onHere's something special that fits lots of racers and their
boats - cruisers too! 2006 HOSPICE TURKEY SHOOT REGATTA - October
6-8. Hosted by Yankee Point Marina on the Rappahannock
River. The regatta is open to boats made of wood and to boats of a
design that is 25 years or older - that includes Catalinas, J-24s, Flying
Scots and others. The socializing begins Friday and includes a happy
hour, music and intense "sailor gathering". Saturday's race is on a
triangle course and Sunday's race is a pursuit race (slowest boats start
first). The overall winner of the regatta represents the Turkey Shoot in
Annapolis at the National Hospice Alliance Championship Regatta in the
spring. There is a spectator boat on Sunday and Tom Neale gives
a salty presentation on the race. The spectators vote to select
the most beautiful boat to receive the Miss Ann's Choice Trophy. Last
year "most beautiful" was a 41 foot Hinckley Owens (1953),
Desparado, owned by Ric Bauer. For details and to enter, go
to the event website at www.hospiceturkeyshootregatta.com
KAHUNA Takes 2 Firsts in CCV Fall Series
Opener. It's true - late September and October are really grand
times to race in the southern Chesapeake Bay. 40 boats proved
it yesterday by tooling around Hampton Roads in the opening day of the CCV Fall
Series. Sanford Richardson's Kahuna found the
conditions, 10-14 knots, entirely to her liking as she corrected to first place
in both races. RESULTS: PHRF A - 1.Sanford
Richardson, Kahuna (1-1); 2.Sledd Shelhorse,
Meridian (3-2); 3.Lloyd Griffin, Cash Flow
(2-3). PHRF B - 1.Rusty Burshell, Cool
Change (2-1); 2.Larry Preddy, PF Flyer (3-2);
3.Dave McConaughy, White Boat (1-5). PHRF
C - 1.Ben Cuker, Callinectes
(2-1); 2.Alan Bomar, roundabout (1-2); 3.Louie
Lewis, Incentive (4-3). PHRF Non-Spin -
1.Tom Peddy, Impulse (2-2); 2.Jake
Brodersen, Midnight Mistress (4-1); 3.Rodney
Paice, Wiki-Wiki (1-4). PRO-John McCarthy; Official
Timer/Scorer- Dick Boykin; Mark Boat - Bill Gibbings.
Remember: CCV Fall Series #3 and #4 on September

WHEELER WINS SERIO. Mark Wheeler sailed
away for the other 6 Hampton One Designs competing in the annual Pappy
Serio Regatta on Saturday. Mark recorded finishes of 1-2-1-[3]-1-1.
Eddie Wolcott (2-3-2-[5]-2-4) was second, and Randy Stokes
(5-1-4-1-3-[8/dns]) finished 3rd. Cloudy day, put nice racing breeze
in Hampton Roads. PRO was Kathy Brady.
Word is the Voodoo Chile
skippers are looking for an even bigger Tripp. Leroi
Lissenden says he and Bob are hot to expand [LOA] by getting in a
longer racer, but he's a one boat at a time man. Any takers on Voodoo
Chile?
Pam Burdett's Psycho
Tiller (Swiss Esse 850) was ready to bust out of the box
early last week - after being offloaded in Norfolk,
the [shipping] box itself cleared customs on Wednesday (9-13-06,
1430). That means that on Thursday the box was opened and the boat allowed
out. Pam and her team spent the days between then and Sunday getting
Psycho Tiller ready to race in the CCV Fall Series opening day.
PT officially dunked Saturday afternoon. PT is the
6th asymmetrical chute / sprit boat to join the southern
Bay's PHRF A fleet. (Meridian, Kahuna, Gremlyn, Flying Colors, and
Liberty).
Be on the lookout for King Neptune to step
into the spotlight weekend after next. On Saturday, September 30,
Broad Bay Sailing Association (BBSA) will sponsor, in coordination with the
Virginia Beach Neptune Festival, the 2006 NEPTUNE'S ATLANTIC
RACE. This is a CBYRA sanctioned event and is open to all PHRF
classes as well as cruising class boats. There is a mandatory skippers
meeting Friday night, September 29th, 1930, at The Raven at 12th and Atlantic,
VAB. This is a staggered start (pursuit) race. The
course begins just north of the entrance to Little Creek, passes
around Cape Henry, and finishes off the Virginia Beach oceanfront at 24th street
in front of the OLD COAST GUARD STATION. Goodies include a gift bag,
party wristbands, T-shirts, event flags, and sundry other "stuff". The
post-race awards ceremony, food, drink, and trophies, will be held at the OLD
COAST GUARD STATION. For additional details call Scott Almond at
(757) 471-2663, or Mike Nestor at (757) 696-0070, or check the website at
www.broadbaysailing.org.
Deadline for entries and fees is September 26 at
1700.
Lots of us started out on a Sunfish@, but
Brandon Drinkwater has done it one better. Saturday
he traveled to Elizabeth City to race in a dinghy regatta. Brandon climbed
on a Sunfish and took a 7th in the first race. Then, having gotten the
hang of it (again), he took two first places to win the
fleet.
NOAA Chartlets: From our CBYRA
vice president for Region 4, Tom Roberts, comes word
that NOAA has started publishing Booklet Charts for small boat (as opposed to
big ship) sailors. The great news is they have started the project with
the Chesapeake Bay! And, they are free at the website. Go to
http://www.nauticalcharts.gov/bookletcharts/
and git ya whatever ya need. There are notes from the Pilots Guide
too.
Chuck Monsees and crew have hitched
Rockette to the Big Yellow Truck and are heading for the J29 North
Americans in Oxford, Maryland. Also, heading for Oxford for the
regatta is John McCarthy; he'll be doing race committee duty. Tred Avon
Yacht Club is hosting the event this coming weekend.
COMING UP SOON: Columbus discovered America
in October - sailing worked for him. You go sailing
too!

MURPHY'S LAW: Did you know
that it was not until July 31, 1970, that the daily issue of rum to sailors in
the British Navy was stopped? And you see what happens when you let the Big
Honchos muck about in the day-to-day details. It was the Admirals who
stopped the British seamen's daily tot of rum in 1970, and the Empire has not
been the same since. Don't even think
about messin' with this seadog's grog! /S/
Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
