US!
Pick a regatta and go
racing!
12TH ANNUAL STINGRAY POINT
REGATTA, Saturday and Sunday, September 2 -
3. Entry deadline is 1800,
Wednesday, August 30 for the CBYRA sanctioned racing for PHRF,
MORC, and, if sufficient interest, one-design. Contact: Event
Chairman Allan Heyward at (804) 690-1070 Hosted by Fishing Bay
Yacht Club. Full weekend of racing and socializing and leaves Monday for
the delivery home. This is a favorite holiday event for racing
fanatics. The Potts (team) Trophy will be presented as well as individual
trophies.
DINK VAIL REGATTA , Saturday, September
2. CBYRA sanctioned race for PHRF classes
as well as a non-sanctioned Cruising
class. Contact Event Chairman J.D.
Scott at (757) 572-6830 or PRO John McCarthy at (757) 850-4225.
Hosted by Norfolk Yacht and Country Club. Terrific bang for your buck, a
terrific post-race soiree, and great for holiday "family time considerations",
since the racing only takes one day of the holiday weekend. The
first warning is set for 1100 and the post-race party keg gets tapped at 1700.
Dinner begins at 1800. This is a great opportunity to enjoy racing while paying
tribute to one of the Bay's best racers of the past, Dink Vail. Get
registered and get racing!
The King of Cape Charles is THE
HUNTER, winner of the 2006 CAPE CHARLES CUP, sponsored by
Broad Bay Sailing Association. Justin Morris and his family, wife
Elizabeth, daughter Stephanie, and son Brandon sailed their 18
year old Hunter 26.5 into the winner's circle. The Hunter
had the lowest elapsed (corrected) time for the two race event and thereby
won the 2006 Cape Charles Cup. The Morrises raced in the PHRF C spinnaker
class. The fleet of 56 boats enjoyed fair winds both days, except that
each day just before the finish someone turned off the wind machine. As
expected the post-race parties on Saturday at Bay Creek Marina (Cape
Charles) and on Sunday at Bay Point Marina (Norfolk) were A+.
RESULTS: PHRF A (4 boats): Rafiki (1-2), Jan
Brandt; Treaty of Ghent (3-1) Jim Williams
and Will Roberts. PHRF B (4 boats): Charis
(1-1), Ryan McCrillis; Graceful (2-2),
Rob Beck. PHRF C (8 boats): The
Hunter (3-2), Justin Morris; Bow Movement
(1-6), Martin Casey; Callinectes (6-1),
Ben Cuker. PHRF Non-Spin (20 boats):
Black Widow (2-2), Leo Wardrup;
Margarita (3-3), Harry Tenney; Puff
Card (5-1), Walter Boatwright; Wiki
Wiki (1-9), Rodney Paice; Restless
((4-6), Sonny Smith. Cruising (20 boats):
Mariah (5-1), Doug Rose; Scoundrel
(2-4), Cliff Porter; Thrillseeker (3-3),
Andy Shanks; Life is Good (1-6), Sergio
Diehl; Gregarious (7-2), Greg
Peterman. PRO: Bill Mellen.
Mike Veraldi and the Quicky team
will be racing in Annapolis in the J24 one design fleet at CBYRA-Annapolis Race
Week during the Labor Day Weekend.
You Can So Go Home Again! And,
Pat Patterson's, Taylor 41, Orion is proving it.
Pat says Orion's former owner has bought her back and will
now bring her back to her original home, Marblehead, Massachusetts.
Dink Vail sailing stories abound. An
SBRNYCU Reliable Source tells one involving a "delivery" from Norfolk
to Hampton to race. It seems Jack, Dink's older brother, was driving and
hit an immovable (underwater) object. Dink who had been standing on
the side in a harness, was thrown around the forestay and against the other side
of the sail. And, that is only the beginning of the story. Surely
the rest of the tale will be made public at the DINK VAIL REGATTA post-race
party on Saturday.
Please be patient - CBYRA is working at a major problem
with listing some of the race results on the website. A
number of people are working at a solution. So, hold your horses, hang in
there, and in the meantime, check for results locally, i.e. the club sponsoring
the race, or, of course on Monday, your Southern Bay Racing News You Can
Use.
Bob Rock, currently skipper of Shamrock, J105,
expects to see a very special old friend at this coming weekend at the
STINGRAY POINT REGATTA. Turbo's Tub, the Morgan
35 currently owned by M.D. Riley, at one point belonged to Bob
Rock. Bob said that Bumps Eberwine, Sea Star,
owned and skippered the Morgan before he had her. Oh, the stories this boat
could tell!
Remember to use the PORTS system provided by NOAA
at no charge. You can dial (866)
247-6787 and get real time wind and tide/water level
info. There are many meteorological stations around the southern Bay and,
CBYRA vice president for Region 4, Tom Roberts, says word
is that there will be a station added at Stingray Point next year.
LASER LOVERS: The weekend
after Labor Day (Sept 9-10) is the 25th ANNUAL CHESAPEAKE BAY LASER
MASTERS CHAMPIONSHIP at Fishing Bay Yacht Club (Deltaville, Virginia).
Laser Master and Chef Supreme Alain Vincey will prepare a
delightful repast that has been described as "the best Yacht Club food in
the Nation." For details and entry info, contact Jon Deutsch at
(804) 305-1244.
Bluewater Racers: The next Newport Bermuda Race has
picked a date and has begun planning. Mark your calendar - June
20, 2008.
Broad Bay Sailing Association seems to have a Vise -Grip@ on the Mobjack
National Championship. The 2005 national champion team was
BBSA's Trey Smith and Jordan Winteringham and, in
this year, also from BBSA, Mark Arnold and crew Matt
Frank are the 2006 Mobjack National Champions. The number
one team had one 2nd and won all the rest of the races. The regatta
was hosted at the new Lewes Yacht Club (Delaware) clubhouse near
the mouth of the Delaware Bay. Arnold and Frank sailed out of Broad Bay
Sailing Association (Virginia Beach). Other southern Bay sailors who
finished well were Len and Josh Guenther, who finished
third, and Meg and Tom Roberts, who finished 4th out of
17 competitors. Both the Guenther and Roberts teams sail out of Fishing
Bay YC.
Race for the Hanbury Cup or the Executive Cup the
weekend AFTER Labor Day: Saturday, September 9 - THE
EXECUTIVE CUP REGATTA - sponsored by the Christopher Newport Sailing
Foundation, proceeds go to the CNU sailing team. Hampton Yacht
Club hosts the event. Open to all PHRF fleets and a non-spinnaker Cruising
Class. Entry fee is $35, due no later than Thursday, Sept 7.
For information and to enter contact Jim White at (757)
249-8758 or PRO Dick Boykin at (757) 890-0093. This race
coincides with the Hampton Bay Days Festival.

MURPHY'S LAW: Labor
Day is this coming Monday. Anyone caught "laboring", as opposed
to sailing, on this national holiday will be keel-hauled from an Opti and forced
to eat weevil-ly biscuits... and NO GROG for 24 hours!
/S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us
all.
NOTE: SBRNYCU issue #312
will publish, Tuesday, September 5,
2006.
