onPHRF of Chesapeake Grants and Financial Support -
$$$ - PHRF has established a Foundation (PHRFF) to distribute funds
to "provide (1) financial support to amateur sailing; (2) provide
grants to maritime-related charitable and educational organizations; and, (3)
provide scholarships to underprivileged youths to participate in PHRF Member
Yacht Club's junior sailing program." Randy Pugh, president of PHRF, will
take applications from the southern Bay quarterly for amateur/junior
sailing award/grants and annually for maritime-related charitable and
educational organizations. Please go to the PHRF website for
specific deadlines and procedures. The first deadline is March 15,
2007. http://www.phrfchesbay.com
GO GABOON! This Sunday, December 3, 2006.
This is the original "grab up the babies and bring the old ladies" end
of the season race. It's where significant others finally
get to come on a race, neighbors who wonder where you disappear to every weekend
find out, and you let the family youngster "do the bow". It's a staggered
start race - starting times are posted at the registration table in the HYC
lounge the day of the race. All entries must be received no later than
1230 race day. The racing begins at 1255. It's a non-sanctioned
affair, BUT valid PHRF Rating Certificate (or provisional rating issued by PHRF
of the Chesapeake) is required. PHRF crew limitations do not
apply. There will be class awards. And, the first to finish gets
the coveted GABOON SPITTOON TROPHY (presented at the HYC Dec 5, awards
soiree). Get out your warmies and call up your skipper, crew and
friends. You're gonna have a goood time! For info contact Phil
Briggs at (757) 244-5477.
Finally, an absolutely perfect day for the final
Frostbite Series race: There were ties for the first or second
place in 3 of the 4 fleets. However, in PHRF C the leader dominated
his competition. Chris Johnson and the Blue Bus
crew took a bullet in each of the three Series races.
Ben Cuker, Callinectes (2-2-4) was 2nd overall, and
Dave Taylor, Midmorning Buzz, 3rd with DNC/7-3-2.
In PHRF A Phil Briggs' performances in the
first two races (1-1) carried him to first overall, even though the
Feather team turned in a 5th yesterday. Mirage,
Christian Schaumloffel, had finishes of 2-2-3 to take second
overall. Cyrano, Bob Mosby, finished third with
12 points, 3-3-6. In PHRF B, Bob Archer and
Chris Beahr, Bad Habit (1-4-4) relied on their first
in Race 1 to break the tie with Larry Preddy's PF
Flyer (4-3-2) for second place. Rusty Burshell's
Cool Change won the fleet with a string of 2-2-3. In the PHRF
Non-Spin fleet, Treaty of Ghent, Jim Williams and Will
Roberts, almost swept their competition, finishing first overall with
2-1-1. Dave Lively, in his Lively Lady, took
second (7-2-2), and Roger Worthen, brought his "new " baby,
Sanctuary, in third (5-3-3), losing the tie breaker to Lively
Lady. PRO for the series was Dick Boykin.
Pirate People Know Their Blackbeard:
You are absolutely correct, Dear Readers. Blackbeard lost his
head at Ocracoke Inlet , not Beaufort as erroneously reported last
week. Blackbeard, being a natural "hothead" - that candle
thing in the beard and all - probably lost his head, so to speak, many,
many times, but the last and most significant occurrence was indeed at
Ocracoke Inlet. Thanks to all who picked up the geographical
snafu.
An ill wind, specifically the nor'easter last
week, blew plenty of ill at Tom Edward's J/24,
Fins. She broke her mooring and ended up "attacking" the
Portsmouth Seawall. J24 Fleet 71 gave some guidance and
loaned a trailer and the boat was plucked from the water by
Fink's Towing. She now sits in Tom's yard, and he expects
it will take him 'til the end of next summer to have her ready to sail.
The Velux 5 Oceans Race is underway and the
singlehanders are passing through the Southern Ocean now. You can follow
these bluewater bravehearts by going on line at http://www.velux5oceans.com
One boat has been abandoned and the skipper, Alex Thomson, rescued by a
fellow competitor, Mike Golding. Then, Golding's mast
broke. The race stops in Norfolk in April 2007.
Make plans to see the boats and meet the skippers while they are here in our
backyard.
MURPHY'S
LAW: Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, Yrs
Truly, The Murphster, did not wake up with cotton-mouth or
blanket-breath; it was feather-face... from eatin' all that turkey.
/S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us
all.
