SBRNYCU   MURPHY RULES - 2009:   January 24, 2009, Saturday,  0900 - 1545, at Norfolk Yacht and Country Club.   All you never thought you could know about the rules!  The focus of the clinic will be an interactive discussion of the racing rules with special emphasis on the rules changes that become effective in six (6) weeks.  Course instructor John McCarthy will explain all the important changes and work them into the "rules made easy format" he has used in the past, stressing understanding concepts rather than memorizing rules.   The fee, if received prior to January 1,  is $40 ( $35 for attendee's family member); after January 1st, it will be $45 per person.  Registration fee includes morning refreshments, lunch, and course materials.  PRE-register by calling (757) 850-4225 or by email to mcbear@earthlink.net (include your name, address, and phone number and on the subject line put  MURPHY RULES).   This is an ideal opportunity for both skippers and people who crew.

FROSTBITE SERIES (Day 4) - Yesterday, the wind was light, too light.  Race officials packed it up and sent the fleet in after an hour of waiting for  "no show" breezes.    The Final Frostbite Series Race is this coming Sunday, November 30.  The first warning signal is at noon, 1200.  For info and to enter contact Brian Deibler at (757) 224-4272 or (757) 715-8977.    Hampton Yacht Club sponsors this Series, which is OPEN TO ALL.  Racing is in the Hampton Roads harbor area.

Food for thought - Not every kid who plays T-Ball will reach the major leagues or receive an athletic scholarship to college, and neither will most kids who throw a football, dribble a basketball, swing a field hockey stick, kick a soccer ball,  etc.  But, they will learn valuable lessons for life.  Competitive sailing, that is racing, offers those same lessons along with a few others unique to the sport.  You have only to watch an eight year-old, shove his or her Opti off from shore, alone with the tiller in hand, heading for the course of his or her first regatta, to understand the euphoria, and trepidation, of independence each must feel.   Do everything you can to introduced kids to programs that teach them to race, to succeed among their peers, to learn from experienced, knowledgeable,  adult coaches the right way to "play the game".  Then, step to the background and watch them grow!   Not everyone will become a member of the US SAILING team (see below), but aiming for a star is not a waste of time!

YOUTH MOVEMENT IN US SAILING:  The following info is reprinted from an official notice from US SAILING:

US SAILING Announces New Olympic Training Pipeline

Applications for New 2009 US Sailing Team – U18, US Sailing Team – U23 Now Being Accepted
Portsmouth, R.I. (November 18, 2008) – US SAILING’s Olympic Sailing Committee (OSC) is proud to announce a new Olympic sailing training pipeline, which will help guide talented sailors from youth programs to the U.S. Olympic Sailing Program. As part of the new pipeline, the OSC will launch two new teams in 2009: The US Sailing Team – U18 (Under 18) and US Sailing Team – U23 (Under 23). As a long-time supporter of youth racing, LaserPerformance has signed on as the official sponsor of both teams. US SAILING will provide the teams with elite-level coaching, as well as educational, administrative and logistical support throughout the year. The country’s top youth sailors will gain invaluable experience by competing at major national and international regattas, learn how to campaign for the U.S. Olympic Sailing Team AlphaGraphics and choose, prepare and maintain equipment.

Formerly known as the Elite Youth Development Team, the US Sailing Team – U18 and US Sailing Team – U23 were created for athletes who have been identified as future Olympic prospects. The US Sailing Team – U18 will include the top sailors in the Laser Radial (boys), Laser Radial (girls), 29er (open) and I420 (boys or girls) classes, who were born after 1991. The OSC will accept up to five boats in each class for the U18 team. The US Sailing Team – U23 will consist of the top two sailors born after 1986 in each of the Laser (men) and Laser Radial (women) classes. Members of the U23 team may also compete concurrently at the college level.

Sailors interested in being considered for the team should e-mail a cover letter, sailing resume, training and regatta plan and headshot to US SAILING’s High Performance Director Kenneth Andreasen and US SAILING’s Olympic Director Katie Kelly at Olympics@ussailing.org. The deadline for applications is Sunday, December 7, 2008. Team members will be announced by Friday, December 19, 2008. This entire press release can be found online at: http://olympics.ussailing.org/Current__News/2009_Youth_Pipeline.htm?PageMode=Edit

MURPHY'S LAW:   Speaking of holiday gifts for  for racers - have you seen those thingies that look like gloves for the feet? Individual sections for each toe!  Laying un-used on the dock they look like The Abominable Snowman's  footprint.  If your bowman doesn't want a pair of those, you need to revoke his or her Pointy End Certification!   Absolutely a "must have"!    /S/  Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
