onPHRF of the Chesapeake expects to mail out
valid rating renewals the first week in January. Best advice:
get your application for renewal back to PHRF immediately. The closer we
get to the opening of the 2007 season, the longer the process takes because of
sheer numbers of applications.
This past week, CBYRA Vice President for Region
4 (Southern Chesapeake Bay), Tom Roberts, was on hand
for the scheduling meeting for region clubs and sailing
associations. It is expected that by the end of this week, club reps from
both the North and the South Divisions of our region will have the finalized
2007 Handicap (PHRF) schedule from Region Scheduler Lin McCarthy.
DO NOT DESPAIR! Jimmie Mock, Official Keeper
of the Countdown, says it's only 122 days 'til April Fools Day,
April 1. Mid-week racing starts at most
southern Bay clubs sometime in the first two weeks of April; CCV Tune-Up
is set for April 15, with CCV Spring Series beginning on April 22.
WHITE BOAT
WINS GABOON. Dave McConaughy's J/30,
White Boat, was overall winner of the 2006 Gaboon Race

Kahuna (Sanford Richardson), but held on to win his
class and the event. Third place overall was captured by
Pam Burdett in her Esse 850, Psycho Tiller.
Twenty-eight boats raced in the 29th running of the Gaboon, a staggered
start race that begins and ends off the Hampton Yacht Club docks in Hampton
River. RESULTS: PHRF A: 1.Kahuna, Sanford
Richardson; 2.Psycho Tiller, Pam Burdett;

To Fiddler's Green: Tommy Thornton
passed away last week after a battle with cancer. He and his
wife Joyce had long been a part of the community of Portsmouth racing
sailors. He will be missed in many places by many racers on the
southern Bay.
NEW YEARS MADNESS RACE - Monday,
January 1, 2007. Put this on the calendar now, so it won't get
lost in the upcoming holiday shuffle. This is the day after New Years Eve

breakfast buffet at HYC and finish at the renown traditional New Years Day
post-race party at OPCYC. Skippers Meeting at HYC on race day at

Hey Dad, a Cal 22
that Don Beek used to sail out of Willoughby is being
gently refurbished. Don sold Hey, Dad 5 years
ago. Then he saw her in Hampton last year - she was jest
sittin'. So, Don bought her back last month and is getting her race ready
- again!
Dan Smoker, who has been dominating the
southern Bay PHRF B fleet for many years in his Nightingale
35, Smoke, returned to his race car roots last month and was inducted into
the East Coast Drag Times Hall of Fame. Dan has stacked up lots of
honors when it comes to going fast, really fast, in whatever
conveyance.
Heads-up Bluewater Racers: The 2007
Annapolis to Newport Race will have, for the first time, a Double-Handed
Class (under IRC). Decide who your very best sailing friend is and
go. Check out details at http://www.annapolisyc.org/newport07
There's a new Bay Dreamer in
John and Mary Bergman's slip at Little Creek
(Norfolk). BD2 is a Catalina
36. Mark Brzozowski (Damn Yankee) used to
own the boat and raced her out of Old Point
Comfort YC.
Something fishy - John
Hanna, previous owner and skipper of southern Bay notable
Battlewagon, continues to exercise his competitive streak.
Cap'n Hanna won the True Albacore category with a 40 lb. catch at the recent
Virginia Saltwater Fishing Tournament. "We got some
60-70 pound Tuna too," Fisher/Sailor Hanna said.
At the annual CBYRA General Meeting this past weekend
in Annapolis, Tom Roberts was re-elected Vice-President for
Region 4 and John McCarthy was elected Secretary of
the 2007 Executive Committee.
John Kenerson sent along an update on Jud Smith's win at the
Etchells Worlds which was covered by Scuttlebutt. He
said, "Jud Smith did win the Etchells Worlds in Australia by virtue of winning
the last race with authority, thus breaking a string (4) of worlds runners up #2
positions".

MURPHY'S
LAW: I'm officially announcing my availability as
crew in the new Double-Handed Division of the Annapolis to Newport
Race. Technically, my "hands" are classified as
"paws" , so I do not count against the legal crew limit. My area of
expertise is "Taster of Gruel and Grog". And, I don't clutter up
the boat with a lot of personal gear - I wear one set of foulies throughout
the race. /S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit
in us all.
BAY POINT GRILLE, "Where Friends Phlock", and
SAIL TIME Virginia Beach, the World Leader in "Fractional

Jan 10. Call Dave Wilbar (Sail Time), 757-362-3002, or Di Ricks (BPG)
