The 31st GABOON RACE proved to be bone
chillin' and certainly thrillin' in winds that stayed NW
between 19 and 25 knots with the highest confirmed gust at 33 knots. "How
cold was it?" you say. It was soooooooooo cold that one
racer was moved to declare,"Good grief, it MUST be cold, Bumps Eberwine is
wearing socks!" The air temperatures hovered in the low thirties.
Twenty-one (21) boats left the starting area (Hampton River) in the staggered
start race and completed a pre-set 9 nm course, most in record times and many
under reduced sail. Reefing the main was not to be sneered
at yesterday. Only three boats even attempted to hoist
spinnakers and then only briefly. Other than damage to one boat's rudder,
everyone made out fine and returned with all the crew that went, although most
looked like smiling popsicles when they got back. Here are the
award winners in each fleet: PHRF A: 1.Bob
Mosby, Cyrano; 2.Phil Briggs,
Feather; 3. Jim Williams/Will Roberts, Treaty of
Ghent. PHRF B: 1.Rusty Burshell, Cool
Change; 2.Chris Hall, Quicksilver,
Jr; 3.Chuck Monsees, Rockette.
PHRF C: 1.Justin Morris, The
Hunter; 2.Bob Houseman,
Bobinski. Event chairman - Phil Briggs (for
31 consecutive years!); Principal Race Officer - John

There's more going on in Austin, Texas, than UT football -
apparently they race sailboats too! Yesterday a sailboat racer from
Austin, Markus Langhans, upon seeing sailboat masts on
the Hampton city skyline, found his way aboard one of the Gaboon race boats -
Larry Preddy's PF Flyer, and went racing. The
club race community, within one-half hour of his arrival, fixed him up with foul
weather gear, a boat, a skipper, crew mates, and post-race nourishment.
Now that's hospitality - southern Bay style!
Southern Bay expatriate, Sanford Richardson and wife
Alex were spotted this past weekend. They send word that they are
doing fine and invite all their southern Bay friends to stop by for a visit
whenever in the Annapolis area. Sanford still owns and skippers the "big
red boat", Kahuna, and he and Alex expect to hit the race course hard
this coming summer. No surprise there!
Media Watch: Check out the photo
(pages 40-41) spread in the December issue of SpinSheet Magazine
to see a close-up of Jake Brodersen's big
toe. Jake's wife Pat and crew of Midnight Mistress are
in the photo too. It was taken at Screwpile 2008. And, southern Bay
racer exemplar, Sledd Shelhorse, owner and skipper of
Meridian 2, is featured in the same SpinSheet
issue in the Annapolis Performance Sailing Chesapeake Race profile on page
75.

MURPHY'S LAW: None of
us is immune from the financial concerns of the day. Yrs Truly, the
Racing Beagle, has experienced financial woes
too! The Murphster's Beagle Beer
stock has tanked. A Beagle Bail-Out is what is needed.
Plans are to re-invest the Beagle Bail-Out bucks in rum flavored dog
biscuits with hopes for beer flavored dog bone spin-off.
Now..., if only Congress will
agree. /S/ Murphy the Racing
Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
