SEA STAR, COOL CHANGE,
FAT-DRUNK-STUPID, and VIRGINIA H
take wins on opening day of CCV Fall Series. With a SW
breeze that never dropped below 8 knots and changed direction at most by 10
degrees, the sun shining, and the air temps in the high 80 degrees, what's not
to like? A perfect day to open a fall series. Thirty-one (31)
skippers and crews got down to some real racing to kick-off the last major
series of the season on the southern Bay. The fleet got two races in, as
planned, and here is how the standings for the day look: RESULTS (over
2 races): PHRF A (8 boats) - 1.David

In the 2008 Serio Hampton One-Design Regatta at the
HOD "birth club", HYC, Mark Wheeler and Graham Garrenton took
1st place ([2] -2-1-1-1-1) and Charlie McCoy and Charles McCoy
III took 2nd (1-1-2-2-2-[3]) in the 4 boat fleet. Race Chairmen -
Malcolm and Kathy Brady.
Saturday, Midnight Mistress, Jake and Pat
Brodersen's C&C 35, looked like "The African
Queen" approaching the starting line at the Tri-Service Regatta.
When the engine exhaust system broke on the way to the event,
Jake did an on-the-move-temporary fix; let the exhaust exit through the
open cockpit locker and the cooling water run through the bilge pump. Got
that picture? Jake and Pat get an award for "folks you want with you
in your bunker"!

Cup at the annual showdown gathering among the three armed
services clubs, OPCYC (Army), Norfolk Naval Sailing Association, and Langley
Yacht Club (Air Force). Sixty boats, divided into two fleets contested the
Cup. Jake and Pat Brodersen, Midnight Mistress,
won the racing group of 20 boats and Seth Parkins,
Charisma, won the 40 boat cruising group, 33 of whom finished
.
Youth Sailing Update: The
Virginia Interscholastic Sailing Association (VISA) began the
fall season Saturday at host Norfolk Yacht and Country Club with 8 high
schools fielding 16 teams. Norfolk Collegiate, coached by
Chris Behm and led by Ian Stokes won the day,
followed by Christ Church and Smithfield. The VISA teams
tangle again this coming Saturday, again at NYCC.
Schooner VIRGINIA finishes 3rd in the 360 mile race around
Prince Edward Island. Capt. Hank
Moseley, brought VIRGINIA in behind Pride of
Baltimore II and first place finisher Spirit of Bermuda.
The Spirit of Bermuda has a cold molded hull, carbon spars, and
88 feet of deck length - she is "made to race" and appears to be a schooner
racing force with which to be reckoned.
MURPHY'S LAW: Yrs Truly, the
Racing Beagle, spent the weekend curled up watching coverage
of Hurricane Ike's devastation and being especially thankful for all we
have here on the southern Chesapeake. And, hoping folks in Texas and along
the Gulf Coast can somehow find the courage to deal with what has so tragically
beset them. /S/ Murphy
the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
