New Rule Books are coming soon!  This past week  the new  Racing Rules of Sailing for 2009-2012  was unveiled at the US SAILING Annual General Meeting in St. Petersburg, FL.   There are a number of significant changes, all of which will be covered in detail at the  MURPHY RULES clinic, set for January 24, 2009, at Norfolk Yacht and Country Club (see information below).  US SAILING members should look for their copies of the new rule book to arrive in the mail in a few weeks.  If you are not yet a member of US SAILING, now is the time to join - membership includes the rule book.

FROSTBITE SERIES 2008 - begins this coming Sunday, November 2, and runs every Sunday in  November.  Racing  in Hampton Roads Harbor and around fixed marks.   A PHRF certificate is required (except for Cruising class), but the crew limitations do not apply.  This is a great way to keep the rust from setting in and a good crew builder for the coming season.  The first warning signal is at a "very civilized" noon, 1200.  For info and to enter contact Brian Deibler at (757) 224-4272 or (757) 715-8977.    Hampton Yacht Club sponsors this Series, which is OPEN TO ALL.

SBRNYCU   MURPHY RULES - 2009:  Understand the rules, including  all the changes for 2009 - 2012. January 24, 2009, Saturday,  0900 - 1545, at Norfolk Yacht and Country Club.   All you never thought you could know about the rules!  The focus of the clinic will be an interactive discussion of the racing rules with special emphasis on the rules changes that become effective this January.  Course instructor John McCarthy will explain all the important changes and work them into the "rules made easy format" he has used in the past, stressing understanding concepts rather than memorizing rules. The fee, if received prior to January 1,  is $40 ( $35 for attendee's family member); after January 1st, it will be $45 per person.  Your registration fee includes morning refreshments, lunch, and break beverages.  PRE-register by calling (757) 850-4225 or by email to mcbear@earthlink.net (include your name, address, and phone number and on the subject line put  MURPHY RULES.   This is an ideal opportunity for both skippers and people who crew.  Reserve your spot by registering early.

MORNING LIGHT  showing possible in Hampton Roads soon.    Jimmy Schools (Portsmouth Boat Club) is working with a downtown Norfolk theatre in hopes of arranging for the much touted sailing movie to be shown in mid-November .  Watch SBRNYCU for details on ticket prices and availability as soon as the info becomes available, hopefully later this week.  Otherwise, the closest place to see this special movie in the immediate future may be Baltimore.

'Round the Lights - "...and the last shall be first..."   The Meridian team aboard Sledd Shelhorse'  Farr 36 proved "...the last shall be first..." in this fall pursuit / staggered start race.  Meridian was last to start, but first across the finish line at a little after 3:30 PM.  FLEET WINNERS:  Spinnaker A (7 of 7 finished) - Sledd Shelhorse, Meridian;    Spinnaker B (14 of 14 finished) - Chuck Monsees, Rockette;    Spinnaker C (2 of 2 finished) - Justin Morris, The Hunter;    Non-Spinnaker 1 (5 of 7 finished) - Harry Tenney, Margarita;     Non-Spinnaker 2 (4 of 5 finished) - Steve Ritz, Excelsior;    Cruising 1 (5 of 12 finished) - Jim Forrester, Anajalei;     Cruising 2 (4 of 16 finished) - Ron Peterman, Content.    Event Chair - Dennis Miner.

MURPHY'S LAW:    The Halloween goblins will be out this coming Friday, October 31st.  It is traditional in the HYC Frostbite Series to sail the Halloween weekend  race "in costume".  So, drag out your special pumpkin orange foulies and fuzzies that Aunt Tillie gave you and put 'em to good use.  All the racing ghouls and gargoyles will be there.   /S/  Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
