onCCV HIGH POINT CHAMPIONS: SEA STAR, COOL
CHANGE, CALLINECTES, and MIDNIGHT MISTRESS top of their
fleets. Championship titles were awarded Saturday night at the
annual CCV Awards Presentation Party in Hampton at the downtown Radisson
Hotel. Win, place, and show trophies went to each PHRF Fleet in the 15
race CCV Racing season long program. The points totals were close in
A and C Fleet, while the winners walked away with B and Non-Spin
titles. FINAL CCV HIGH POINT AWARDS WINNERS: PHRF

FROSTBITE RACING WASHED AWAY! What
would have been the third of the HYC Frostbite Series races was washed
clean away by a howling front that dumped buckets of rain, registered
wind close to 30 knots, and turned summer-like temperatures to
winter. Race Chairman Dick Boykin met no opposition when he flew
the abandonment flag in the HYC lounge. Another try - next Sunday, same
time and place. Call Dick Boykin for info - (757) 890-0093.
Additional CCV Annual Awards: The
CCV Sportsmanship Award went to Justin Morris, The
Hunter. Justin and Elizabeth's Hunter 26.5 sailed for the first time
in the spinnaker fleet (PHRF C), and usually had a crew that
included son Brandon and daughter Stephanie. The Hunter team
finished 5th overall for the season. The CCV Commodore's
Award went to John McCarthy. He was commended for his
untiring efforts on behalf of racing, and particularly the racers, on the
southern Chesapeake Bay. The CCV Race Committee Award went to the
core of the group of individuals who ran all 15 CCV races this
season: John and Lin McCarthy, Dick Boykin, Buk Lawrence, and Bill
Gibbings.
HYC FALL FLING REGATTA: The Fall Fling
small boat racers had a great Saturday, but no Sunday. The same front
that washed the big boats out of their Frostbite, sent the dinghies back home
too. The 11 boat 505 fleet, the six boat Lightning fleet, and the combined
fleet of collegiate and high school racers in FJs (7) and 420s
(3) got in 4 races in great conditions on Saturday.
RESULTS: (skipper/crew) 5o5 : 1.
Tyler Moore / Sol Marini; 2. Jesse Falsone / Thomas
Loutrel, 3. Henry Amthor / Doug Amthor.
Lightning: 1. Patrick Phelan / Debrincat Sanford;
2. Nabeel Absalam / Kugler Roberts; 3. Joe Buczowski /
Lamb Parker. FJ/420 combined: 1. Mike Komar
/ John Shockey; 2. Patrick O'Brien / Jillian
Martin; 3. Tom Lewin / Christabelle Fernandez.
Race Chairmen: Malcolm and Kathy Brady.
Yesterday's mini-cane did not deter The Band of
Prevail-ers from Norfolk Yacht. They made it out to the
starting area off the Navy piers before the race was called. The same
thing happened to them in Frostbite #1, which was blown out instead of
washed out. Momma Nature is going to learn she cannot mess with
these guys.
Fishing isn't all that's happening on that
pier! If you want a place a little different for a
special gathering, think outside the box. Carey and Jill,
nee Shirtz, Hardesty had their stateside wedding reception at
Harrison's Fishing Pier in Ocean View. You cannot get a lot closer to the
Chesapeake Bay unless in a boat or inner tube. Carey and Jill had tied the
official knot in October in the USVI. Cary skippers Lona, an
Ericsen 25, in the PHRF C fleet.
Murphy's ScoopDog of the Week: Tom
Fowler reports that he and Jane saw the Reichel/Pugh designed
zoomie, Titan XII, at Ocean Marine
(Portsmouth) Saturday. She won all sorts of big events in 2005.
A website says she is for sale. Could be time to break the piggy bank. It
better be a kingsize piggy, though.
Rodney Paice, who frequently tore up
the PHRF Non-Spin fleet in his Pearson 26, Wiki Wiki, has
registered another first place. He will be top dog at Portsmouth Boat
Club for the coming year. As a PBC member put it, Rodney is PBC
"Commodorus Electus." Rodney is not the only active racer moving into
commodore shoes. Other "Commodori Electi": Scott
Almond will take the helm at Broad Bay Sailing Association,
Allan Heyward will lead Fishing Bay Yacht Club, and
Rusty Burshell will be commodore of Hampton Yacht
Club.
The food and the music got especially good
marks from a "random poll" (bet you wished you'd never hear those words again)
of attendees at the CCV Awards gathering. Kudos to two
people who put a tremendous amount of effort into setting up the event,
Karl and Senta Petersen, and
to Jake Brodersen who arranged for the music.
GREMLYN Takes 2nd in Elliott 770
NAs: Greg Cutter, Jason Williams, John Kren, Cody Prewitt
along with a Lake Lanier (GA) local, Jim Neukum, took 2nd
place with a string of finishes of 3-2-2-2-2-2-2 weekend
before this past . Greg said the windshifts were wicked, he claims 30
degree swings, but our guys acquitted themselves well, especially since
among the competitors, they have the least amount of time (one season) in
the boat.
2007 CCV Officials are named:
President - David Taylor; Vice-Commodore - Tom Peddy;
Secretary-Treasurer - Jim Williams. Board of Directors:
John McCarthy, Christian Schaumloffel, Neal Garrett, Ben Cuker, Huey Fourquet,
Pam Burdett, Jake Brodersen.
MURPHY'S LAW: Party Report
from The Party Animal: G-R-E-A-T! I danced off both pairs
of my high heel sneakers, and I have no idea what happened to my wig hat!
/S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us
all.
