33 Sailors Brave the Heat at the FBYC August Jr. Regatta
Saturday August 5, 2006 12:24PM
onThirty-three sailors from 3 lower Chesapeake Bay Sailing Clubs braved the 100-plus heat index at the Fishing Bay August Junior Regatta on Thursday August 3, 2006.
Thanks to an able crew of volunteers, Fishing Bay was able to host a very successful regatta, despite the heat and fickle breeze. Winds ranged from 0-5 knots and came from most every point on the compass during some part of the race day, putting a premium on solid race committee and mark boat work. Brooks Zerkel and his crew on the Optimist course were able to get in four races, even with multiple general recalls. With smaller fleets and an older group of sailors, 6 races were run for each fleet on the Laser/420 course.
On the Optimist course, there were 14 boats from Fishing Bay, Hampton YC and Indian Creek YCC. Fishing Bay sailors Alex Jacob, Austin Powers, Ben Buhl and Graeme Alderman, all recently returned from the Optimist Nationals in Sarasota, FL, walked away with the top 4 spots overall. Jacob, Powers and Buhl were also top three in Blue Fleet. In White Fleet, Alderman, Aidan Toms and white-fleet newcomer Eric Roos took the top three spots, followed by Alexander Hanna from Hampton YC, Ellis Hubbard from Fishing Bay and Matthenw Keane from Indian Creek YCC. Five sailors graduated from Green fleet to White Fleet at this regatta Eric and Conrad Roos, Erin Jacob, Jed Londrey, all from Fishing Bay, and DJ Batchelor from Hampton YC. Top female sailors in Optimists were Olivia Keane from Indian Creek YCC and Erin Jacob from Fishing Bay.
The seven Lasers racing created some very competitive contests among them. Four different racers won races and the scoring for second and third place was decided in the last 10 yards of the last race and still had to be decided by a tie-breaker. Finishing in first and second were Quentin Jenkins and Annie MacKinnon of Fishing Bay, followed by Michael Keane, from Indian Creek YCC. Cori Radtke, also a Fishing Bay sailor, started strong, winning the first race, and ended up in 4th overall. William Wirt, FBYC, Ian Patterson, ICYCC and Frank Hargrove, FBYC, sailing in their first Laser Junior regattas put in a good showing to finish in 5th, 6th and 7th. The top female Laser sailors were Annie MacKinnon and Cori Radtke, both of Fishing Bay.
Among the 6 420s racing the competition for second and third also went to a tie-breaker, but first was never in doubt. Chris Herring from Hampton YC and his crew Travis won every race and were also in first around every mark of the course, although they were pushed on several finishes. Winning the tie-breaker for second were skipper Nolan Wiltshire and crew Ian Gardner. Third place was taken by Anna Hogg and crew Kaitlin Kremp from Hampton YC, followed by Wesley Joseph and crew Kerry from Hampton YC. Top female honors went to Anna Hogg from Hampton, followed by Beatrice Bronner, sailing with Taylor Joe Jones, from Indian Creek YCC.
