Monday May 14, 2007 08:03PM
onVERSUS TV COVERAGE OF THE 32ND AMERICA'S
CUP: You should check your VERSUS channel this morning -
0830. But, do not bet your ranch, and certainly not your boat, that the
coverage of the Louis Vuitton Cup will be there - intergalactic steer wrestling,
maybe. That said, however, Cox Cable has published
that LV Cup coverage will run TODAY, Monday (RACE 1), Tuesday (RACE 2),
Wednesday (Race 3), Friday (RACE 4) and Saturday (RACE 5). The times for
each day are 8:30am-11am; noon -2:30pm, and 4:30pm -
7:00pm Or, if you are internet savvy, go to the
Versus website, www.versus.com and see if you can
muck around enough to get their internet
stuff.

CAPE HENRY CUP - Saturday, May 19. CBYRA sanctioned race and
the first race in the 2007 Chesapeake Bay Distance Racing Series.
Open to all PHRF spinnaker and non-spinnaker classes. And, there is a Cruising
class for non-PHRF racers. This is a great day long race in
the southern Bay. The start area is off Buckroe Beach and the finish area
is off Fort Monroe . The main course takes racers out the Chesapeake
Channel entrance to the CBBT, rounds a mark off Lynnhaven Inlet, and returns to
Fort Monroe via the Thimble Shoal Channel opening (27.4 nm). In case
of inclement weather, race officials have an alternate course designed for
Hampton Roads Harbor. For specific details, order of mark roundings,
etc., see the NOR and Sailing Instructions. Entry fee is $25.
BBSA is the organizing authority. This is a change of pace race and
has been a southern Bay favorite for years.
NOTE: PRO Scott Almond says the Sailing Instruction is posted at the BBSA
website - www.broadbaysailing.org click
on "download" in left column, then PHRF SIs; then Cape Henry Cup
SI. OR, for info on the race, SI, and to enter,
contact Scott Almond at (757) 471-2663.
The famous BBSA Pot Luck Supper - Cape Henry Cup Awards Presentation
will be Tuesday, May 22 at the ODU Sailing Center. The race is a "change
of pace" and so is this traditional prize giving event.
There's a couple of Georgians coming to SOUTHERN BAY RACE WEEK.
Two Elliott 770 skippers, Paul Swanson (Gainesville) and
Chuck Weaver (Cumming), will be heading to Virginia to take on
Southern Bay Elliott 770 skipper Greg Cutter (Gremlyn).
The HOD Trapeze Regatta winners, Mark Wheeler and Graham
Garrenton demonstrated "bi-partisanship" in the racing world. In
big boats, Mark sails in the Meridian (Shelhorse, PHRF A) afterguard
and Graham is on the point-y end. And, they got along fine on the little
HOD.
Southern Bay Laser Racers Shine - Kevin
Shockey is 2nd and Henry Amthor takes 3rd overall in the District 11 Laser
Championship Regatta. The District 11 championship drew 57
competitors, got in 3 races on Saturday, and like a lot of events Sunday,
May 6, was blown out by gale force winds. Here's how our Laser Beams
did: 2.Kevin Shockey (ODU) - 2-3-8-;
3.Henry Amthor (HYC) - 5-12-3-; 8.John
Shockey (ODU) - 4-10-11; 16.Jon Deutsch (FBYC) -
18-11-30; 34.Alain Vincey - (FBYC) - 36-28-35.
National Hospice Regatta Alliance Championship:
Chuck Monsees (Rockette, PHRF A) and his team from the
Pamlico River Hospice Regatta made it into the championship round Sunday to
finish 9th overall (23 competitors; 12 boats in championship round). The
competitors from Hospice Regattas around the country sailed J105s in Annapolis
this past weekend. Two other teams representing southern Bay and beyond
area Hospice Regattas were Joe Waters (Turkey Shoot Regatta, Rap Riv) and Mike
Veraldi (Greater Hampton Roads).
How foggy was it? Two Wednesdays ago it was pretty
darned foggy in Hampton Roads. Drivers crossing the HRBT
claimed they could not see the water. Wednesday Night racers at Little
Creek and Hampton claim they sailed in the fog...but, nobody saw them.
However, some claim to have heard them, as one or more thumped into the
sand bars! Ripley's Believe it or Not has not yet sanctioned the
claim.
BLACKBEARD'S FIREWORKS, Saturday, June 2, will be an added
attraction for SBRW racers, friends, and families. The fireworks are part
of the grand Blackbeard Pirate Festival, which will take over downtown Hampton
during the SBRW weekend. The Festival is a brief walk from SBRW
headquarters at Hampton Yacht Club.
Anna Cobb Matchett was absent from the HOD racing
Saturday. She and husband Ben have moved (courtesy the USAF) to
Texas.
Don't forget: Rappahannock River
Spring Regatta coming this Saturday, May 19th. And,
Portsmouth Boat Club, Merrimac Memorial
Regatta, May 26, contact Fred Bilskis (757) 484-9654 or Rodney
Paice (757) 971-0202.
Bring your party shoes!
SCREWPILE 2007 party
entertainment will be first class. Two very popular bands
are coming to the post-race parties. On Sunday night,
The 25th Hour Band, known for great music and great times in
southern Maryland, Baltimore, Annapolis, northern Virginia, and beyond, will
provide the boogie tunes. Then, on Monday night, coming out of Virginia
Beach, The CalypsoNuts, take over the stage. This
group is in demand, averaging 280 shows per year. The entertainment
,coupled with the new, post-race party site at the waterside courtyard of the
headquarters hotel (Holiday Inn Select, Solomons), makes dancin' shoes almost as
important as sailing shoes. Pack 'em both... and plan to wear 'em
out! For info go to the event web site at www.screwpile.com or www.splc.us 2007 Screwpile
Lighthouse Challenge - July 22nd, 23rd, and 24th.
[Shark] Fins to the left - [Shark]
Fins to the right - Sail the Bay and the Shark
Midwinters all set for this coming weekend off of First Landing
Seashore State Park in Virginia Beach. For info contact Jean or Jerry
Pattenaude at (757) 543-3029.
MURPHY'S LAW: I sure
like the looks of this week's Louis Vuitton Cup TV racing
schedule. I see pancakes and milk bones each
morning; burgers and squirrel chips for lunch; and pizza and brewskis for
dinner. All with sailboats racing around on the big screen. My
spot on the sofa is reserved! /S/ Murphy the Racing
Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
