onTHANKSGIVING is this Thursday, so... take a

Planning for the CBYRA Region 4 Awards

Region 4, Tom Roberts, says the soiree will be held at
Fishing Bay Yacht Club in Deltaville, on Saturday, February 3,
2007. Region 4 PHRF and One Design and Junior High Point
Awards won by Region 4 sailors will be presented.
FEATHER FLIES AWAY: Phil Briggs'
J36, Feather, solved the fluky wind shifts and breezed
home in less than an hour and a half over the 7.74 mile

Pirate Edward Teach, aka Blackbeard, lost his head 288
years ago come this Wednesday. Lt. Robert Maynard found the
treacherous Teach in Beaufort Inlet, NC, on November 22, 1718. The
pirate lost his head in that encounter. Maynard brought the head home to
Hampton. Legend has it that, as a warning to other "bad
boys", the head was posted on a pike at the entrance to
Hampton River ...about where the finish line for the Frostbite-ers
is.
It's not too soon to think GABOON...the Gaboon Race,
that is. This is a southern Bay favorite, the "racing crazies' "
last fling of 2006. SUNDAY - DECEMBER 3.
Staggered start, so first to finish wins. The race is not
sanctioned and PHRF crew limits do not apply, although PHRF certificates are
required. Open to all. Sponsored by Hampton Yacht Club. Individual
starting times will be available at registration on race day at HYC.
For details on requirements and entry fees contact Phil Briggs at (757)
244-5477.
The J/24s are coming! The 2009 J/24 World
Championship will be held in Annapolis, MD. The proposal
was prepared by Annapolis Fleet 6 and accepted at the 2006 J/24 World
Council Meeting. Alan Bomar, head honcho of southern Bay
Fleet 71, reminds everyone that Southern Bay Race Week (Black Seal Cup) already
is one leg of the District 6 Championship, and... it could one year have a
World qualifying berth attached to it. 2007 is the beginning of
"get ready" time. It would be very good to see some southern Bay J24s
at the Worlds in '09. (Consideration is being given to an early May date
in 2009.)
Derby Anderson, a southern Bay expatriate who
now makes her home in Annapolis and attends Georgetown University, has
been named honorable mention on the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association's
first ever ( in it's 80 year history) All-Academic Sailing Team.
And, Georgetown, in the most recent Sailing World poll, is
ranked 3rd in the nation (coed).
Winter Reminder - Even though it's the
southern Bay, the water is cold. Dress appropriately, employ
proper safety gear, and check to be sure your insurance policy covers wintertime
sailing.
Hey, Santa! Instead of sugar
plums, racers often have visions of race boats dancing in their top
knots. Butch Patterson wants, really, really wants and
needs, Santa, a Santana 30/30. Karl Petersen, CCV Board
member and annual party-maker, is on the very verge of taking delivery of
a 2000 Dehler 39. If all goes well, Karl will bring the boat down from
Hingham (Boston area) in April. And, there are rumors
afoot in Fishing Bay that a "certain skipper and crew" will be
moving up to a popular asymmetrical boat in 2007. Dreams are good
things - especially where boats are concerned.
Here's something you probably do NOT need for
your race boat. Out there in buy-it-for-the-boat land is a sleep
system that consists of "...highly flexible plastic springs that fit
easily under your boat's cushions." Cushions? What
cushions?!
Remember Jud Smith? He's "The
Etchells Guy" who was so kind as to stop by Hampton months ago to talk
with area sailors about one-design racing and about Etchells. Well, this
morning he holds the lead at the Etchells Worlds (Fremantle, Australia).
Jud is 1-2-1 in the first 3 of 8 races.
MURPHY'S
LAW: Thanksgiving is this
week. Yrs Truly, the Murphster,
is especially thankful that our sport is so forgiving. In
sailboat racing, if at first you don't succeed, you try again - unlike in
skydiving! /S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle,
the sailing spirit in us all.
