onLABOR DAY WEEKEND IS UPON US! SPEND
IT SAILING!
ANNA is GOLDEN! Anna Tunnicliffe
(former southern Bay 3-time All American collegian at Old Dominion University -
class of 2005) won a gold medal in the Laser Radial class at The Good
Luck Beijing - 2007 Qingdao International Regatta in
China. Anna is drawing a bead on the trials for the 2008
Olympics, hoping to return to China for the "big dance".
* STINGRAY POINT
REGATTA: Fishing Bay / mouth of the Piankatank in the
Chesapeake Bay. Hosted by Fishing Bay YC. Racing on Saturday and Sunday
with Monday intentionally left open for deliveries home or casual
sailing. Fishing Bay Yacht Club has been hosting this event for many years
and it is one of the "best darn little regattas" on the Bay. For info
contact Event Chairman David Hinckle at (804) 271-7500 or email at Stingray@fbyc.net On-line registration is available and

Dark and stormy night...? NOT!
Racers in the annual Plantation Light Race, put on by
Hampton Yacht Club, had a great experience. Plenty of wind (10 knots and
into the teens) and favorable current most of the way. Overall, it was
great southern Bay night time racing. The A fleet course took them all the
way to Wolf Trap Light after Plantation and all the other fleets headed back to
Hampton Roads via York Spit Light. RESULTS: PHRF A (58.9 miles, 5
boats): 1.Jim Bordeaux, Solstice, J40;
2.Christian Schaumloffel, Mirage, Hobie 33;
3.Jim Williams/Will Roberts, Treaty of Ghent, Hobie
33. PHRF B (46.1 miles, 3 boats): 1.Bob Archer,
Bad Habit, Pearson Flyer; 2.Dave Bouchard,
Ganar!, Santana 35; PHRF C (46.1 miles, 2
boats): 1.Alan Bomar, Roundabout, J24;
PHRF Non-Spin (46.1 miles, 7 boats): 1.Harry
Tenney, Margarita, Roberts 43; 2.Leo Wardrup,
Black Widow, Irwin 38; 3.Jake Brodersen, Midnight
Mistress, C&C 35. PRO-Bob Thomas.
RACERS AND THE RULES QUIZ: The Race
Committee sets the starting line 10 minutes before the warning signal.
Just after the warning signal, the mark boat moves the starting pin
several boat lengths to weather, thus changing the line angle by 10
degrees. The Race Committee makes no signal that this has happened and
the prep signal is subsequently made. Is this an error by the Race
Committee? (Answer follows in this issue of
SBRNYCU.)
Last week Scuttlebutt (issue 2415)
mentioned a young man who lost a protest in the 2007 V15 Nationals, and,
consequently lost the regatta championship title by 1 point. The
gentleman took the microphone at the awards presentation at St. Francis Yacht
Club, graciously commended the protest committee, and said that "... they made
the right decision." The young man was identified as a high school coach
from San Diego, named Steve Hunt.

* CBYRA ANNAPOLIS RACE WEEK:
Great competition from all over the Bay and beyond. Three days of solid
racing and solid partying. If you are going, you need to get entered and make
arrangements for your boat and crew accommodations now. For info
contact the CBYRA Office in Annapolis at (410) 263-0839 or email at office@cbyra.org. Regatta
Chairman is Bobby Frey.
Somebody overboard? Throw a stick at
him! Recently, Innovation Awards were presented at the National
Marine Manufactures Association trade show. One of the awards went to the
Mustang Survival "Rescue Stick"@ It's a 14
inches long, non tethered, "...baton-shaped flotation device that [when tossed
into the water] automatically inflates a large horseshoe shaped collar that
provides 35 lbs of buoyancy", says BoatU.S. Magazine, September
2007. Like the NASA space shuttle, it's a bit pricey ($140), but, with a
little prep, can be used again. Check it out on www.rescuestick.com.
Media Watch: Getting the local southern
Bay print media to recognize sailing-racing as a sport can be difficult.
Ask any event organizer. The Daily Press (Virginia Peninsula,
Newport News, Hampton, etc.) ran a nice blurb on Anna Tunnicliffe's gold medal
win in China in their Sunday edition, sports section, "Star Track"
column.
The course of the Hampton Annual Regatta (Saturday,
September 8th), will take the boats close to Middle Ground
Light. Rob Gonsoulin, owner of MGL, will
have invited guests at the light with the specific purpose of watching the
race. Be sure to give them a wave as you sail by!

Answer to RR Quiz Question: The Race Committee acted
within the rules. Rule 27.2 (RRS) permits the starting mark to be
moved anytime before the prep signal.
MURPHY'S LAW: The
Murphster is liking the sound of that Rescue Stick@ thing.
First though, Yrs Truly will have to overcome the
overwhelming beagle-desire to chase the stick. But, my problem is
nothing like what my Labrador Retriever buddies will experience. We're
talking major attitude adjustment here! Just picture man's best
friend paddling away with man's rescue buoy! /S/ Murphy the
Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
Dear Readers,
The Murphster and staff will take
September 3rd, Labor Day off, too. Look for your
Southern Bay Racing News You Can Use, issue #359, on
Tuesday, September 4. Have a great weekend!
