# 372 SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE
Monday December 10, 2007 08:59AM
onGood News for J/22 racers (and
others, too): PHRF of the Chesapeake has made an adjustment
to their 2008 Safety Requirements. It appears to allow boats who
meet everything but the lifeline requirement for Category 4P to sail in
Cat 4P races provided everyone on the boat wears a PFD. There are, of
course, details and explanations. So, read the info on the PHRF of the
Chesapeake Bay website, www.phrfchesbay.com
, click on 2008 Special Regulations For Safety Requirements,
and check out paragraph 4.2. If you have questions and/or
concerns contact your club PHRF delegate.
IMPORTANT: SPLITS
DECISION: PHRF racers in the SOUTH DIVISION of Region 4
are in the throes of deciding whether or not to adjust the rating lines between
the spinnaker fleets. Now is the time for skippers to let their
clubs PHRF delegates know what they think would be best for
fair, competitive racing. Because the Reg 4 South Div
did NOT approve the 2007 splits for 2008 at the annual
meeting, they are required to hold a special meeting of the delegates to
either change or ratify the splits. (See PHRF newsletter, The
Mainsheet, Winter 2007). PHRF Region VP, Mike Dale, expects to
call a meeting of delegates in early January. It is expected it will be
open to PHRF members. Now is the time to be part of the decision
process regarding what the Region (South Div) splits will be. Delegates
represent their clubs' membership in the voting. Talk it up, get your
reasoning organized, and LET YOUR PHRF DELEGATE(S) KNOW WHERE YOU
STAND. Do it now - it only takes a few phone calls. [NOTE: The clubs
in Region 4, South Division, are: BBSA, CCV, HYC, NYCC, OPCYC, PBC, SYC,
and YRYC]
HEADS-UP! New Year's Day racing is right
around the corner. There are two southern Bay January
1st racing opportunities - one is jointly sponsored by Old Point
Comfort YC and Hampton Yacht Club - for info and to enter contact
Dennis Miner (757) 867-1028 or Steve Lunsford at (757)
875-0907. Seaford Yacht Club has hosted their New
Year 's Day race for a long, long time - for info and to enter contact Chuck
Eldred at (757) 898-1025.
Are you a barefoot racer, or...?
For the racer who has everything - sailing boots that have open toe and
heel. To picture that imagine those worn out socks that are stuffed in the
tire-well in the trunk of your car - huge holes where toe and heel used to
be. So, you may be a candidate for the ZHIK BAREFOOT BOOT@ .
Their ad says in part "... you will feel like you are wearing no shoes,
but will have the added support and grip that wearing a boot
offers." These are available through Layline at www.layline.com

Remember the ISAF vote to dump multihulls, and others,
from the 2012 Olympic sailing classes?
Evidently, those who shouted in reasoned opposition are making progress.
Look who has joined the outcry. The following comes from the Friday
issue of Scuttlebutt (SCUTTLEBUTT 2491 - December 7 2007
(www.sailingscuttlebutt.com):
"RYA LEADS THE CALL FOR OLYMPIC RETHINK The Royal Yachting Association (GBR) is leading the push to have the Events for the 2012 Olympic Games reconsidered by the International Sailing Federation. Following the controversial decision by ISAF Council during its annual conference last month, at which it opted not to include a modern high performance dinghy for women, dropped the multihull event and introduced a match racing format for the women's keelboat event, the RYA has written to ISAF President Goran Petersson asking for the decision to be reconsidered. The RYA believes that the decisions taken are not in the best interests of the sport of sailing throughout the world, and requests that ISAF review its decision ...."

CBYRA Annual Meeting: Saturday at host Eastport Yacht Club, CBYRA delegates elected their Executive Board for 2008: President, Bobby Frey, Exe. Vice-President, Art Libby; Secretary, Keith Mayes, and Treasurer, C.B. Currier. Re-elected as Region 4 (that's the southern Bay) Vice-President is Tom Roberts. Also, noteworthy for southern Bay racers was the election of Kris Wilson as chairman of the One-Design (small boats) Division and Bruce Bingham to fill the shoes of retiring Gerald Smernoff as chairman of the Handicap (PHRF, MORC) Division. Several special CBYRA awards were presented at the meeting. Southern Bay homies, John and Lin McCarthy , were presented with the Marcia Grosvenor Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service.
MURPHY'S LAW: I have
noticed that a certain critter of the reindeer persuasion is getting a lot
of attention lately. He has rigged up a battery-powered beacon
light that he wears on his proboscis. I'm thinking that might work
for Yrs Truly, The Racing Beagle. I could use an
EPIRB strobe light set to flash whenever I need assistance at the party punch
bowl. /S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us
all.
