# 335 SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE
Tuesday March 6, 2007 04:32PM
onGary Jobson will be speaking at
the University of Richmond on Friday, March 16th,
7-9pm. This is the Kick Off Event for the Southern
Chesapeake Leukemia Cup Regatta set for July 6 - 8, 2007.
Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students (Yes, college kids are
considered students!) Fishing Bay Yacht Club is sponsoring Gary's
presentation and you may make reservations on line at the FBYC website or call
Sue Willis at 800-866-4483 to make "pay at the door" ressies.
TICK - TOCK: SPRING AHEAD 1 HOUR THIS
COMING SUNDAY (March 11). DAYLIGHT SAVING (aka SAILING) TIME.
This is good news, even for sleepy-heads. SBRNYCU
AOT (Arbiter of Time), Jimmie Mock, says we've got 27 remaining
days 'til the sailboat racers National Holiday, aka April Fool's Day, and
only 40 days 'til April 14, the first weekend things begin to really
pop!
BOTTOM TIME: The weather is
warming. If you have not already done so, it is time to engage the
co-most important racing professional with whom you deal (he or she shares
top billing with your sailmaker) - the bottom pro. A boat's bottom
pro also can be a strong and willing crew who follows directions to the
letter. Get under your baby and get her ready to roll!
VELUX 5 OCEANS: Bernard Stamm, leader of the
Velux 5 Oceans and winner of Leg 2 (Fremantle to Norfolk), arrived at
Norfolk's Waterside Marina early Sunday morning. His official finish
(local) time, at a designated point off Cape Henry,
was 22:59:25, Saturday, March 3, 2007. The competitors in
the Velux 5 Oceans must determine and navigate their route - no outside "weather
routers" available to these guys. Those who were at the finish line or at the
Waterside welcome ceremony experienced a moment in the presence of a truly great
sailor. And, more solo sailors will follow in the coming days.
Watch for arrival information at www.velux5oceans.com then, click on
Norfolk Stopover for local details. Bernard Stamm's ocean racer,
Cheminees-Poujoulat, is currently "parked" at the Waterside
marina, in an el primo location for up-close viewing. Take a long lunch
(you deserve it) and give it a look.
RACERS AND THE RULES QUIZ: You are
racing. During the race you clearly see a fellow competitor miss a
mark. He is some distance away and probably cannot hear anything you hail
to him. What should you do? (answer follows in this
issue)
Early Birds in Southern Bay Race
Week: Three firsts are already signed up for 2007
SBRW. The first boat to enter is Meridian 2 (Sledd
Shelhorse), the 2006 winner and therefore defender of the Black
Seal Cup. The first J/105 has entered: the boat
is Flying Colors (Richard Payne). And, the
first "out-of-town" (i.e. out of Hampton Roads) boat to enter is
Schiehallion (Brad Miller), sailing out of Fishing
Bay. SBRW organizers award 6 free regatta drink tickets to entries
received prior to midnight, April 15.
REGATTA PARTY LINE: 2007 SCREWPILE - adds a
party and re-locates the post-race soirees. Screwpile
officials have moved the post-race parties, all of legendary status, a short
distance to a splendid location. The festivities will center at the
Holiday Inn-Select waterside courtyard - think docks, swimming pool, and cabana
bar! Now, you can float in the pool until it's time to pick up
your 1st place daily. And, on Saturday, July 21st, after the
registration and skipper's meeting (courtyard at the Holiday Inn), there will be
a party at the new Southern Maryland Sailing Association Clubhouse (just
off the main drag in "downtown" Solomons). Get your ressies and
break out your high-heel sneakers - we are gonna P-A-R-T-Y

Media Watch: A great picture in the
March SpinSheet (page 88) of the CASH FLOW team
(Lloyd Griffin, Elizabeth City, Hadley 40) at Key West Race
Week. CASH FLOW finished 1st overall in their PHRF
fleet. Awesome shirts! Also in
SpinSheet (page 90) an "on board" photo taken by crew member Brendan
Drinkwater as MERIDIAN (Sledd Shelhorse, Virginia Beach, Farr 36)
barreled down the course toward the Bolero Trophy in Lauderdale to Key
West.
Coming Back to the Southern
Bay: Juan Diaz, who sailed his Beneteau
Sur Le Vent our of Norfolk Navy Sailing Association, raced in
Tri-Services, and occasionally in the Old Point Comfort Yacht Club series, is
returning to the area, and probably to the racing circuit. Word is the
Diaz team expects to be here by June.
Special thanks go to John
Kren who kept us all posted on the expected and accelerated arrival
times of Bernard Stamm this past weekend.
John is a member of the crew on Greg Cutter's
Elliott 770, Gremlyn.
Speaking to Bluewater
Racers: There are two upcoming seminars of special
interest to those who favor distant horizons.
March 24-25: 28th annual
Safety-at-Sea Seminar hosted by the Marine Trades Association of
Maryland and the United States Academy Sailing Squadron at Alumni Hall at
the U.S.Naval Academy, Annapolis. This seminar is packed with great stuff,
including on-water demos of raft deployment and helicopter rescue, sessions on
medical emergencies and on weather systems, and more. Day 1 of the Seminar
meets US SAILING certification for off-shore racing regulations. For info
details and/or to register go to http://www.mtam.org
April 14: "Sea Safety and
Seamanship: A Primer for Bay and Coastal Sailors", presented by Shelia
McCurdy, chairman of the national faculty for US Sailing, and hosted by
Fishing Bay Yacht Club at Deltaville, Virginia. The course is open to
all and the registration fee ($35 - $60 for couples) includes lunch and the
course syllabus. This course is designed for cruisers and distance racing
sailors to help prepare them for the challenges routinely encountered in bay and
coastal cruising. NOTE: This course does not meet the requirements
for US SAILING certification for off-shore racing regulations; it is not a US
SAILING Safety-at-Sea Seminar. For info and to
register contact George Burke at (804) 359-1187.
US SAILING, the folks who, among other
things, administer our sport nationally, speak for us internationally,
offer our clubs and volunteers special insurance packages, run championships,
and....so much more, is surveying yacht club and sailing club
managers. They are gathering information about facilities, insurance,
youth programs, and banquet aspects for clubs. The intent is to analyze
the data and try to provide solutions for anticipated circumstances.
The survey is available on line to club managers at http://www.prsurvey.com/ussailing/
Schedule Heads-Up for Dinghy Racers: 43rd Annual
Virginia Governor's Cup One-Design Regatta, August 4-5, 2007.
Ware River Yacht Club (Gloucester, VA) invites all classes and says that if a
class does not make, i.e. have 5 boats, they will be "...grouped with other
such classes and race using the Portsmouth rating handicap system."
Regatta Chairman: Heath Allen (757) 871-3817 or
Registration/General Info: Rick Klein
(804)693-5629. Mark your calendar - this is a good time
regatta!
Answer to RR Quiz
Question: PROTEST! Rule 61.1(a) says you must notify
the boat you are protesting "at the first reasonable opportunity". STEP 1
= Put up your red flag immediately. STEP 2 = Hail "protest". Yes, he
probably can't hear you. Hail it anyway, so that some "sea-lawyer" can't
declare your protest invalid because you didn't hail. Know, however, that
you haven't really notified him. Do that as soon as you can, preferably
the first time your boats get close together on the course. If not
possible, do it as soon as you get ashore and definitely within the protest time
limit. Tell the RC at the finish line (if required by the S.I.) and,
finally, STEP 3 = submit a timely, written protest. Hopefully, once he
realizes he missed the mark, the competitor will retire but, if not, go to the
hearing.
March 17 - CCV Race Management
Clinic hosted by Hampton Yacht Club, Saturday, March 17, 0900 - 1200.
"You got the race started, now what are you going to
do?!" This half-day clinic is a refresher
for experienced race committee hands and a good introduction for
newcomers. US Sailing Advanced Race Officer and Instructor, John McCarthy,
will conduct the clinic. Plan to cover the essentials of race management,
in a nutshell and easy to understand. Here is the reality of managing
a race. This clinic is offered by CCV and HYC; it is FREE,
and is OPEN to ALL. Morning refreshments will be
provided. Be there at 0830 to sip and
socialize!
MURPHY'S LAW: Some say
Cheminees-Poujoulat, Bernard Stamm's, race boat performed like a
scalded dawg on his trip to Norfolk from Fremantle. Yrs
Truly, the Racing Beagle, would say otherwise. I say
she performed like the scaredy-cat pictured on her bow, who must have heard the
bark of the racing beagle. /S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle,
the sailing spirit in us all.
