# 350 SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE
Monday June 18, 2007 10:37AM
onEvery day on the water is a good day. Yesterday
was a g-l-o-r-i-o-u-s day - perfect for all the dads on Dads
Day!
On this coming Sunday, June 24, more than 100
Flying Scots will begin competition for their North American
Championship at Fishing Bay Yacht Club. The Women's and
Juniors' titles will be determined on Sunday, and racing for the overall
championship will go from Monday thru Wednesday. The Flying Scot Class
celebrates the 50th Anniversary this summer.
Two Races for Good Causes in the Southern
Bay:
- YORK RIVER CUP: Mike Austin, Movin' On (Beneteau FC8) won the York River Cup and PHRF Spinnaker (A, B, C combined), but the big winner from the event stands to be the Watermen's Museum in Yorktown. More than 150 folks ended up at the post-race extravaganza, held at the Museum, and participated in the party, the raffle, and the awards dinner. As of press time, officials were "still counting" the $$$ - hear the jingle! Plans are on for "doing it again next year!" RESULTS: PHRF Spinnaker: 1.Mike Austin, Movin On, Beneteau FC8; 2.Ben Weeks, Rumble, J29; 3.Brian Gregory, Hornet, J30. PHRF Non-Spinnaker: 1.Dan Smoker, Smoke, Nightwind 35; 2.Chuck Eldred, Gail Force, Hobie 33; 3.Barry Campbell, Jade, Pearson 30. Sounds like the good folks up on the York River have got a good thing going!
- HOSPICE XIII: Christian Schaumloffel, Mirage, (Hobie 33) won the right to represent the Greater Hampton Roads area in the National Hospice Alliance Regatta Championship in Spring 2008. Christian and crew won the overall award and PHRF A in the annual [Hampton Roads] Hospice Regatta. Twenty boats filled with skippers and crew raced on a difficult day in Hampton Roads, the wind gods were not kind (very light), in support of this worthy charity. RESULTS: PHRF A: 1.Christian Schaumloffel, Mirage, Hobie 33; 2.Chuck Monsees, Rockette, J29. PHRF B. 1.Larry Preddy, PF Flyer, Pearson Flyer; 2.Dave Taylor, Wham Bam, Andrews 27. PHRF C: 1.Bumps Eberwine, Spray, Olson 25; 2.Justin Morris, The Hunter, Hunter 26.5; 3.Mike Veraldi, Quicky, J24. PHRF Non-Spin: 1.Andy Armstrong, Virginia H, Soverel 30; 2.Karl Petersen, Valkyrie, Dehler 39; 3.Jerry Lotz, Faith, Seahorse 34. Race Co-Chairmen: Malcolm and Kathy Brady.
One of the traditions racers are compelled to uphold when at
large regattas involves the creative use of duck tape to change names
on competitors' boats. For instance,
Fleet Walker, could become Street Walker, Glory
could become Gory, etc. The changes usually are of the
late-night-comedy variety, at the very least very risqué, but all in good
fun. You get the picture. At a recent southern Bay regatta three
boats were singled out by racing "friends" for "name
adjustments". A note: because email servers are so
vigilant in screening for "off color" verbiage, you must imagine (or
contact the skippers directly for), the changes. Here are the boats' real
names: Wham Bam, Juggernaut, and Cash Flow,
skippered respectively by Dave Taylor, Mike Dale, and Lloyd
Griffin, each of whom has a terrific sense of humor.
The creative artists remain unidentified.
Sailors' Best Day of the Year! JUNE 21,
this coming Thursday, is the SUMMER SOLSTICE. This is the day
with the most daylight hours, therefore, the day with the most [daylight]
sailing hours. Start your weekend early - get on out there!
Good Grief: The 20th Annual Cock Island Race is
upon us! Racers will gather Friday at Mile Marker Zero for the
notorious welcome and skippers party. The race and post-race festivities
are Saturday. The recovery begins Sunday! If you have not yet
completed your entry, contact City of Portsmouth at (757) 393-8481, or speak
with PRO Larry Bryant at (757)484-4966.
CCV Mailing Address Change: Jim Williams,
Secretary-Treasurer of CCV, passing along the new/current mailing
address for CCV. Please update the CCV address to:
Cruising Club of Virginia (CCV), 520 West 21st Street, Suite G2-186, Norfolk, VA
23517. Mail already sent to the old address (PO in Portsmouth) should be
forwarded - check with Jim ( Jim Williams, BBSA@cox.net ), if you have something
important in the postal mill.
BLUEWATER RACERS IN ROUTE FROM
MARION to BERMUDA: As we speak, 72 boats are racing from
Marion to Bermuda. Two of the A Fleet boats have southern Bay attachments
in the form of crew. Heron, Jay Pasco-Anderson's
J/160, has spent a lot of time around the Hampton Roads area the past few
months, and key man Pete Burch, is aboard. There are 3
Hampton One Design sailors on Venture, Oyster Mar/Oyster 6 owned
by Peter Savage. The HOD-ers are Latane
Montague, Stephen Kistler, and Tom
Ballantine. Brian McCauley, a southern
Bay "big boat" racer, is navigator on Venture. To

Time to get entered in the 2007 EXECUTIVE CUP:
Set to go in late afternoon (first warning at 4 pm) of
Saturday, June 30. Mandatory skippers meeting at the Air
and Space Museum (Settlers Landing Road, downtown Hampton) at 3 pm on race
day. Deadline for entries is Thursday, June 28. For info contact
Jim White, at (757) 249-8758. This is a non-sanctioned race; all PHRF
classes are invited as well as cruising fleet boats. The Christopher
Newport Sailing Foundation sponsors this event and proceeds go to the support of
the CNU Sailing Team.
Any sailmaker worth his salt will advise you
on which sails you need to make your boat go fast. But, if you
really want to know the technical side of why certain sail
configurations make certain hull shapes do certain things... here's
the seminar for you. "The Physics of Sailing", Tuesday night,
TOMORROW, June 19th, 8 pm at the Jefferson Lab.
Bryon Anderson, professor of physics at Kent State University
will discuss the physics of sailing, including hull speed limit, Bernoulli's
principle as applied to keel and sails, and vortex generation from the keel and
sails, and all kinds of other good stuff. The seminar will be held at
the CEBAF Center Auditorium, 12000 Jefferson Avenue, Newport News. Call
(757) 269-5102 for info. The seminar is FREE. Put down you
beer, put on your thinking cap, and go. Should be
interesting.
MURPHY'S LAW: The Murphster,
your Racing Beagle, is thinking the
"Physics of Sailing" lecture might be a good thing to attend. Until I
heard about the seminar, I thought Bernoulli was a real skinny pasta
noodle. See, an ole dawg can learn new tricks. /S/
Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
