# 306 SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE
Monday July 24, 2006 04:55PM
onHUZZAH! Bang the drum! A special salute to
all the southern Bay racers who met the Screwpile Lighthouse Challenge last week
in Solomons, Maryland. They sailed into the waters "on the Far Side",
raced their brains out, and several returned with heavy silverware.
Good on ya'll. The Southern
Bay Brigade consisted of 25 boats racing in the 145 boat Screwpile
fleets in the 3 day, 6 race regatta. Here's a summary of how each boat did
in her fleet: Meridian (Sledd Shelhorse), 2nd;
Kahuna (Sanford Richardson), 3rd; Wairere (Peter
Hunter), 8th; Cash Flow (Lloyd Griffin, Jr), 2nd;
Liberty (Pete Morrison), 8th; Double Eagle (Sam
Mitchener), 9th; Radio Flyer (Dennis Hannick), 11th;

NOT Smith Point Race, July 30: THIS COMING
SUNDAY! This is a mid-summer favorite for southern Bay
racers. The intent is to stage a middle distance race around southern
Bay race marks. It is part of the CCV High Point race program and counts
in the CBYRA high point tally too. For info contact John McCarthy at (757)
850-4225. OPEN TO ALL. Starts for all PHRF classes. First warning
set for 0900. Must have a valid PHRF rating certificate, including
4P Equipment Category. Deadline for entries is
1300 hours, Saturday, July 29. Traditional CCV social (free hot
dogs, soda, and brewskies) and awards presentation following the
race. Starting area is in the Bay off Buckroe. [NOTE: Those holding
a 2006 CCV Racing Membership are automatically entered and fees already
paid.]
SBRNYCU Rules Quiz: A boat is several
lengths across the line at the starting gun. The race committee does not
raise an "X" flag nor make a sound signal. The boat, hearing no sound and
seeing no recall flag, does not return to start. After the race, the boat
is scored OCS (On Course Side, aka "over early"). Is the boat entitled to
redress? [Answer is further in this issue.]
Two significant charity races take place in
the southern Bay during the first weekend of August. So, here's a chance
to combine a little bit of giving with racing.
2006 LITTLE CREEK REGATTA -
August 5 (Saturday). This is a non-sanctioned event sponsored by
BBSA, the proceeds of which are donated in support of St. Judes Children's
Research Hospital. The race is open to spinnaker, non-spinnaker
(single headsail only), and cruising classes along with cruising catamaran,
performance multihull, and beach cat classes. There is a mandatory
skippers meeting at 1930 hours, Friday, August 4, at Bay Point Marina on Little
Creek in Norfolk. Note: Deadline for entries is August
1. For info contact Bill Mellen or Mary Moore at (757)
362-4819. "Sailing for a Cure"
HOSPICE REGATTA XII - August 6
(Sunday). This is a CBYRA sanctioned event, sponsored by
HYC. The overall winner of this event is eligible to represent the
Hampton Roads area in the National Hospice Regatta Invitational Championship
in spring of 2007. The proceeds from this race are donated to Hospice
Regatta of Greater Hampton Roads. There are starts for all PHRF
classes as well as for a special Hospice (Cruising) Class. Hospice class
entries are due August 2 (to allow for time to assign special Hospice ratings);
PHRF class entries are due before the race committee boat leaves the dock
(approximately 0900 on race day). For information contact Glenn Giles
at (757) 851-9690. "The Challenge of Sailing for
Others"
Battle of the Chesapeake Trophy comes
to the southern Bay: Hampton Yacht Club
racers at 2006 Screwpile brought home the trophy awarded to the yacht
club/sailing association whose top 5 boats scored best overall when measured
against participating clubs from up and down the Bay. Of the HYC boats,
three took top spot in their respective fleets - Sea Star, Bumps and
David Eberwine; Cool Change, Rusty Burshell; and Midnight
Mistress, Jake Brodersen. Finishing 2nd in her fleet, was
Meridian, Sledd Shelhorse and scored in the BOC competition by virtue
of their 3rd place finish were Kahuna,Sanford Richardson or
Feather, Phil Briggs. Other HYC boats contributed to the effort
by earning participation bonus points. This is the first time a southern
Bay club has won the award, Annapolis YC having won the BOC in 2004 and
2005.
42nd ANNUAL VIRGINIA GOVERNOR'S CUP ONE DESIGN
REGATTA: Saturday - Sunday, August 5-6, at Ware River Yacht Club
(Gloucester, VA). Expect Albacore, Hampton One Design, Mobjack,
Laser and other classes that apply with a minimum of 5 boats. Usually
junior classes for Laser and 420 make at this traditionally great regatta.
Regatta Chairman is Clayton James (757) 952-1815. For registration
and/or general information contact Rick Klein at (804)
693-5629.
RACING "WHODAT"? Who's
Virginia Brown? She is the lady who 25 years
ago founded a phenomenon known as The Hospice Regattas, which has raised
more than $15 million for local hospices. There are now 19 Hospice
Regattas located throughout the country and every dollar raised by the
all-volunteer crew is donated to local hospices. In the southern Bay we
have two Hospice Regattas: Hospice Regatta XII [see item
above] which supports Greater Hampton Roads hospices, and the Hospice Turkey
Shoot Regatta (October 6-8) which supports hospice groups in the Northern
Neck, Middlesex County, Tappahannock and Gloucester.

Rules Quiz Answer: The race committee
certainly made an error by not, as per RRS 29.1, promptly displaying
code flag "X" with one sound. HOWEVER, RRS 62.1 says
that to be granted redress the boat's score must be made significantly worse
through no fault of her own. Therefore, it is
probable that the protest committee would not grant the boat redress, since she
was so far over the line that she should have known it, even without proper
signals from the race committee. Then too, it is each boat's
responsibility to know if she has started properly and, if she has not, to
correct her error.
MURPHY'S LAW: Over
early - OOOOPS! Gotta go back. If you can't
do the time, don't do the crime. Oh, yeah, and you better get that bowman
a new set of specs. /S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle,
the sailing spirit in us all.
