# 357 SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE
Monday August 20, 2007 03:33PM
onUnofficial word around the docks is that, if
possible, the Stringray Point Regatta will consist of
3 races on Saturday and 2 on Sunday of Labor Day Weekend. More racing = more
fun!
Mark Arnold Captures His 10th Mobjack National
Championship: The 2007 Mobjack Nationals were hosted by
Fishing Bay Yacht Club in conjunction with the FBYC 68th Annual
Regatta. Mark's championship string was 1-2-1-1-1-[3]- 1.
Len Guenther finished 2nd and Meg Roberts
3rd.
Special Notice: THIS IS HUSH-HUSH!
This Wednesday, Aug 22, about 7:30pm, there will be a special celebration
of Bumps Eberwine's 82nd birthday. Racers and
friends are invited for beer and birthday cake on the Hampton YC flag
deck. For details contact Graham Field at 757-488-3931. Remember, DO
NOT TELL BUMPS - this is a SURPRISE PARTY for one of our Southern Bay
Treasures.
BLACK WIDOW WINS CAPE CHARLES
CUP: The Cape Charles Cup racers were greeted both
Saturday and Sunday with high winds and rolling seas as they started their more
than 20 miles course across the Bay. On the trip from Little Creek
(Norfolk) to Cape Charles, the race began in 18 to 20 knots, before tapering off
by early afternoon to almost zilch. Conditions for the Sunday morning
start were proof-perfect that weather-guessers have bad days too. The
predicted "light and variable" turned out to be neither. Racers again
clawed their way upwind (15+ knots) before rounding MOA and enjoying a beam
reach across the Bay to set up for the finish off Buckroe. 75 boats
did the 2007 Cape Charles Cup regatta hosted by Broad Bay Sailing
Association. Leo Wardrup's Black Widow
took 3rd in his fleet in the race to Cape Charles and 1st on Sunday's
return from the really "far side". The Cape Charles Cup is awarded to the
boat with the best combined corrected time for the two races. Racers,
families, and friends all enjoyed the Saturday evening soiree on Cape Charles
Bay Creek Resort Marina pier and the scrumptious barbeque buffet at the
post-race awards gathering Sunday at Bay Point Marina on Little Creek.

Plantation Light Race - August 24, THIS
FRIDAY - Evening Start. Check the headlights on your boat and
prepare to race in the "cool, cool, cool of the evening..." This is an
annual favorite sponsored by Hampton YC. The race starts in Hampton Roads
Harbor (first warning at approximately 1900 hours (7PM). Possible courses
are in the Notice of Race (page 99 of the 2007 CCV Racing Guide).
There is no time limit, so, plan to race into the night, and maybe later,
depending on the winds. This is a sanctioned CBYRA event. Entries are
due no later than Thursday, August 23 at 1700 hours. For info
contact Bob Thomas at (757) 898-9407. Because boats probably will
finish at disparate times, awards are presented at the HYC awards ceremony in
December.
LATANE MONTAGUE is Hampton One Design National
Champ: Latane Montague and crew Chris Kennedy had three bullets
in the 6 race event to win a tiebreaker and the title. Their finishes were
4-1-3-1-[5]-1. Gordon Wolcott, the third generation
of Wolcott's sailing HOD's, finished 2-2-[4]-2-1-3 and in 2nd place.
Drew Johnson took 3rd overall. Thirteen entries
raced in the event hosted by Hampton Yacht Club. The Dougherty
Trophy for Most Valuable Crew went to Woody Granger, who
sailed with Gordon
Wolcott (2nd place); both are high school aged sailors.
Race Chairmen: Malcolm and Kathy
Brady.
Recently southern Bay racers lost one of their own,
Dana Dillon, to a devastating illness. Over the weekend,
Dana's crew sailed on Jim Forrester's Anjalei,
taking along a token of remembrance of him on board. They took a 2nd
in each of the two races.
Once a racer, always a racer...every time,
anywhere: David and Sherl Eberwine
were sighted in Cape Charles at Bay Creek, not racing, but
relaxin' this weekend. David is a long time mainstay and
booty-kicker with his J36, Sea Star, on the southern Bay racing
circuit. That was Dave and Sherl at the finish Saturday and the
start Sunday off Plantation Flats, buzzing around in a 2-person rubber
dinghy.
Can you top this?! Sunday morning at
Bay Creek, Susan Williams, sailing with Willoughby Racer
husband John on Fresh Air, came upon a downed party participant,
unconscious in the women's shower. Susan in her inimitable style,
had HIM removed along with the pile of clothing and the Miller Light his
friends had left for him earlier. Remember, what happens at Cape Charles,
stays at Cape Charles!
Ron Primm, speaking for the Dink Vail Regatta (Labor
Day Event), says they will accept entries for the regatta right up until
the skipper's meeting at 0800 on Saturday, September 1, 2007.
But, you do not have to wait - go ahead and enter now! Call Ron at
(75) 623-6234. This is a very nice Hampton Roads area event.
Close, so close: After racing more than
20 miles on Sunday, Phil Briggs' Feather, and
Bob Mosby's Cyrano finished within one second of one
another (corrected time).
Labor Day Cometh:

John Dodge, who has roots generally all over
the southern Bay and particularly in Fishing Bay and Richmond, was aboard
American Eagle when she won the 12 Meter North American
Championship in Newport earlier this month.
