Hampton Annual - Middle Ground Light Race
organizers sidestepped Saturday's Tropical
Storm Hanna, and were rewarded with a lovely day of gentle breezes and
sunshine on Sunday in Hampton Roads Harbor. Twenty-six (26) boats
re-worked their schedules and raced yesterday. A number even took
part in the pre-race Flare Exercise which had been scheduled by event chairman,
Mark Wheeler. RESULTS: PHRF A (6 boats) -

Race Chairmen - Malcolm and Kathy Brady
Friend of the southern Bay, "Mr. Albacore", Barney
Harris, checked in when he saw the "Hanna-delays" issued for
Saturday events. Barney said, "Whatsa matter with you guys?? An
entire year's worth of wind in one day and [you're] gonna
squander it?!" Barney, who has carried away more championships from
southern Bay hosted regattas than can be counted, can say that. Harken
back to one Albacore Championship event sailed in Hampton Roads harbor
where, on the final day, the wind was steady at 35 knots with higher,
capsize-causing gusts. Half the 35 boat fleet stayed on
shore. Not, Barney, he and 11-12 Albacore teams raced and
he won it all on the last leg of the only race sailed.
Watch out for those "Bennetts Creek" racers!
On Sunday, the father-son duo, Bumps and David
Eberwine, both of whom make their homes on Bennetts Creek (Suffolk,
VA), each won their PHRF Fleet in the Hampton Annual - Middle Ground Light
Race. Bumps won PHRF C in Spray and David won PHRF A in
Sea Star.
SCOOTER TOO to the
rescue! Dick Boykin and his grandson, Scooter, were
pressed into medivac service Sunday. The Boykins became a water-born
version of M*A*S*H, when they used their speedy Wellcraft to carry
a raceboat's crew member who had sustained a broken finger to shore
for care.
So snazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzy - those
PF Flyer red crew shirts get A++ from the crew / sailing team
fashion experts. Nice...very nice!
The 3 southern Bay armed services clubs, Norfolk Naval
Sailing, Old Point Comfort Yacht Club (Army), and Langley Yacht Club (Air

MURPHY'S LAW: While
the racing was on hold Saturday, Yrs Truly, the Racing Beagle,
made the most of the TS Hanna induced oceanfront beach conditions -
did some unbelievable body surfing! The same people who say
beagles can't body surf probably still believe bumblebees can't fly!
/S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle, the
sailing spirit in us all.
