CCV FOUNDERS RACE was a full day of
sailing in the Bay off Norfolk's Ocean View. Racing began around 1100
and the final finisher cleared the line just after 1530 ( 30 minutes
before expiration of the time limit). A furious flooding current caused a
number of boats over-early trouble during the starting sequence, but most
were able to redeem themselves with a respectable finish.
RESULTS: PHRF A (11 boats): 1.Meridian 2,
Sledd Shelhorse; 2.Sea Star, Bumps and David

JADE WINS ADMIRAL'S CUP:
Barry Campbell's Pearson 30, Jade, sailing for York
River Yacht Club, won the 2006 Admiral's Cup. This was the tri-fecta for
Jade; now she has won three of the 10 Admiral's Cup titles.
Finishing 2nd in the non-spinnaker fleet behind Jade, was Bill
Strauss' Excalibur. In the combined PHRF A/B/C
spinnaker fleet Mike Austin, Movin' On, took 1st
and Chuck Eldred, Gail Force, finished
2nd. Seaford Yacht Club and York River Yacht Club team up each year
to bring the Admiral's Cup Regatta to the York River area racers.
OLD, BUT STILL GOOD: Phil Briggs
and Ron Lewis won their divisions in the annual
Tom Brady Master's Race Saturday and Ron Lewis was
overall winner in his pale blue O'Day 27, Incentive. Ten
boats filled with seasoned citizen sailors (55 years or older) sailed the 12
mile course. The race honors its founder, Tom Brady, a long time and long
treasured member of the Hampton Roads racing community.
Malcolm Brady, Tom's son, and Malcolm's wife,
Kathy, have kept the event going in Tom's memory.
RESULTS: Division I - 1.Feather, J36, Phil
Briggs; 2.Mirage, Hobie 33, Christian
Schaumloffel; 3.Treaty of Ghent, Hobie 33, Jim
Williams. Division 2 - 1.Incentive, O'Day 27,
Ron Lewis; 2.Whisper, Hunter 40, Larry
Bryant; 3.Spray, Olson 25, Bumps
Eberwine.
Race Chairmen: Malcolm and Kathy Brady
The winner of the non-spinnaker fleet in Sunday's CCV Founders
Race, Harry Tenney with his Roberts 43,
Margarita, is hardly a newcomer to the southern Bay
racing scene. In the late 1980's, Margarita tore up the non-spin
fleet on a regular basis. Good to see Harry and his boat back on the
course.
TYLER MOORE and JESSE FALSONE 4th at the 505
WORLDS. Tyler and Jesse finished 4th overall among 113
competitors at the 505 Worlds sailed weekend before this past at Hayling Island
Sailing Club in the UK. That's
in the W-O-R-L-D ! And, that was after having to
eat , as a throw-out, a DNF/114 finish in the 2nd race.
(1-[114/dnf]-16-3-6-7-9) Congrats to both.
Lydia Cuker has been named as coach of the
Maury High School (Norfolk) sailing team. Lydia's dad is southern bay
racer, Ben Cuker, skipper of Callinectes.
SBRNYCU "WHODAT"? MHS,
of course, is named for Matthew Fontaine Maury, a
southern Bay homie born in Fredericksburg, VA, in 1806. He is best known
for his contributions in the fields of navigation and meteorology. He
also procured ships for the Confederate Navy and was a member of the
faculty of Virginia Military Institute.
Two Governor's Cup class winners continued their winning ways
at the FBYC 67th Annual Regatta. Randy Stokes,
sailing his Hampton One Design, and Len Guenther,
sailing his Mobjack, each won his class both weekends.
Talk about being on a roll!
Shine on, shine on

modified lyrics of a well known oldie]

Jack Zanks brought sail #10 home, proving once again that
"...there is no substitute for experience."

MURPHY'S LAW:
Macaroni
Mate: Back in the day, as in the late 18th century [and
beyond], English travelers, in order to avoid capture by the French or
impressment at sea by the British, often signed on American merchant
vessels as a "mate", even though they did not have the
required qualifications and received no pay. Think about it - could
these sailors have been the forerunners of today's "rail meat"? Should the
term be changed to "macaroni meat" or "pasta
pals"?
/S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us
all.
