Deutsch from the southern Bay raced in 2008 District 11 Laser
Championships this past weekend. Against 40 full rig
Lasers, Kyle finished 4th and Jon 9th in strong competition away
from home. Congrats to our Laser guys!

Remember that advertisement a few years back that featured a
beautiful old sailing ship and the baritone voice-over declared,
"...the sails aren't made of canvas anymore..."?
Well, don't say that to Jerry Latell at Ullman Sails Virginia
in Deltaville/Irvington. Jerry's loft has taken on building a suit of
sails for the Susan Constant, the largest of the three Jamestown ships.
Jerry said. "We will machine stitch the "membranes" and hand work everything
else. The edges are all roped and there are lots of grommets and cringles
to be sewn and spliced. There are no metal fittings in these sails; it is
all done with cloth and rope." Jerry has a blog on this, if you'd like to
follow the project more closely. http://latellsailmakers.blogspot.com/
Jerry and Andrea Latell race their B-25, Boomerang, regularly on the
southern Bay.
77 already registered for this coming weekend CAPE
CHARLES CUP - deadline for entries is TODAY, Monday, August 18 at 1700 /
5PM! For details and answers to questions
contact Scott Almond at (757) 471-2663 or CCCup@broadbaysailing.org and
see info below in this issue of SBRNYCU.
Of 17 entries, 15 out-waited the Friday night,
starting time thunderstorm and did the race to PLANTATION
LIGHT, sponsored each year by Hampton Yacht Club.
The start was delayed from 7PM to 8:30PM, giving those who raced a safe
and fairly uneventful trip around the course that was over 40 nautical
miles, rounding the Cape Charles City mark and York Spit Light before returning
to the finish. The first boat to finish appeared around 5AM and the
last got in around 9AM Saturday morning. RESULTS: PHRF A (4
boats) - 1.Craig Olsen, Namesake (Olson 30);
2.Christian Schaumloffel, Mirage (Hobie
33). PHRF B (3 boats) - 1.Ben Cuker,
Callinectes (Cal 30-3); 2.Andy Armstrong, Virginia
H (Soverel 30). PHRF C (4 boats) -
1.Martin Casey, Bow Movement (Catalina 27); 2.
Justin Morris, The Hunter (Hunter 26.5). PHRF
Non-Spin (4 boats) - 1.Harry Tenney, Margarita
(Roberts 43); 2.Jim Forrester, Anjalei (Catalina
387). PRO: Bob Thomas.
Third generation Hampton One Design racer,
Gordon Wolcott, is 2008 HOD National Champion. Gordon comes
from strong HOD lines; his grandfather was Judge
Wolcott, an HOD "original", and his father is
Eddie Wolcott, still very active in the fleet.
Gordon, sailing with another "youngster", Sam Stokes (Randy
Stokes' son) led the regatta from start to finish (1-1-1-[7]-3-6), fighting his
way through light air on Saturday and Sunday. Threatening
thunderstorms drove the fleet in on Friday before the scheduled races. On
Saturday they got in 4 races and on Sunday they were bedeviled with the
very light stuff, but managed to get in 2 shortened races. This
year's event was in Urbanna, sponsored by the HOD class. The HOD class
will celebrate their 75th Nationals in 2009 at Hampton Yacht
Club. Finishing second overall was Latane
Montague (3-3-4-1-2 [5]) and third was Eddie
Wolcott (2-4-3-3-1 [9]). Race Officers were Malcolm
and Kathy Brady.
Youth on "Big Boats":
Namesake, Craig Olsen's, Olson 30 that won PHRF A in this past
weekend's Plantation Light race, benefited from an "infusion of youth" on
the crew. Kelsey Olsen, was aboard, home from Tulane
University, and sailing with her dad.
Langley Yacht Club had 4 owners hand the helm over to their kids
on "Kid Skipper Day" Saturday - a great way to get kids sailing on keel
boats!
Coming Up This Coming Weekend (Friday - Sunday,
August 22-24)
CAPE CHARLES CUP, August
23-24. This is the point to point and back again
event. On Saturday the race is from Little Creek to Cape Charles and
on Sunday from Cape Charles to the finishing line off Buckroe. Skippers
Meeting and Check-in Party is Friday at Bay Point Marina on Little Creek
(Norfolk) at 6:00PM Awards will be presented at the post-race
party Sunday, which is also at Bay Point Marina on Little Creek, beginning
at 6:30pm. There is racing for all PHRF classes, as well as for Cruising
classes. The race for the Cape Charles Cup is a happening.
For details and answers to questions contact Scott Almond at (757) 471-2663
or CCCup@broadbaysailing.org
NOR and Sailing Instructions are available at www.CCCup.net Both races
are sanctioned events for PHRF classes and are part of the Chesapeake Bay
Distance Racing Series. CCC is sponsored by Broad Bay Sailing Association.
Jump on this August happening!
The first ever Albemarle Hospice Regatta and Party
is all set for Saturday, August 23rd, at Elizabeth City, North
Carolina. There's a welcome reception on Friday, August
22nd, with the racing and the post-race dinner on Saturday. And,
area clubs (PRYC, EYC, CYC, and OYC) will be competing for the
Archer Farmer Cup (based on overall low point score). This is the
beginning of a hopefully annual "good thing"! For info contact Jim Elliott
or Sean Robey at info@albemarlehospiceregatta.com
or call Jim at (252) 267-5530.
In a recent issue of Scuttlebutt (2661, Thursday August
14, 2008) the editor printed a comment from southern Bay sailor
David Hazlehurst, who has raced more Lasers than most of us
have seen. David was providing an historical perspective on the recent
weather in Weymouth. David recalls the Savannah afternoon thunderstorms in
1996, one in particular, that exceeded whopper status. According to David,
he later remembered Savannah as having quite "...an afternoon sea
breeze"!
Do you know.... what Charlie and Juliet,
Mike and Oscar, and Victor and Romeo have in common with your
daddy? No, they did not all "walk to school in blinding
snow storms, even in June!" But, they are first names used for
letters in the Phonetic Alphabet. Note - there is no Nan, Roger, Peter,
George, or William anymore. As far as your daddy - that would be Papa
for "P".
Southern Bay racer Eric Matherne has been
keeping a close eye on Olympic sailor John Dane.
Dane is sailing in his first Olympics after trying for 40 years, yep, since
1968, to make the "Big Show". Dane and his son-in-law, Austin
Sperry made it to Qingdao in the two-man Star class. Eric
remembers when he worked with Dane while he was going through part of the
long, frustrating, part of his dream to be an Olympian. Now, Eric and
the rest of us are watching him on the NBC Nightly News!
USA Olympic Medal Report:
Zach Railey took Silver in the Finn (26 entrants) class;
Sally Barkow/Carolyn Howe/Debbie Capozzi finished 7th in the 15
entrants Yngling class; Tim Wadlow/Chris Rast finished
6th in the 19 entrants 49er class. Classes still with Medal Races to be
sailed at the Men's and Women's 470; Men's and Women's RS:X (Windsurfers); Laser
and Laser Radial; Star; and Tornado.
