P in the Equipment Category block. Call Stew Buckler,
Executive Secretary, if you need to get your certificate changed to 4P. Stew
can be reached at (410) 414-3270.
At FBYC a number of skippers, crew and wannabe crewbies began
their race boat Crew Training Sessions on a bleak and
threatening Saturday. David Hazlehurst, head honcho and
organizer of this year's program, estimated they had about 60 folks involved -
awesome.

April 12th, and the BBSA Willoughby Racers' start their first season series

Creek sailing, contact John Bergman (757) 362-3775 and regarding

Approximately 150 racers attended the annual CCV
Racing Clinic hosted at The Mariners' Museum last week.
Organization officials dispensed info on the CCV Crew Training Program (Neal
Garrett) and the New Racing Skipper Training Program (Ben
Cuker). John McCarthy gave the main presentation on the "2006
General Sailing Instruction from a Racers' Perspective". And, members
picked up their personal copies of the newly published 2006 CCV Racing
Guide. The CCV Racing Guide now is available for
member pick-up at the Hampton Yacht Club office. Skippers and crew who
wish to join CCV may do so at the HYC office -
(757) 722-0711. Membership includes a copy of the CCV Racing Guide
and is the only way to obtain a copy of the Guide.
Rules Quiz Answer: Only, if it is
in its "normal" position, i.e. deployed while flying the spinnaker or as the
boat is "about to round" a mark just prior to setting the chute.
MURPHY'S LAW: At the post- Tune Up
Race (aka freeze-a-thon) gathering yesterday, I heard one of the skippers,
who along with his crew, went out, but decided not to stay to race, say, "Yep,
we looked around and saw that they already had enough crazy people, so we came
on back in!" /S/ Murphy
