onIT'S THE DAY WE HONOR OUR FELLOW SAILOR, CHRISTOPHER
COLUMBUS. CHRIS WAS MOST DEF A RACER, MOST LIKELY OF THE BLUEWATER
STRIPE. HONOR CHRIS BY LEAVING WORK EARLY AND GOING FOR A
SAIL!!
2008 HOSPICE TURKEY SHOOT REGATTA IS IN THE
BOOKS! One hundred and thirty (130) boats raced
in the event which opened on Friday night with the usual welcome
party at Yankee Point Marina. Twelve fleets (two Divisions) competed
on Saturday on drop mark courses, and, on Sunday, did an
up-the-river-and-back pursuit race. That many boats racing
up the Rappahannock River from the mouth of the Corrotoman to Urbanna and back
on a perfect day (10-15 knots) was a perfect ending to a great regatta.
Every single boat finished ahead of the time
limit. Steve Bowen and his crew on DREAM
ON (S2 7.9) are overall winners of the Lightning
Division (PHRF classes), and, as such, will represent the Hospice Turkey
Shoot at the National Hospice Alliance Regatta this coming
Spring. Dream On sails out of Yorktown,
Virginia. In the Flying Cloud Division , Frank
Birdsall's SPITKIT (Flying Scot) won his 11 boat fleet each
day and won the Flying Cloud Division overall trophy by virtue of
his win (among all Flying Cloud Division boats) in Sunday's pursuit
race. Event Chairman - Alan Young; Principal Race
Officer - John McCarthy; Official Scorer - John
Ritter; Mark Boats - Jim Young and Howie Grover; USCG
Aux OIC - Jim Wroth.
'ROUND THE LIGHTS RACE - October 25 -
sponsored by Old Point Comfort Yacht Club. This is a CBYRA
sanctioned event for PHRF boats and it counts in the Chesapeake Bay
Distance Race Series sponsored by Broad Bay Sailing Association. There is
a Cruising fleet for non-PHRF boats. All boats must meet the PHRF 4P
equipment and accommodations requirements. Don't miss the opportunity to
save money ($5) by entering before October 18th. This event
features a pursuit start and is unique in that each racer decides which
lighthouse, either Middle Ground Light or Thimble Shoal Light to round
first. Be sure to study your tide and current charts! Send your
entries to OPCYC, c/o Dennis Miner, 205 Eric Nelson Run, Yorktown, VA
23693. Or, call Dennis at (757) 867-1028. This is a
great event with a nice post-race party and awards at the OPCYC clubhouse on Ft
Monroe. Your entry fee covers skipper as well as all crew.
In CCV Fall Series Race #4, Cyrano,
for want of a clevis pin, lost her headstay. The crew, it turns out,
performed admirably, but even then, after a prolonged and excellent repair
effort, were not able to continue racing. Here is part of a message
they [via crew member Carla Nagel] sent to their owner/skipper,
Bob Mosby, who was on vacation in Italy at the time:
Regarding the failing headstay, "We are stuck on the two reasonable
explanations as to why this occurred. The first revolves
around the fact that an unwitting crew member brought a banana on the boat…..not
knowing the evil nature of bananas on boats….Said banana was tossed overboard to
punish it on the ride home….The second plausible explanation is that Bob did not
want us showing him up while he was in Italy---and put a secret Italian curse on
us. Enjoy Italy, Bob. Ciao."
What? Should Bob
worry??
BOLO (Be On Look Out) for Schooners!
THE GREAT CHESAPEAKE BAY SCHOONER RACE starts Thursday, October 16,
within sight of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge (Annapolis side) and finishes
sometime Friday, October 17th, near Thimble Shoal Light, with the grand
schooners docking in host city Portsmouth, Virginia. This year there are
53 schooners, including our own VIRGINIA, racing. Sponsoring
clubs are Broad Bay Sailing Association (Virginia Beach), Fells Point Yacht Club
(Baltimore), Portsmouth Boat Club (Portsmouth), and Town Point Yacht Club
(Norfolk). The October issue of SPINSHEET
MAGAZINE contains the Official Preview Program for the event and
is already available (and FREE) at the usual distribution
locations. Even if you are not fortunate enough to be actually racing on
one of these beauties, it is a wonderful thing to see them under full
sail!
