Baltimore II is first to finish at Thimble Shoal.
Virginia's nemesis, The Pride, rolled down the Bay from
Annapolis, Thursday afternoon and through the night to finish this
year's Great Schooner Race at Thimble Shoal at 6:16:03 AM on Friday. Skipper Jan
Miles won line honors as well as the AA Fleet on corrected time. Our
Virginia (skipper Hank Mosely) finished 2nd in the water at
8:30:36AM, but 4 in her fleet corrected on her with handicap times, pushing
her to 6th once all the paperwork was done.
'ROUND THE LIGHTS RACE - October 25- THIS COMING
SATURDAY - sponsored by Old Point Comfort Yacht Club.
This is a CBYRA sanctioned event for PHRF boats and it counts in the
Chesapeake Bay Distance Race Series sponsored by Broad Bay Sailing
Association. There is a Cruising fleet for non-PHRF boats. All boats
must meet the PHRF 4P equipment and accommodations requirements. This
event features a pursuit start and is unique in that each racer decides which
lighthouse, either Middle Ground Light or Thimble Shoal Light to round
first. Send your entries to OPCYC, c/o Dennis Miner, 205 Eric Nelson Run,
Yorktown, VA 23693. Or, call Dennis at (757) 867-1028.
This is a great event with a nice post-race party and awards at the OPCYC
clubhouse on Ft Monroe. Your entry fee covers skipper as well as all
crew.
OYSTER ROAST AND A REGATTA
TOO!!
Saturday, November 8th, 6:00PM to 10:00PM - CNU
2nd ANNUAL ALUMNI REGATTA AND OYSTER
ROAST. This event serves as a fund raiser
for the Christopher Newport University Sailing
team. Alumni, parents, friends, and supporters are invited
to join current team members. There's a regatta involving the CNU team
members, former and current, followed by a true Chesapeake Bay Oyster Roast on
the grounds of the James River Marina located across the Creek from the CNU
Sailing Center. Sailing and slurpin' - ya just can't beat that! Plan
for a modest charge ($20) - it is, after all, intended to raise funds for
the team! For info please contact CNU head coach Dan Winters
at CNUsailing@aol.com
or assistant coach Jim White at jwhiteii@cox.net
Phil and Arabella Denvir,
Premier Sailing (Irvington, Virginia) paid a visit to the
Sunfish group at Grandview (Hampton) yesterday. The Denvirs covered
entry for two J/24's in the Turkey Shoot Regatta recently, one of which was
donated for the Hospice Women's Team boat.
COLLEGE
CORNER: Christopher Newport University's Ben France and Johanna
Faroe placed first in A Division at the Washington College
(Chestertown, MD) Open this past weekend. It's a great time to be peaking,
two weeks prior to the War Memorial Regatta. This coming week, CNU will be
hosting their Webb Regatta with teams from Ocean County, Virginia,
Maryland, Delaware, Salisbury, Virginia Tech, and William and Mary.

MURPHY'S
LAW: Find your fleece stuff, your warmest
socks, and your best layering hoodies - the "Big Cool" is coming and it
will likely be here in time for your Frostbite
Series! Keep this in mind: the increase of
the rum (by jigger) in the Hot Buttered Grog must be directly
proportional to the decrease by degree in temperature! /S/
Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
