FBYC 67th ANNUAL ONE-DESIGN REGATTA:

Fishing Bay Yacht Club event is a must do regatta for small boat racers.
The location so close to the site of the Governor's Cup makes the two weekends a
special summer happening.
AUGUST is hot... what better time for southern
Bay racers to SAIL HOT!!
NOT Smith Point Race was
not a typical NSP, as all 39 boats finished in moderate
breezes with time to spare. This summertime favorite more often than
not, according to local lore, ends up in a drifter, followed by a malicious
thunder boomer on the way back to the dock, well after the time limit has
expired. Not so yesterday. Chessie offered up a 9 to 12 knot breeze
just in time for the early morning (0900) start of the lower Bay fixed marks
race. Christian Schaumloffel and the crew
of his Hobie 33, Mirage, corrected to first in the large PHRF A
fleet (15 boats). Dave McConaughy, won PHRF B in his
J/30, White Boat, and Ben Cuker, Callinectes,
Cal 30-3, led PHRF C. In the 10 boat PHRF Non-Spin fleet, Jake
Brodersen, Midnight Mistress, C&C 35, took first and
continued his Screwpile winning ways. RESULTS: PHRF A (15
boats): 1.Mirage, Hobie 33, Christian
Schaumloffel; 2.Sea Star, J36, Bumps and David
Eberwine; 3.Namesake, Olson 30, Craig
Olsen. PHRF B ( 8 boats): 1.White
Boat, J30, Dave McConaughy; 2.Virginia H,
Soverel 30, Andy Armstrong; 3.PF Flyer, Pearson Flyer,
Larry Preddy. PHRF C (6 boats):
1.Callinectes, Columbia 30-3, Ben Cuker;
2.Midmorning Buzz, J/24, David Taylor;
3.Incentive, O'Day 27, Louie Lewis. PHRF
Non-Spin (10 boats): 1.Midnight Mistress, C&C 35,
Jake Brodersen; 2.Faith, Seahorse 34,
Jerry Lotz; 3.Wiki-Wiki, Pearson 26,
Rodney Paice. PRO: John McCarthy; Official Scorer:
Dick Boykin. NOTE: The next CCV event is the CCV
Founders Race, Sunday, August 13.
Stand-in skipper on Sea Star, Bumps
and David Eberwine's J/36, for the CCV Not Smith Point Race yesterday was
Brian McCauley, who, up until a few years ago, used to
drive his own blue hull hottie, Conspiracy, in PHRF A.
Polar Express, the J105 formerly owned and
raced by Pam Burdett, has gone North to its new owner in
Annapolis. Pam, after having sail tested an Esse 850, has purchase one and
expects to take delivery in September. Look for the 28 footer that looks
like an "America's Cup boat", but can be sailed by 3 people. Pam says
during the sail test " 2 of us handled her with chute up in 20
knots!"
Special SBRNYCU SORI (Source of Reliable Info)
on the schooner VIRGINIA, retired
Virginia Pilot Capt. Bill Johnson, reports that
Friday a heavy squall messed with our beloved Virginia, causing some
damage to her foregaff and the jib clew to fail.
This morning former ODU champion sailor, Anna
Tunnicliff, is at Santa Monica Bay, tied for 1st place after two races
at the 2006 Laser Radial Worlds. Anna is currently ranked
2nd in the world. This championship event will run for 6 days. Keep
your fingers and toes crossed for Anna.

MURPHY'S LAW: Yrs
Truly, The Murphster, like a lot of southern Bay racers, knows all
about the schooner Virginia, having followed her construction every
step of the way and put a paw print on her innards when she was a mere
outline of her current self. If I were to hire on as ship's
Sailing Dawg and Racing Advisor, I would have to have as a condition of my
contract a hand, ooops - paw, in the selection of the cook!
/S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us
all.
