MURPHY RULES - 2009: January 24, 2009, Saturday, 0900 -
1545, at Norfolk Yacht and Country Club. All you never thought
you could know about the rules! The focus of the clinic will be
an interactive discussion of the racing rules with special emphasis on the
rules changes that become effective this January.
Course instructor John McCarthy will explain all the important changes and work
them into the "rules made easy format" he has used in the past, stressing
understanding concepts rather than memorizing rules.
Topics will include:
*Basic Right-of-Way Rules,
*Total Re-write of Rule 18 (Mark Roundings),
*Additions to Rules on Obstructions,
*New Definitions, and a
*Special Section on Collisions, Protests, and
Liability.
The fee, if received prior to January
1, is $40 ( $35 for attendee's family member); after January 1st, it will
be $45 per person. Your registration fee includes morning refreshments,
lunch, and course materials. PRE-register by calling (757) 850-4225 or
by email to mcbear@earthlink.net (include
your name, address, and phone number and on the subject line put MURPHY
RULES). This is an ideal opportunity for both skippers and people
who crew. It's not too soon to register - as of last week, more than
one-third of the available seats are gone.
CCV HIGH POINT CHAMPIONS for
2008: CASH FLOW (Lloyd Griffin), COOL CHANGE
(Rusty Burshell), SPRAY (Bumps Eberwine), VIRGINIA

racing, and in the PHRF Non-Spin fleet, Harry Tenney and the

for consideration for the CCV HP, racers had to race in a minimum of 7 of the
season's 10 races. The 7 best finishes (of 10 races) in the

FROSTBITE RACE #2 - Officials abandon
due to lack of wind. FROSTBITE SERIES races happen
every Sunday in November, same time and place. Yep, even the Sunday
of Thanksgiving weekend. The first warning signal is at a "very civilized" noon,
1200. For info and to enter contact Brian Deibler at (757) 224-4272 or
(757) 715-8977. Hampton Yacht Club sponsors this Series,
which is OPEN TO ALL.
Lightnings, 420/FJs and the 5o5 Region II
Championship: Fall Fling racers got in 4 races on a
pretty damp and chilly Saturday. Sunday was beautiful in the morning and
they got in 3 more. Augie Diaz (Miami),
walked away with the top spot among the eleven 5o5s with
5 firsts places in the 7 races, followed by Henry Amthor
(2nd) and Chris Behm (3rd), both from
Hampton. Eleven boats raced in the FJ - 420 fleet and the top
3, when all was said and done, were 1. Patrick O'Bryan; 2. Samantha
Fickman; and 3.James Gardner. Five Lightnings came
out to play and the top 3 were: 1.Joan Hurbin, 2.Trevor Prior, and
3.Starling Mikell. A lot of readers will recognize Sam
Fickman (2nd in FJ/420) as the head sailing coach at Hampton University.
Race chairmen - Malcolm and Kathy Brady. The Fall Fling was hosted by
Hampton Yacht Club with sailing in the vicinity of Hampton Flats.
VIPERS coming to Hampton: Word is that
Rondar Boats , having been named an official builder of the Viper 640 is
bringing a couple of Vipers to Hampton. Vipers are 21-foot keelboats,
sailed with a crew of 3. There is currently one rated by PHRF of the
Chesapeake - Slithering carries a rating of 96 ODR on
the current PHRF valid list. For info, demos, etc, contact Brian
Bennett at Brian@rondarboats.com
. You can learn more about the VIPER 640 at www.rondarboats.com
or by emailing py@rondarboats.com.
Another source of info on Rondar Boats can be our local 505 sailors - Rondar
builds the 505 too.
The 2008 NOOD (National Off-Shore One Design)
Series is determining its "champion of champions" in the British Virgin
Islands. The winners (or designated reps) of the 9 national NOOD Regattas
are competing in Sunsail 39s in the BVI. Racing began Saturday, November
8, and finishes up tomorrow, Tuesday, November 11. Southern Bay racer
Christian Schaumloffel is there representing the St. Petersburg
NOOD Regatta. Keep your fingers crossed for our guys.
CCV Special Awards: This year
the CCV Commodore's Award was presented to John
Ritter, who stepped forward to handle duties as CCV Official Scorer on
the CCV Race Committee when Dickie Boykin experienced unexpected health
problems. John is also the Race Captain for Langley Yacht Club
and participates in racing and managing races at a Washington, DC, area
club during the week, where his official duties usually have him at
mid-week. The CCV Sportsmanship Award was presented to Tom
Connors, a CCV PHRF Non-Spinnaker racer who sailed his Fins
Up in all 10 of the CCV season long races in addition to a number of
other southern Bay clubs' events. Tom maintains dual members in CCV and
Langley YC. CCV recognized the core members of their faithful
race committee, led by Principal Race Officer John
McCarthy, along with John Ritter, Buc Lawrence, Lin
McCarthy, Bill Gibbings, Dickie Boykin, and
Glenn Giles.
2009 CCV Board of Directors: Tom Peddy
(Commodore); Jake Brodersen (Vice-Commodore); Joe Frederico
(Treasurer); Dave Taylor (immediate past-Commodore);
John McCarthy (Race Chairman); Christian Schaumloffel; Bob
Thomas; Karl Petersen; Rodney Paice; Dave McConnaughy;
and Barbara Lewis.
Southern Bay racer Bob Archer (Bad
Habit, PHRF B fleet) will be among the "guest crew" gang on
schooner Virginia when she leaves Norfolk next
weekend for Bermuda. We'll have to watch to see if Bob orders a set of
belaying pins for Bad Habit next Spring.
MURPHY'S LAW: Yrs Truly,
the racing Beagle is into college football, mainly
because UGA, the University of Georgia official mascot, is a close cousin.
UGA is a bulldog, so he is not the most nimble of racing crew..., but he is
a great grinder on a big boat!
/S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us
all.
