onTWO NORTH CAROLINIANS TAKE TOP SPOTS at KEY
WEST!! Pete Hunter, of Kill Devil Hill, sailing his Thompson 30,
WAIRERE, crushed his fleet and Lloyd Griffin,
of Elizabeth City, sailing his Hadley 40, CASH
FLOW, won his. Even with a DSQ in the
first race, the Wairere team came back to win the fleet by 11
points. Wairere put together a string of
9(dsq)-3-3-1-2-2-3-1-1 and, using their throw-out for the dsq, finished with 16
points. The second place boat amassed a total of 27 points.
Wairere sailed in the PHRF-1 fleet (8 boats), and Cash Flow sailed
in the 12 boat PHRF-2 fleet. Cash Flow
experienced a bit of a rocky first race, finishing 7th, but came back to win the
fleet by a 5 point margin. Over the five days of racing Cash Flow
had finishes of 7-3-2-1-2-3-1-1-2. More than 250 boats raced at 2007 Key
West Race Week .
PROMISES for 2007:
Voodoo Chile has moved on to a new home on the Great
Lakes, and Leroi Lissenden and Scott Birch, along with
Bob Krushelnisky, will be racing one of the prettiest boats on the Bay
, the Tripp 38 Promises. The green racing
machine belonged to Sledd Shelhorse, then to St. Mary's
College, then to an Annapolis owner, who sold her to Larry and Anne
Kumins. But, now she comes back to her warm and welcoming
southern Bay waters.

RULES POP QUIZ:
Situation: Two boats racing have a close crossing situation.
Neither boat protests. A third boat observes the incident and believes
there was a foul. Can the third boat protest anyone?
(Answer later in this issue)
PHRF C may look different in 2007: Wiki
Wiki, Rodney Paice's Pearson 26, tore up the
non-spinnaker fleet in 2006. Word is a spinnaker has been added to the
Wiki-Wiki arsenal, but fleet decision pends.
Bill Bounds' red-hot Andrews 27, Wham Bam, is on the
market. Bill says he and Angie are going to try "serious" cruising.
A related rumor is afloat about a certain J24 owner looking to
step up to B fleet boat - another "decision pends". And,
perhaps a stepped up racing schedule for Bumps Eberwine in his
Olsen 25, Spray - more Spray on the course would be a good
thing!
Watch your mailbox for your CCV Membership
application (renewal). Be sure to pay attention to the deadline date for
listing in the 2007 CCV Racing Guide. Skippers as
well as crew benefit from listing in the Guide. CCV membership
includes your personal copy. Distribution of the Guide is
scheduled for the annual CCV Rules Clinic on April 3, a Tuesday evening.
Watch SBRNYCU for details as they
develop.
BOAT GEAR SHOPPING HINT: Spring is when racers, a
reputedly shiftless group, are shifting boats. Usually, he or she
who is giving up a boat has "stuff" for sale. Watch for the
racers who are changing rides, google them, and chances are you can pick up some
goodies.
A number of boats familiar to southern Bay racers, made the trip to
last week's Key West Race Week. In addition to Wairere
and Cash Flow, who won their fleets, 7 were "at the end of the
road". Here's how they did: Savannah, Walter
Kennedy (Charlotte) 15th of 20 in the Melges 32 class;
Rum at Six, Worth Harris (Beaufort, NC) 9th of 33 in
the J105 class; Bone Chillin', Alan Simonini,
8th and Sweet Baby J, Robin Team, 10th of
17 in the J80 class; EZ, Paul Lockwood
(Beaufort, NC) 8th of 11 in PHRF-4; Unvanquished,
Dan Ledbetter (Charlotte) 8th of 9 in PHRF-5; Bone
Machine, Joe Corriher (Charlotte) 10th of 11 in
PHRF-6.
Velux 5 Oceans: How's this for a starting
line? Word is the schooner Virginia may be the signal boat and a
British aircraft carrier the pin when the singlehanding racers begin the final
leg of the race on April 15. And, it will all happen right in our
Hampton Roads. Finish your income taxes early and be on the water to see
'em go.
RULES QUIZ ANSWER:
Absolutely. Rule 60.1(a) says that a boat may protest another boat
for a breach of a Part 2 rule - provided that the protesting boat observed the
incident. By the way, the race committee may also protest something it
observes...so, BARGERS BEWARE!!!
MURPHY'S
LAW: Last year at a Southern Bay Race Week party, I
saw a Volvo cut off the beer truck at the entrance to the
party grounds. I should have protested the Volvo ... for delay
of fun! /S/ Murphy the Racing
Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
