FLYING SCOTS FLY HIGH IN NORTH AMERICAN
CHAMPIONSHIPS AT FISHING BAY: There were
121 Flying Scots at their NAC this past week hosted by Fishing Bay Yacht
Club. It was the largest gathering of racing Scots in the history of the
class, which coincidentally was celebrating it's 50th Anniversary.
There were plenty of "Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Moments", like seeing 60 boats on the
line for the Championship Division starts and seeing 100+ spinnakers coming
downwind toward the leeward gate. As planned, the Championship and
Challenger Divisions got in two races each day Monday thru Wednesday while the
Women and Juniors Championships were decided on Sunday. Shore-side social
soirees, annual meetings, bagpipe processions; boat and gear talk, and Scot
gatherings swirled around the racing all five days. Kudos to FBYC
for pulling out all the stops to run a first-class event for this
prestigious regatta. RESULTS: Championship Division
(60): 2007 Flying Scot North American Champion:
Jeff Linton/Amy Linton (Davis Island YC);
Challenger Division Winner (43): Mike Mittman/Greta
Mittman (Corinthian SC); North American Women Champion
(8): Greta Mittman/Heidi Gough (Corinthian SC);
Juniors North American Champion (12): Elliott Lee/Paul
Lee (Detroit YC). PRO: John McCarthy;
Event Chairman: Noel Clinard;
Southern Bay Racers Among Top Scots:
NAC Championship Division Top Ten: 6th -
Travis Weisleder/Ernie Deiball (FBYC); 8th -
Blake Kimbrough/Lud Kimbrough (FBYC). NAC
Challenger Division Top 10: 7th - Tripp Westbrook/Mike
Klopf (RRYC); 9th - Phil Webb/Jerry Desvernine
(FBYC). NAC Juniors Division Top 3: 2nd - Cori
Radtke/Art Radtke (FBYC); 3rd - Alex
Jacob/Erin Jacob/James/Jacob (FBYC).
On the final day of racing at the Flying Scot NAC regatta, as
the first starting sequence of the day was underway, a self-proclaimed
"research vessel" tried to bully the entire 100+ boat fleet out of
the sailing area. After determining that there were no deck guns
on the "research vessel", race officials called the interloper's
bluff. They warded them off by waving a fist full of CG permits
about , putting an end to the attempted hostile take over.
Flying Scot Hull #1 competed for the
first time in an FSSA North American Championship last week. The 50 year
old hull is owned by Harry Carpenter, President of Flying Scot, Inc. "Ole
Number 1" did OK for the week too - finished 21st in the 60 boat
Championship Division.
20th ANNUAL COCK ISLAND RACE: There were
87 boats racing at the 2007 Cock Island Race Saturday before last. Of the
fleet, 16 sailed in PHRF spinnaker classes, 27 in PHRF non-spinnaker classes and
44 were Cruising boats. Winds were reported as "typical Cock Island winds"
that dropped out toward the end. All in all, fun racing, great parties,
and a good thing marked a longevity milestone. RESULTS SUMMARY - FLEET

Petersen; PHRF B (3) - Faith, Jerry
Lotz; PHRF C (7) - Roswell,
Brendan Drinkwater; PHRF NS1 - (17) - Black Widow,

Bryant.
EXECUTIVE CUP for CNU: Big boat racers
and event sponsors contributed event proceeds to the Christopher Newport
University Sailing Team through the CNU Sailing Foundation.
The race itself was a change of pace in that the start time was at 4:00 PM with
an eye to taking best advantage of the sea breeze, which showed right on
time. This was a "gentle" race around established marks
in the Hampton Roads harbor. A post-race party on the third floor
balcony of the Virginia Air and Space Museum capped off the event.
RESULTS: PHRF A (3): 1.Phil Briggs, Feather;
2.Greg Cutter, Gremlyn. PHRF B (7):
1.Winner of the Executive Trophy, Rusty
Burshell, Cool Change; 2.Graham Field,
Independence; 3.Neal Garrett, Strega.
PHRF C (4): 1.Ron Lewis, Incentive;
2.Brendan Drinkwater, Roswell. PHRF Non-Spin
(4): 1.Winner of the Hanbury Cup, Andy
Armstrong, Virginia H; 2.Dave Lively,
Lively Lady. Race Chairmen: Malcolm and Kathy
Brady.
Wolcott Memorial
Regatta: Gordon Wolcott
won the Wolcott Memorial Regatta, hosted by Norfolk Yacht & Country
Club. Gordon finished 5-3-1-2 to win. Randy
Stokes (12) and Mark Wheeler (12) tied for 2nd.
Len and Barb Guenther, former Hampton
Roads Mobjack racers, returned to the southern Bay to race in the record setting
Flying Scot NACs Championship Fleet.
Michigan Hobie 33, Thunderbolt, Scott
Maust, came south and took home the Hobie 33 North
American class championship trophy. Six boats, three of them from the
southern Chesapeake Bay, raced weekend before last. The local
favorites, Mirage, Christian Schaumloffel (22
points), and Will Roberts (26 points), Treaty of
Ghent, finished 2nd and 3rd respectively; the champion finished
with 18 points over 11 races. Race Chairmen: Malcolm and
Kathy Brady.
BLUEWATER RACING: The
Marblehead to Halifax starts July 8th, this coming Sunday,
and the Norfolk Yacht & Country Club "bluewater boys" are chomping at
the bit. Conrad Hall is racing his Morris 40,
Shearwater, and along as part of the crew are Pat
Patterson, Mark Shaw, and Frank
Stewart, as solid a bunch as anyone could want.
The 2007 Marion-Bermuda Race saw some
southern Bay racers shine. Venture, an Oyster 62, carrying a
boat-load of Chesapeake talent finished 2nd in the Class A Division and
Heron, J160, took 4th in the A Division and 8th overall. Crewing
on Venture were: Latane Montague, Stephen
Kistler, and Tom Ballantine, Brian
McCauley, and Leroi Lissenden. On
Heron, Peter Burch. Nice job, guys!

MURPHY'S LAW: At the Flying Scot
NAC regatta, I stood in for my Scot cousin, Angus MacBeagle, who couldn't make
it over "The Pond". The racing was great and the parties were
grand. Yrs Truly, the Murphster, one prone to party into the wee
hours, admits to negative thoughts, though, about the
playing of bagpipes at 7:45 AM. Beagle ears
are extremely sensitive, you know! /S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle,
the sailing spirit in us all.
