# 313 SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE
Monday September 11, 2006 02:36PM
onSeptember 11, 2001 - Five years ago today we were in
shock. The unthinkable had happened. Our national grief was
overwhelming. Life as we knew it changed. And, yet, we
sail on.

USA 90 wins J30 fleet at Annapolis Race
Week. Dave McConaughy and his
southern Bay crew, which included sailmaker Kenny Saylor,
traveled to Annapolis and brought home the first place trophy for the J30
one-design fleet of 11 competitors. USA 90 took
top honors by a hair, finishing 3rd and 1st in the two races to beat 2nd
place Bebop (2-3) by one point.
Kudos!
MIRAGE wins Hanbury Cup and WIKI
WIKI the Executive Cup: Christian Schaumloffel's Hobie
33 had the fastest corrected time among all boats in the spinnaker fleets
Saturday and laid claim to the Christopher Newport Sailing Foundation's Euclid
Hanbury Cup. Mirage completed the 7.38 mile long course in 2
hours, 26 minutes and 38 seconds. Conditions were the dreaded "light and
variable" for most of the race and current figured in the win in a big
way. Among the non-spinnaker boats, Rodney Paice's
Pearson 26 Wiki-Wiki had the fastest corrected time (2:54:01) over
the 5.9 mile course. Jim White, event chairman and
assistant coach of the Christopher Newport University Sailing team,
breathed new life into the Executive Cup Race this year as witnessed by 26
competitors, all PHRF certified, except for one lone cruiser, Dave
Arnold's Fair Winds. RESULTS: PHRF A - 1.
Mirage, Christian Schaumloffel; 2. Feather,
Phil Briggs; 3.Gremlyn, Greg
Cutter. PHRF B - 1. Bad Habit, Bob
Archer; 2.Virginia H, Andy Armstrong;
3.PF Flyer, Larry Preddy. PHRF C -
1.Roswell, Bill and Brandon Drinkwater;
2.Midmorning Buzz, Dave Taylor;
3.Callinectes, Ben Cuker. PHRF Non-Spin -

NEPTUNE'S ATLANTIC RACE - September 30,
2006. $$$$ Save $25 - Get your entry for the 2006
Neptune's Atlantic Race postmarked by TOMORROW, Tuesday, September
12th. This is the race sponsored by BBSA that starts at Little
Creek, goes around Cape Henry into the Ocean, and finishes off Virginia
Beach in front of the Old Coast Guard Station at 24th Street. It is a
CBYRA sanctioned race and invites all PHRF classes. It also provides a start for
a cruising class. For information contact Mike Nestor at (757)
696-0070. And, plan to attend the MANDATORY SKIPPERS MEETING on
Friday, September 29th.
ROSWELL, a Kirby 25 with its
own local legend, scooted around the Executive Cup Race course
Saturday and took top honors in her fleet (PHRF C). The boat
was double-handed by the father-son team of Bill and Brandon
Drinkwater, the dynamic duo of the day!
During the drifty moments in Hampton Roads Saturday, racers
were treated, most said subjected, to what was described as blaring, heavy
metal, Scandinavian rock music. Several skippers and crew thought the
auditory disruption was coming from Dave Bouchard's
Ganar! "No way," said the Ganar crew, "that was coming
off that anchored freighter." That's their story, and they're
sticking to it.
Look for a couple of Hampton One Design
boats to be included in a display at the Virginia Beach Convention Center (at
the end of the VA Beach-Norfolk "stressway") on September 25 (open to
public 6-8:30 pm). Kathy Wheeler is behind
organizing this spot-light opportunity for the HOD fleet.
Claude Nix and Kevin Baum have taken delivery
on a brand new Nacra Infusion. They will be going to the F-18 North
American Championships on September 15th at Lake Carlyle,
IL. Cross your fingers and toes for Kevin and Claude; they'll be going up
against at least 44 other teams which include several former
champions.
Tri-Services Regatta: Jake Brodersen,
Midnight Mistress, takes 1st overall. 14
spinnaker boats and 44 cruising class boats moved slowly around the
course in drifty conditions Saturday, but had a great time at the annual
gathering of the members of the military services yacht clubs and sailing
associations in Hampton Roads. Sailors from Langley AFB, Norfolk
Naval Base, and Old Point Comfort / Fort Monroe raced for their home
clubs. Old Point Comfort YC won the team competition and draws within one
title of matching Langley in number of regattas won. RESULTS:
Racing Fleet: 1.Midnight Mistress, Jake
Brodersen; 2.Excelsior, Steve Ritz;
3.Pelican, Dave Nichol. Cruising Class
1: 1. Ellen B, Richard
Beaver; 2.Ali-Ru, John Lones;
3.Inspiration, Dennis Cruff. Cruising

Clifford Obara. Cruising Class 3:

Gumpwright. Cruising Class 4: 1.Second Wind,

Armstrong; 3.Graduation, Bob Killebrew.
