# 408 SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE
Wednesday August 27, 2008 04:59PM
onMIRAGE and CATS' PAWS Win CAPE
CHARLES CUPS, PHRF and Cruising Divisions respectively. Cape
Charles Cup organizers decided last winter to give a CC Cup to two boats in
their unique southern Bay regatta - one to the PHRF classes winner and one to
the Cruising classes winner. They figured double the fun in presenting
double the number of beautiful Weems and Plath@ lantern trophies.
And, from the sailors reactions, it's a good idea! These trophies go
to the boats with the lowest total corrected time over the two days of
racing - day one from Little Creek (Norfolk) to Cape Charles, and on day 2, from
Cape Charles to Buckroe (Hampton). This year Christian
Schaumloffel's Hobie 33, Mirage romped and stomped her way
across the Bay, in both directions, winning PHRF A going and
coming. Mirage made the most of steady 10-12 conditions on
Saturday. On Sunday, she hung in there in the light stuff at the
start, and simply took off when breezes built, eventually, to
whitecaps, thanks to a lovely sea breeze. Mike and Eileen
Turner's Cats' Paws won the Cruising B fleet on day 1,
registering a particularly fast trip across in the 20 mile Little
Creek to Cape Charles race on Saturday and preserved their
total corrected time by their second place finish on the 15 miles from
Cape Charles to Buckroe on Sunday.
CAPE CHARLES CUP REGATTA - Eighty (80)
entries - 40 PHRF racers and 40 Cruisers - in what is fast
becoming a southern Bay classic event. This year there were 5 PHRF fleets
and 3 Cruising Fleets. Here are each day's winners in each fleet.
PHRF A (6 boats): Mirage, Christian
Schaumloffel (won both days and won the PHRF Division Cape Charles
Cup) PHRF B (12 boats): Graceful, Bob
Beck / Charis, Ryan
McCrillis PHRF C (6 boats):
April Tied, Tim Ketten (won both
days) PHRF Non-Spin (Double Headsail) (7 boats):
Black Widow, Leo Wardrup / Puff Card,
Walter Boatwright PHRF Non-Spin
(Single Headsail): Restless VIII, Sonny
Smith (won both days) Cruising A (11
boats): Quantum Leap, Jay Rickles /
Outpost, Gary
Prizzia Cruising B (16 boats):
Cats' Paws (won Cruising Division CC Cup),
Michael Turner / Anjalei, Jim
Forrester Cruising C (13 boats):
Liquid Courage 2, Jamie Collins / Outward Bound
II, Dave Wilbar. Event Chair - Jim
Williams PRO - John McCarthy Official
Scorer - Scott Almond RC Signal Boat - Art
Quanstrom RC Comm/Safety Boat - Ken Stepka
What happens in Cape Charles, stays in Cape
Charles, except ...
Dave Wilbar singled handed his
Catalina 22, Outward Bound II, both days of the Cape
Charles Cup in the Cruising C fleet, taking a 4th on Saturday and a first on
Sunday.
While he ain't no Michael Phelps, Jeff
Rogers made good use of the Bay Creek Marina Resort lagoon after
Saturday's race - Jeff got in a swim, before the rum got seriously
flowing! Jeff was crewing on Jim
Forrester's Anjalei.
Jim and Bev Borberg not
only coordinated feeding the Cape Charles Cup sailors over the three days,
they also took a 2nd and a 3rd in PHRF Non-Spin (1HS) in
Dreamtime - if you need a deal on "days-old" sandwich buns
or to view some nice trophies, see Bev and Jim.
The big cat, George and Nina Treiber's
Cheshire, was among those who served as Host Boats for the racers
at Bay Creek on Saturday afternoon - AAHHHYAH,
AAHHHYAH!!!
Bill Barnes started the "Invasion of
Cape Charles" 4 years ago when he organized the very first 13 boat
CCCup - a man with vision who dared to take the risk! And, in
the background, providing mega support, then and now, Leo
Wardrup (Black Widow).
Broad Bay Sailing Association Vice-Commodore,
Brendan Drinkwater, practiced up for his role next year when he
will assume the CCCup responsibilities of current Commodore Jerry
Pattenaude - Brendan wore his blue blazer (with flip-flops, T-shirt and
shorts) throughout the weekend!
And, of course, there were the all racers, who
went to Cape Charles, and danced "like nobody was watching" - they shook the
pier to the beat of the band!
AWESOME ANNA! Anna Tunnicliffe has
won an Olympic Gold Medal in sailing (Laser Radial). And, to make
the victory even more memorable, she did it after being over early (OCS) in the
medal race and coming back to finish 2nd to take the overall
GOLD! By now, gazillions of words have been written about Anna,
and more will be. Just remember, she is a 2005 grad of Old Dominion
University in Norfolk, VA, and from there she has begun this trip into
accomplishment and recognition at the highest level. Gary
Jobson quoted Anna in a 2007 interview as saying "...before college I
wasn't anybody in sailing." We have many blessings here on the southern
Bay and being able to share this part of Anna's life close-up is one of
them. CONGRATULATIONS to Anna and her collegiate coach,
Mitch Brindley, and ODU!
ALBEMARLE HOSPICE REGATTA - #1 is in the books!
At the first annual AHR, in Elizabeth City, 17 boats entered the
fray and came away happy, having had a great day of sailing - no Hurricane Fay -
and helped a good cause! Look for more good stuff to come from this group
of hard workers. RESULTS: Spinnaker Class: 1.Chris
Elliott, Matador (J/24); 2.Chuck Monsees,
Rockette (J/29); 3.Jim Elliott, Bizarre Tripp
(Tripp 26). Non-Spinnaker Class: 1.Terry
McKinney, Wild Thang (San Juan 28); 2.Wayne

Cup, Terry McKinney, Wild Thang.
Event Directors: Sean Robey and Jim Elliott.
505, 29er, 49er, Moth and any other Performance
Dinghy Sailors on the Southern Bay - Graham Garrenton,
is pulling together a "pipeline for communication" that he
hopes will help further participation among these types of boats and will
help those who have them move about the racing scene more easily.
Graham says he has "...spoken with several folks in the northeast who are eager
to share info, in hopes we can boost some travel and help people moving from
region to region to get hooked up with the local scene." If you are
interested, please contact Graham at grahamgarrenton@cox.net

Lenore Foster, long time organizing board
member for the TURKEY SHOOT HOSPICE REGATTA (October
10-12, 2008), is the "model" for a new character in the
REX MORGAN M.D, comic strip by Woody Wilson and Graham
Nolan. The daily strip already has introduced the story
line, where Lenore, one of Rex's patients, hounds him to "come sailing" with her
in a special regatta in October. The regatta is the Turkey Shoot Hospice
and the story line will lead up to and through the actual regatta. The
details of the story are fictional (they say...). Wilson is doing this as
a birthday gift to the real Lenore; they are long time friends. Wilson and
Nolan are donating the artwork to the Hospice regatta to be auctioned for a
donation to the Hospice cause. There are especially good
unintended consequences - HOSPICE REGATTAS across the country will receive
recognition - there are an estimated 30 million regular readers of the
syndicated strip.
2008 HAMPTON ANNUAL - MIDDLE GROUND LIGHT

fleets - OPEN TO ALL. Racing is in Hampton Roads
harbor. First warning is set for 1030 /

added some more flare to the event. Really - between 0915 and 1000,
he will have set up a flare exercise just outside the
harbor. There will be a designated area where during this specified time,
in a specified area, boaters, whether or not they are racing, may
light off their old flares. There are strict USCG requirements which
must be followed, so if you plan to do the "flare thing", YOU MUST CONTACT
MARK WHEELER (Safety Officer) at mark.m.wheeler@verizon.net
And, this is the race where each competitor receives an action photo of his
boat. The photos are presented at the HYC Annual Awards Night on December
9, 2008. Entries are due no later than high noon on Friday, September
5th. Contact Malcolm or Kathy Brady at (757) 723-3244 for entry
info.

Dear Readers,
Because of the Labor Day holiday,
this coming Monday, September 1, issue #409 of
Southern Bay Racing News You Can
Use, will arrive in your email on Tuesday, September
2nd. Have a great holiday! Murphy sends
regards! SBRNYCU staff
MURPHY'S LAW: Yrs Truly,
the Racing Beagle, took in all the post-race party at Cape Charles
from start to finish. It was great, right down to the Sunday morning
breakfast biscuit with rum jelly and a brewski latte!
Awesome. And, the Murphster maintained the 2012
Olympic training regimen with a lap of the lagoon and a run through the
marshes! /S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us
all.
