Southern Bay Race Week Photos
Info: In between crewing duties on a Venue 1 mark boat
(Black Dog / Hamilton), Bill Samuelson snapped himself
silly taking pics of racing boats. He and Karen have now filtered the more
than 1,500 shots down to a manageable number and are getting ready to mail out a
complementary CD of their efforts to each spinnaker fleet skipper. Bill
and Karen are also working on the idea of a website where pictures can be
"dumped" for racers in the future.
HYC ANNUAL "Big Boat" REGATTA - this coming
Saturday, June 17. Next up on your "stay tuned up
for Screwpile" list is HYC's Annual Regatta this weekend. The racing venue
is located off Norfolk's Ocean View, in the same general vicinity as SBRW's
spinnaker venue. This is a CBYRA sanctioned regatta and starts are offered
for all PHRF fleets. The warning signal is set for 1155. For info
contact Kathy or Malcolm Brady at (757) 723-3244. Entries are due
by 1200 hours on Friday, June 16. And, there's a post-race social for
racers et al on the HYC dock - keg and crabs! A summertime
delight.
Totally unsubstantiated dock
rumor: Mumblings concerning interest in rejuvenating the much
loved Down the Bay Race for the Virginia Cup. Hampton YC
holds the deed to the Cup. There is said to be an Annapolis area yacht
club interested in hosting the start with HYC hosting the finish. So, the
ingredients are there (maybe), but the two host clubs have to open discussion
for the cake to bake.
Lightnings Strike! Of the 16 Lightnings
racing Saturday and Sunday in the Dixie District regatta hosted by Hampton Yacht
Club, there was one that ran away with 1st place. A. Terhune
took a bullet in each of the first 5 races and threw-out his last
race 2nd place finish for a total of 5 points. S. Constants took 2nd for
the regatta (10 pts) and B. Foreman finished 3rd (20 pts). PROs: Malcolm
and Kathy Brady.
When the 100th Newport to Bermuda Race
hits the starting line this Friday, June 16, the southern Bay will be well
represented by 3 area boats: Orion, "Pat"
Patterson's Taylor 41, sailing out of Hampton Yacht Club;
Conrad Hall's Morris 40, Shearwater; and,
Frank Stewart's Beneteau 405, Resurgence. Both
Shearwater and Resurgence homeport at Norfolk Yacht and
Country Club and will include several NYCC crew members - on
Shearwater, Bill Wheary and Mark
Shaw, and on Resurgence, Carl Bryant
completes the compliment of the all-NYCC crew. Orion plans to
compete in 2 Onion Patch races in Bermuda and already has taken a 2nd
place in her class in the NYYC Annual Regatta races which are part of the
OP. Kudos to all the southern Chesapeake Bay racers competing in
this prestigious event!
YRYC York River Cup - Saturday, June
17. Up on the York River, sponsored by York River Yacht Club,
here's a CBYRA sanctioned regatta with starts for all PHRF fleet racers as well
as a cruising class. For a race special on dockage ($10/boat) contact York
River Yacht Haven at (804) 642-2156. Note: YRYC, race headquarters and the
site of the post-race social, is right there at York River Yacht
Haven. Race awards will be presented at the barbecue social
dinner. For info contact Dan Fox at (757) 564-5888. Entries are
due by this Friday, June 16.
So, who has been holding the original Bermuda Race
Trophy, presented in 1906 by Sir Thomas Lipton for the race?
Well, our Mariners' Museum picked it up in an auction at
Christie's in 1982... and nobody's saying how it got on the auction
block!
Talk about a stable platform for
photos: Peter Jurewicz is the new
owner of Thimble Shoal Light, yep, that would be the Lighthouse
itself. Peter has been, among other things, snapping a
few photos of sailboats that happen by while he is at the TSL. His shots
are awesome. You might want to contact him and arrange a
sail-by!
Watch out - June 23-24, weekend after this coming, is
the 19th Annual Cock Island Race. Break out your Hawaiian
shirt, your hula skirt, and/or your chicken suit! This is a fun-fun-fun
event aimed at racers and legendary for it's party. Go up the river
the and party on Friday, race and party on the river Saturday, and ride the
current home on Sunday. For info contact City of Portsmouth Parks and
Recreation at (757) 393-8481 or PRO Dick Boykin at (757) 890-0093.
100th Newport-Bermuda Race factoid: On
Friday, when the 270, plus or minus, entries ranging from 32 feet to 98 feet,
cross the starting line in Narragansett Bay, they will be beginning a 635 mile
journey that ends within sight of Bermuda's St. David
Lighthouse.
