Don't toss your current copy of  The Racing Rules of Sailing  yet.  The current book (2005 -2008) is good for the entire 2008 season too.  US Sailing will publish a new book for the 2009 season and beyond.

RACERS AND THE RULES QUIZ:  If the Sailing Instruction does not specify, how many races must be completed in a six race series before one throw-out is given?  (Answer follows in this issue of SBRNYCU.)

Mark Boats have to prepare for a sundry of possibilities on the race course.  Saturday, Little Creek Cup mark boat skipper Wally Parolari was a busy man.  He dropped marks and pins for the signal boat and kept a watchful eye on the fleet mark roundings, among other normal duties.  Then, while the signal boat was shortening the course and taking finishes, he was called upon to take finishes and another location for the beach cat division of the regatta, which he did with aplomb.  After he delivered the catamaran finish sheets to the beachmaster, he retrieved the course marks and headed on home. Mission accomplished and all while on a frying-pan hot Chesapeake Bay.  Kudos to Wally and those like him.

Answer to RR Quiz Question:  Two.  Appendix A2 [RRS] says that "Each boat's series score shall be the total of her race scores excluding her worst score."  So, race organizers, beware.  If you are running a regatta of more than one race, racers get one throw-out, unless your S.I. specifies something different.  You can specify any number of throw-outs or none.  But, if you remain "silent" on the subject, racers can get rid of their biggest boo-boo.

MURPHY'S LAW:  These are the "Dog Days" of summer.  The Murphster certainly agrees with that assertion.  Just look at the racing schedule.  These are good days for any racing dawg!   Bring me my Eastern Shore flip flops - I'll need 4 matching ones for Bay Creek Resort  party howlin' and prowlin'!  /S/  Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
