onSAILBOAT RACERS NATIONAL HOLIDAY, aka APRIL FOOL'S
DAY, Sunday April 1. Do your part!
And, now there are three... VELUX 5
OCEANS racer Unai Basurko, 33, crossed the Leg 2 finish line Friday
evening and arrived at Waterside around midnight. That leaves one more
arrival prior to the re-start on April 15. Sir Robin
Knox-Johnson, 67, on SAGA INSURANCE, is expected in a
few days. However, the fifth racer still competing, Graham
Dalton, 54, aboard A Southern Man - AGD, in all
probability, will not arrive in time for the re-start for the final leg.
He could however, get to Norfolk in time to serve his penalty delay, and
perhaps, finish the event. Dalton has been much delayed repairing
equipment and then replacing "missing" equipment. For details on his
exploits go to the VELUX 5 Oceans web site.

DRAWING SAIL ART CONTEST, sponsored by
Dominion Enterprises, opened yesterday. Open to anyone 16 years old and
younger. The winning design will be recreated on a sail used by the
schooner Virginia in the June 8, Parade of Sail (Harborfest). For
contest details check the web at www.dominion
enterprises.com.
9 Days and counting down - CCV ANNUAL RACING
RULES CLINIC, Tuesday, April 3rd, 6:30 pm, at The Mariners' Museum
(Newport News, VA). The 2007 CCV RACING GUIDE will be ready for
distribution at the clinic. Dave Pyron, US Sailing
Judge and International Umpire will present the rules clinic. 2007
members of CCV may pick up their copies of the Guide at the
Clinic. Also, applications for CCV membership will be
accepted. Note: A copy of the Guide comes
with any CCV membership (Club or Racing). The Clinic is FREE and OPEN TO
ALL. Be sure to clear your decks for the evening of April 3, 2007.
Here's a goal worthy of southern Bay racers'
attention: This year the US Off-Shore Championship (Lloyd Phoenix
Trophy) will be decided at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, October
26-28. To be selected from our area to compete, it really, really
helps to have done well in our major keel boat events, i.e. Southern Bay Race
Week, Screwpile Lighthouse Regatta, and/or Annapolis Race Week, as well as other
races/regattas throughout the season. So, get out there and get to it. The
winners have to come from somewhere, and it might as well be from the southern
Chesapeake Bay!
More Velux 5 Oceans - local
flavor: Portsmouth Boat Club is hosting an "In Port" Regatta
to honor the Velux racers. The race will be held in the Elizabeth River on
Saturday, April 14. Entry is $20/$18, and must be filed no later than
April 12. For info and details contact Jonathan Romero at (757)
285-6017.

MURPHY'S LAW: What's
going on? In the NCAA Final Four they've got crazy
mascots. They've got the Buckeyes, some kind of flowery, gray barked
tree, and the Hoyas, a shrubby climbing, waxy plant. Then, there's the
swamp creatures, the Gators, and something that's not quite a real, honest to
goodness bear, the Bruins. I don't get it - where are the Beagles?
That's a mascot that will hunt!
/S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us
all.
