# 435 SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE
Monday March 16, 2009 09:25PM
onCongratulations to MITCH BRINDLEY - US SAILING Sailor
of the Week. Mitch, head sailing coach at national power Old
Dominion University, is in his 14th year at the Norfolk school. His
accomplishments fill more than a page (see www.ussailing.org) on the
US SAILING website and he is known world wide for those accomplishments.
Those of us on the southern Chesapeake also know Mitch as one who is always
willing to give a helping hand to the sailing community. We are so
fortunate to have him here with us.
It's a "rum bunch" that supports our
racing! Make that Mount Gay Rum
- they are a key sponsor for the 14th year at SCREWPILE
LIGHTHOUSE CHALLENGE - and Gosling's Rum - key
sponsors of SOUTHERN BAY RACE WEEK and for whom the Black Seal
Cup is named. The Black Seal Cup is awarded to the top boat at
SBRW. Every time you drink their rum anywhere, you are
supporting sponsors of sailboat racing! Now, those
post-race party drinks should taste twice as good.
CNU takes 3rd in 2009 Icefree Invitational.
Eight collegiate teams showed up at the Icefree Invite hosted by
Christopher Newport University this past weekend. CNU finished third
behind winner Delaware and second place Virginia. Other finishes
were: William and Mary, 4th; Hampton U, 5th; Maryland, 6th; Salisbury,
7th; and, Webb, 8th.
DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT challenging a
Rappahannock River racer at a mark rounding. Saturday, thirty-six
(36) Rapp River racers gathered at RRYC to explore and conquer the mysteries of
the mark rounding rules. John McCarthy led the three
hour seminar that addressed mark roundings and other rules
issues. Ron Mihills of RRYC pulled together the
seminar and coupled it with an opportunity for skippers and "wannabe" crew to
mix and meet.
Don't push the envelope - mail it! By
now most racers have gotten their application for their 2009 Valid PHRF
Rating Certificate off to PHRF. As diligent as PHRF
is, they have a lot of paper to process and they cannot do it all in the
short time left between now and the beginning of the race
season. More than one thousand racers race on PHRF of the
Chesapeake certificates each year. Get your paperwork in today.
Don't create a "crisis" - MAIL THAT ENVELOPE TO PHRF NOW!
Time is flying.
SOUTHERN BAY RACE
WEEK for the BLACK SEAL CUP: David Eberwine and the SEA
STAR team have joined the Early Bird entries for SBRW 2009.
SEA STAR, a J/36, returns to SBRW as the defending champion of
the 2008 PHRF A2 fleet.
RACERS AND THE RULES QUIZ: TRUE or
FALSE - Unless the Sailing Instruction says otherwise, a boat can always
throw-out its worse score of a series. (Answer follows in
this issue of SBRNYCU.)
DOWN THE BAY RACE for the VIRGINIA CRUISING
CUP: Three more have decided to race non-stop from
Annapolis to Hampton in hopes of winning the Virginia Cruising Cup.
Paul Kaplan (Annapolis Yacht Club) will bring his Baltic 42,
INCESSANT, to the starting line on Friday, May 22, and
so will Mike Nestor (Hampton Yacht Club) bring his Tayana
55, TELL TALES and Jim
Forrester (Norfolk Yacht & Country Club) his Catalina 38,
ANJALEI . Mike, Paul, and Jim plan to use the
entire Chesapeake Bay as they race in the 60th running of the
DTB.
Answer to RR Quiz Question: TRUE (AND FALSE) !
Huh? As noted in the SBRNYCU quiz last week,
unless the S.I. says otherwise, each boat's series score shall be the total of
her race scores excluding her worst score. So, race
committee, if you don't want to allow any "throw-outs" or if you don't
want to have more than one, you must say so in the Sailing Instructions.
HOWEVER, even if one or more throw-outs are allowed, you cannot
always throw-out your worst score. Some scores are not
excludable. These include being DSQ'd for breaking Rule 2 (Fair Sailing),
Rule 30.3 (Black Flag), Rule 42 (Propulsion), or Rule 69 (Gross
Misconduct). If you break one of these rules, you are stuck with it.
(Be aware that there are additional "what ifs" in the referenced rules, but
space does not allow coverage of all the details of this topic. Check the
appropriate rules for details.)
