# 370 SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE
Tuesday November 20, 2007 10:29AM
onHAPPY THANKSGIVING! AND, GOBBLE,
GOBBLE!
Renaissance Racer - Tom
Roberts, CBYRA vice-president for Region 4 (the southern Bay), has seen
and experienced racing from all the angles - both small boat and big boat.
Now Tom has teamed up with Blackwell Nottingham on a Hunter 37
cutter. They delivered their new baby from Solomons Saturday a week ago in
the teeth of a mini-gale and were delighted with her performance. "We had
everything up and she went just great," Tom said. Tom and Blackwell expect
to spend a lot of time on Adventure with families and friends.
They say the boat is going to be their "summer cottage". But, don't be
surprised to see the cottage on the race course in 2008!
MIRAGE, BAD HABIT, INCENTIVE,

THINK GABOON! The annual
GABOON RACE, is set for Sunday, December 2. This
year is the 30th Anniversary of the event. Line up your crew now,
'cause this is going to be a happening. "Pack up the babies, grab the
old ladies..." and anyone else who has ever wanted to go racing with
you. PHRF limits on the number of crew do not apply, but you
must have a valid PHRF certificate with at least a 5P equipment category.
For details or to enter, contact Phil Briggs at (757)
244-5477. The Gaboon Race is a staggered start
(pursuit) race sailed in Hampton Roads harbor and sponsored by
HYC. The first signal is at 1300. The start/finish line is Hampton
River, off the HYC docks.
In special recognition of the
30th Anniversary of the Gaboon Race, Hampton
Yacht Club will offer a GABOON GABRUNCH in the HYC Lounge on
race day. The brunch buffet will be served from 0900 to 1200. Cost is
$6.50 per person. Gather the crew early, "do brunch" and then do the
race.
A couple of years ago, some "bar talk" among racers instigated
the Chesapeake Bay Distance Racing Series which is
administered by Broad Bay Sailing Association. The standings were

windward-leeward) sanctioned races that are sponsored by southern Chesapeake Bay

Southern Bay Race Week will have a new event
chairman in 2008. Jack Pope will head up the
happening. Jack is an experienced event chairman, having honcho-ed a
number of regattas over the years, including the 300 boat Opti Nationals hosted
by HYC. Leigh Morgan Chapman, stepped down from event
chair duties after three very successful years as SBRW chairman.
Thanks go to Leigh for her service, energy, and dedication. She will
remain involved in the regatta, specifically as special liaison to major
sponsors. 2008 SBRW dates: May 30 - June 1,
2008.
Keep fingers crossed for a southern Bay racer who is close to
moving up to a Santana 30/30. Butch
Patterson currently sails a Capri 25, Small Potato, and
hopes to have the new baby soon.
Jacob Michael Clark hit the crew listings
last Monday. He weighed in at 6 pounds 7 ounces and measured 20.1
inches. Both parents, Joe and Brenda Switzer Clark, are doing great!
Brenda was a main crewbie on Graham Field's Independence for many
years, like...since kidhood.
Southern Bay Belles at Rolex International Women's
Keelboat Championships - This past week the
RIWKC regatta was sailed at Houston Yacht Club (TX). Walking
away with the title, Sally Barkow (former ODU All American),
along with Debbie Capozzi (former ODU), Amanda
Callahan, and Annie Lush, sat out the last race and
still finished 7 points ahead of the 2nd place team. Anna
Tunnicliff (former ODU All American) skippered the Austin YC Team
with Liz Bower (graduate of and assistant coach at ODU),
Ali Sharp and Molly Vandermoer
and finished 3rd. Finishing in 4th place, one point behind Tunnicliff, was
Derby Anderson (a Hampton Roads expatriate) skippering the
Annapolis YC team which included Jacqueline Schmitz,
Katherine Wade, and Lucy Kupersmith.
Anna Cobb Matchett (former ODU) and Kenney
Cobb sailed on one of two Southern YC teams along with Corrie
Clement (former ODU) and Leslie Higgins;
they finished 19th out of 39 teams. The International J/22 was the
boat used in this regatta. There were many, many southern Bay ladies at
the timepiece regatta.
Multihulls Kicked to the Curb by ISAF Council
- The ISAF Council has voted against multihulls racing in the
Olympics. Scuttlebutt 2474 - November 13, 2007, ran the following
posting: When the ISAF Council voted against any multihull event
for the 2012 Olympic Games to be held in Britain, it decided that in future the
only sailing boats to be raced should have one hull. In doing so, it voted
against the fastest boat at the Games, the only event open to both men and
women, a permanent fixture for three decades, the recommendation of its own
Events Committee, the strong endorsement of the host nation, and a sport invented
in Britain. For those wishing to sign a petition to the
International Olympic Committee (IOC) to allow multihulls to compete go to

SET IN CONCRETE
DATES FOR 2008:
SBRNYCU Murphy Goes Racing -

Southern Bay Race
Week - Friday, May 30 - Sunday, June 1, 2008 (racing

And, along these lines, the
complete schedule for the southern Bay is well along the way toward
publication. Representatives from sailing organizations, clubs, and
special event sponsors are working to pull together the final schedule for
2008. Look for an announcement in SBRNYCU of its completion
and availability, probably early in January.
Henry Amthor is 5o5 Chesapeake Bay Region Two
Champion... for the 8th time! Henry said his first two titles
in the 1990s he sailed with wife Barb. Then,
Henry teamed up with brother Doug for 5 more. This
year he had to have an "extended crew". In the qualifying regattas (5 out
of 7 sailed are counted for the title), Henry sailed with either Doug
Amthor, or Charles Smith, or Dustin
Romey, or Doug McKeige, or Sol
Marini. Now, that's a network!
Dear Readers,
The Murphster, and SBRNYCU
staff will take off next Monday (November 26) to recover from
